Smashley Young

He's one of the most pointless players United have ever had. Being on the pitch is about the most notable thing he does 95% of the time, the other 5% is cutting inside and curling it in on his right.

I really hope he's not playing just because he's English, but I think that has something to do with it.

As I said when we signed him: he's an upgrade on Ji-Sung Park on the left wing, as a squad player. That's it.

And he does that job well.

He was fine today, and protected Buttner well.

Park was never non-existent. When he came into the team he made an impact and that's what you're looking for from a squad player. Young's done practically nothing in about half his games this year, today was one of his better ones really.

He's fecking woeful.

Can't stand his shameless diving and general whiny attitude either, wouldn't mind if we got rid.

Gets the ball with his back to goal, runs a bit and passes it back to Vidic/Evans/Carrick/Rio and when he does go forward, he crosses it straight to no one or passes it straight out of play. The only point of Young in the team is the cover he gives to our left backs and the unreal amount of free kicks he wins.

He fills me with apathy every time I see his name on the team sheet, he works hard, falls over a lot and is pretty one dimensional from a creative standpoint, even at nearly 40 Giggs looks better on the left this season.

Not a fan hate how when 1 on 1 he rarely takes his man on but is a threat cutting in and a good squad player if being honest.

He was certainly not terrible. His passing was quite incisive at times. Definitely someone the supporters should lay off.

Why would we pick him because he's English? There isn't half a lot of whiny bitches on here.

So incisive he had Buttner, Kagawa and van Persie all standing with their hands on their hips after yet another pass out for a goal kick.

Young didn't do a lot bad today, but didn't do anything really of note either. A performance level I've come to associate with him, just about passable.

Wow. Harsh.

What did you make of Valencia's performance... Or Van Persie's even?

 ours i hope. any links?

yeah, one of them took his part down. Since they're really young lads (and have taken it down) I won't mention their names but what was said was quite funny.

One said all he does is jog forward with the ball, stop, turn and shank his cross. The other said he's like a FIFA player is controlling him in how slow he turns, then the first tweeter replied that he's deadwood.

According to one of the stat accounts on twitter Young created most chances in the PL today with 8.

:D:D:D

listen, anyone who played on any sort of competitive team at any level knows internally that some team-mates will take the piss out of you regarding your performances and ability throughout the season.

I'm sure ashley young gets it internally from our lads....and he's so shite that getting it from academy lads isn't surprising as they can see how shite he is as well.

Atleast the academy kids live up to his name more than he does. going to be 28 this july and is an absolute waste. atleast ando is funny and berba was cool and moody.

I'm sure this has been said already, but what was he doing in the last minute of the match? He had so much time to lay it off to v.Persie for an open goal and did it at the worst possible moment, with one of the worst possible passes.

That genuinely happened with every one of them. It happened with Buttner within the first ten minutes and he just stood there gobsmacked, then around ten minutes into the first half van Persie made one of his selfish overlapping runs and gave Young an earful when he screwed up the pass. Quite a few times he and van Persie seemed on completely different wavelengths really.

He put in some good corners and hit a sweet left-footed cross which van Persie was waiting to bury, but other than that I thought he was very ordinary up until that last-minute chance. He did very well to win that ball and race into position but for me was far too tentative when he got there. Much more lively than his recent games but not incisive at all. He can be a very creative passer when he wants to be but I didn't notice that today at all.

I thought van Persie was good myself. feck that ridiculous van Basten attempt though, every game he goes for the ridiculous goals...

I forgot Valencia was playing until there was ten minutes left, and that was only when O'Shea nutmegged him. We need a gif of that by the way. O'Shea scooping the ball over Anderson, nutmegging Valencia and then fizzing in a cross...I swear he's not done that since we last played Madrid a decade ago.

Absolute truth.

Young wasn't woeful today, but he was presented with a great opportunity to shine and he didn't take it. He's still a good squad man, but as of yet he's nothing more than that.

I thought the defender did really well actually, and that Young still gave RVP a chance he certainly should have taken.

I think he'd do much better if played on the right or even more centrally. Wide left is his worst position, particularly when he's low on confidence/form.

I don't like Young, he is always near zero contribution despite getting paid regularly. I hope next season we will see more of Zaha instead of Young.

I don't mind Ashley, but feel his hesitancy & indecisiveness might transfer to other players (re: the RVP chance).

Some players just don't cope well with being squad players. Young's one of them.

I think few would argue that he preformed better at Villa than he has done here - his set pieces in particular have been notably poorer. The fact he started off well goes to show that he's not that bad once he's in his groove and confident, but ever since that first injury his place has been in doubt and his performance levels have dropped.

I don't think he's good enough to warrant a starting berth and he's shown himself not to have the mentality to cope with being rotated. Unless something changes I can't see what qualities he brings to the squad other than being another body on the bench.

Shit post. Offer some insight if you think he's not good enough for us.

Well last year he scored and assisted goals all season. He is a backup and a very good one and I don't think there are any backup wingers as good as him.

Young's lynching is getting out of order. I don't get it, he was bought to be a squad player. He is very good when on form and when off it, he still puts in a shift.

I'm willing to bet that over an injury-free season, where both play the exact amount of games, Young will have better stats than Adam Johnson year in year out. The same Johnson who apparently is a 'terrific little player who got dumped by Shitty'. You won't have a better sub-winger in the PL.

That's why Sir Alex racked him up, do some of you think someone of Nani's self-regard and ability would be willing to sit on the bench?

Also showed superb pace to make that chance. He was nowhere near as poor as Valencia, and hasn't been all season. Not sure why people seem to be turning on him.

Such a wierd post. For one Adam Johnson is fecking shite, so no idea why you're implying Young having better stats is some sort of achievement.

Regardless, it's a terrible way of comparing the two as the gulf in their respective teams couldn't be greater. Evidently Young will get more assists and goals, we score twice as many as Sunderland.

Going off this season it isn't even true. Johnson scores or assists one in three, Young one in six.

Stats like that are a terrible way of assessing a player anyway, he's clearly better than Johnson. Not that it means much.

He was a squad player for City, playing the same position as Young, hence the comparison. And I've heard people wanting him when he was still there.

Young's had injury niggled season this time round and it seems he can't get into rhythm before another injury occurs.

I don't think that anybody has been as poor as Valencia this season, so that's not really saying much, is it?

This place would be pretty dull of we just went around saying 'well, he wasn't as poor as Valencia' after every game and just accepted average performances all around. Things don't work that way at a club like Manchester United though, there's a standard that the fans have come to expect.

Especially from our wingers, who have always been of the highest standard and a big part of our success as a club under SAF.

This. His short passing was pretty good and when he kept it simple he generally retained possession but any time he attempted something even slightly adventurous it just ended up in him giving the ball away. It was a pretty typical Young performance.

The point is - the fans have not turned on Valencia in the same way.

He's been a little disappointing this season. No more so than Jonny Evans a couple of years ago, say.

He's a very useful part of the squad - sure, hope his form improves but he's had a few injuries. He has some class in his game.
