Smashley Young

We laughed that Liverpool got Downing for 20m. Well, at-least they got rid of him.

Frankly speaking, don't think that there is a difference between them. Both are outside of top 6 level. One of worst SAF signings IMO. Would prefer that those minutes will got to Zaha/Januzaj.

Sadly a very good summation on where we are. I was surprised when SAF signed him and have never understood the logic.

Look forward to finding out what SAF saw in him when he publishes the autobiography he is writing right now!

Can't see the Young Feint being remembered as fondly as the Cruyff Turn...

The difference is Young is capable of playing better at a lower level, compared to Downing, as shown by their performances prior to their big moves (Utd and Liverpool respectively).

Are you implying that Young has been a success at United? Im not even factoring in his fee or the wages he is on. Please expand?

Brendon got rid of Downing, they lost£14m. Knowing us we would probably offer him a contract extension.Utter waste of £18m. Because of his wages he will be hard to shift.

I forget but didnt we get Young when his contract was running down? Must have been a bargain... good value!

Not!

He's been injured fairly regularly and when he's played he's done well in general. The odd poor game here and there and enough competency to be given a run of games. Comparing him to Downing is being a bit dramatic. Give the fecking guy a chance to get back to at least some form and have another go this season. If he does well then he does well. If he doesn't then we can start to question the ability of the player.

It matters naught what wages he is on. It's not any of our (us, the fans) money and quite frankly makes no difference to his on field performance. He's being paid whatever the club think they can afford and it's no different to any other player in the world.

frustrating to watch today. He was doing well to get into positions and receive the ball, but then he would just dribble straight into the opposition and lose the ball

:nervous:

 that's shocking

That is a hideous dashboard. Full of totally negative backpasses.
The difference when Nani came on compared to Giggs and Young was night and day! We actually had a winger who was prepared to take people on! We looked much more of a threat!

 his and Valencia's pass map ( whatever it's called) just crack me up

He epitomizes everything that is wrong with our wing play for the past season. Unable to take players on at all, doesn't get into goalscoring positions and passes backwards all the time. He has a good cross on him though I will give him that, but the rest of his game is so shit I can't even begin to explain. I want him sold. Can't we ring Aston Villa and ask them to take him back at half the price?

The way it's going surely Zaha and Adnan have a good chance of moving ahead of him the pecking order.

The worst part of it is that Nani wasn't even all that good. Yet without being all that good he was still miles better offensively than Young and Giggs. He misplaced a fair few passes and was notably rusty but even so he was way more of a threat than all of our other attacking players combined. He should get a good run in the team imo. Get his confidence back up. He's the only winger we have who knows that his role in the team is to create. He takes responsibility to try to make something happen and it didn't always come off but I'd rather have Nani start than watch that negativity from Young. That dashboard is shocking though.

At this moment in time Young should not start for us, our two wingers should be Valencia/Nani with Adnan and Zaha as back up.

If we get Ozil, obviously UNLIKELY, then Young will become surplus to requirement.

He was never really good for us. He only got off lightly in the beginning since we were playing really well and he scored two goals against arsenal. Apart from that he hasn't done much to warrant his place in the squad. Complete waste of money and space in the squad. And the only way to get rid of him is if we pay someone to take him at his wages. In my opinion, Young was the worst, inflated, doomed-to-fail and most needless transfer we have made since 1995.

I am exaggerating here, I know but I feel quite irritated by his general uselessness and my initial thoughts on him being that he would be a waste of money. I was hoping that we would use the money that summer towards a midfielder and thought buying him would eat into the budget. Was hoping to be wrong, but unfortunately we simply didn't seem to want to buy midfielders.

I used to defend Young quite a bit, but he just doesn't look good enough to play for us at all.

He should have been sold this summer. We would have got some money, got rid of a substantial chunk on the wage bill - all that could have gone towards a big enough offer for a quality midfielder. We have more than enough players who are no worse than him on the left.

To sell we would need to buy someone, and at this rate that is not gonna happen.

He's shown glimpses of quality but he really hasn't shown that he can perform consistently enough to warrant a place in the team. That being said, he'd probably do a lot better at a mid-table club.....

Young is a good player who has come off an injury and is completely devoid of confidence because he doesn't play regularly. Some might say for good reason.

He was terrific at Villa for a long time but his next step up in hindsight shouldn't have been United.

Didn't O'Neill once call him "world class"...he must've been drunk as he is deffo not world class.

I still think he needs to play on the right. I'm not knocking him but his service is just so suited to a right footer playing on the right. It needs to happen imo.

Anyone else think Young has looked far more dangerous in his brief cameo's on the right, then he ever has on the left? When he's on the left all he seems to do is cut in and either pass back to Evra, or across to Carrick. He doesn't ever look particularly threatening, bar the odd shot. But when he's on the right he always seems more comfortable, and looks for the cross.

He was diabolical against Liverpool, one of the worst performances I've seen. I hope the England games will help him, but he's definitely not good enough to play for United, he made Johnson look like the best full back in world football during 90 minutes. I don't know if it's his confidence, or just his natural ability. He's been underwhelming for the best part of 18 months now.

Match day thread vultures have been hard on young today.

For me one of our better players in the half and has been involved a lot.

The sniping has reached idiotic levels.

He hasn't been bad today but needs to cut out the diving promptly.

Looking back on that "dive" I can see why the yellow was given. Still happy enough with him going down there.

Other than that involved in good moves and got an assist that helped break them down. Done his job.

Lacks a bit of sharpness but I think he will get better with more games.
