Smashley Young

He started ok but he's just not able to take on responsibility. The main problem is that at the moment too many of our players are too "safe" and unfortunately they're the only ones who seem to be fit. Young in a team when most the other players have a cutting edge is a decent player to have, which for me reflects that he should be just a squad player. As I said though unfortunately we have a lot of players injured/ lacking sharpness.

I think those of us that think Young is an utterly mediocre player (at least I do) are more often than not shot down, just because he is a United player. Total, total shit player...the most amusing thing is that those that are far superior to him (Valencia, Nani, Zaha) did not start the game today.

Totally agree, the only thing worse than Young was Moyes decision which goes to the heart of his negative attitude.

Awful player at an awesome club.

We laughed that Liverpool got Downing for 20m. Well, at-least they got rid of him.

Frankly speaking, don't think that there is a difference between them. Both are outside of top 6 level. One of worst SAF signings IMO. Would prefer that those minutes will got to Zaha/Januzaj.

He's a good player but this is above his level, i'd rather give zaha a chance at least there's room for development.

He's an expensive and less hardworking version of Quinton Fortune.

I'm terrified we're going to do something stupid like balls up the Januzaj situation by repeatedly playing Young ahead of him. The Pogba episode would have nothing on that.

Decent player. Was never anything more. I'd actually rather see young gifted footballers like adnan play instead of experienced pros like him who don't offer that much.

He kills momentum when he cuts into his right, but to give him credit - the balls he put into the box today were excellent IMO.

Feel the same way, which is why I wouldn't mind him having a real run on the right at some point rather than persist with these shite showings on the left.

Think it was Norwich away last season when Young played on the right and it was of his few good games, he was so much more direct and just got towards the by line and hit in a good cross, obviously last week against Chelsea we saw glimpses of the same thing with those two crosses.

On the left its exactly as you say, kills the momentum and cuts inside before generally playing a safe pass to Carrick or back to Evra

Good point, though Young's productivity isn't too bad. He had his best game two years ago against Arsenal, and since then, he's been disappointing, and sometimes just about ok. I agree that he's basically above his level here, but would do well for about 14 clubs in the PL. Just not here.

We spent 17 million this fella. I don't think he's as bad as some people here think. But 17 million is pure madness.

I have chastised him plenty on here, but I don't think he was that bad today. Giggs should have certainly gone off before him. I also think that he generally has quite a bit more footballing ability than Antonio Valencia.

Since when did United a team reknowned with world-class wingplay have to settle for the shit on a stick that is Young and Valencia. Situation needs sorting in a lot of our attacking areas tbh.. thing is we have some decent solutions within the squad but Moyes needs to have faith in the more creative and technically gifted players within the squad.

Next time he decides to sit with the Utd fans away from home can someone tell him this is where he belongs and not on the pitch....

They're not shit on a stick. One of them used to be quite good but if were going to be a team that's all about wingplay, then the standard of wide players needs to be better. They're both one dimensional players and ATM nothing more than decent. Hope Valencia rediscovers his form but he was never a top player either IMO.

Agreed they're not worthy of that compliment. They're not good for a side that is all about wingplay? then they're even more useless for a side which is about ball retention and wide players who come inside and score goals.. either way pointless footballers for a side which is aiming to beat the Barca's/Bayerns of this world.

It's not his transfer fee that's an issue. It's his wages.

I wish we could get rid of him but I suspect he is the one player who will stick around till his contract ends as he no other club in the world would pay close to half what he is earning here.

About the same time we had to settle for shit on a stick fans.

:nervous:

Didn't think he was all that bad. Felt he should've switched flanks with Giggs at some point to give us some proper width. Jones isn't good enough going forward to be creating along the wing by himself, and after the promising cameo against Chelsea I felt like he could've done a job on the right. On the left he looks short of ideas and confidence to beat a man...

We should have quietly sold him this summer like Liverpool selling Downing to West Ham. Suck up the loss and move on. Wages are large but a Sunderland or Stoke may have paid it.

Probably, we would have to subsidise his wages still I'd imagine

everyone forgetting a great first season

Great is a big word. And Young certainly wasn't great. Though he was good in the first half of the season. And then looked like a League One midtable player in the next 20 months.

well an impressive first season at least. 9 goals and about 15 assists. i remeber him finishing the season strongly when he played. he was no worse last season than all of our wingers.

He gets a lot of stick on here. He IS good enough to play for us. Perhaps shouldn't be in a first choice 11 if we face Europe's finest but as a squad player against premier league teams he's fine.

Very deceptive stats. Our football dies around him when he's not on form, and a single assist in a game cannot compensate for what we lose in that respect.

He has more ability true, but that doesn't always count for everything. Generally I'm a bigger fan of Young than Valencia, but yesterday Valencia was easily one of best players. His pace and power meant he was such a reliable outlet out wide. He dominated Sterling and was great offensively.

Whereas Young...

He needs to return to the right and we need to balance it with a left footed winger. Assaulting down the right and playing the ball early swinging across the box is great. From the left cutting back and playing a low percentage cross swinging toward the back post is nearly the hardest ball to get on target from that area and that is nearly the only thing he ever plays from those positions.

For Villa and for us he has always predominantly played on the left. He just lacks the bollocks to take on his man. And he needs to mix up his play - I mean, even a blind man can probably tell what his next move is when he is taking on his man.

And by all accounts it seems pace isn't an issue, so at the very least he should attempt to take his man on. I think he would receive a lot less flak if he actually tried to do something different.

When he did well for Villa he was the main outlet and he was so much better on the ball. I'd also ask how much that injury has effected him as well.

True about pace and the skill as well. But nearly every time on the left he cuts back and hits a ball across the face. Frustrating for a striker when that is the only service from the left. Regularly getting in behind and cutting back is priceless.

I can only assume its his familiarity of cutting back on to the right, and the fact he isn't particularly confident with getting down the line and putting hte ball in with his left. I thought on the few occasions I've seen before his left foot is not too bad. Not as good as Nani's but still capable of a decent cross from time to time.
