Smashley Young

The point is - the fans have not turned on Valencia in the same way.

He's been a little disappointing this season. No more so than Jonny Evans a couple of years ago, say.

He's a very useful part of the squad - sure, hope his form improves but he's had a few injuries. He has some class in his game.

You might want to read through his thread and see that you couldn't be more wrong. It's only toned down a bit now on Valencia's part because people are getting tired of posting how shit he was again. It's become a general agreement at this stage.

Young doesn't offer more end product than Valencia this season, and his poor form coupled with his constant diving, the fans are getting on his back. Imo, that is natural and I honestly think it's a good thing. He falls over like a little girl, and that is something that I don't think United should stand for. If he was ridiculously good, one would expect that the supporters would stand behind him, but he isn't ridiculously good, so it only frustrates more.

He showed at the end today that he has great pace - why not use it and go past people? It's so annoying when pacey wingers don't just realise their pace and use it. When Nani were on top form he just ran past players time and time again - much more effective than stopping up and dribbling. If you are faster, they can't do much about it. Just ask every defender who faced Valencia last season. Blackburn doubled up with the Olsson twins, who are both pacey, yet they could do nothing to stop him. If Young just realises that he can actually go past players and dares to cross with his left foot, he will be more unpredictable and more dangerous. I still think he has great qualities, but he frustrates the feck out of me with his diving and inconsistent play.

Young seems to be trying bit hard to impress. Strange considering his age but watching him yesterday, he looked like a player still finding his feet here. This is also strange because he's been in the PL for years and usually such 'excuses' for not adjusting are afforded to foreign players.

The passes he tries continually frustrate me and when he makes a risky decision, there's absolutely no conviction behind it. On that breakaway at the end, the speed on Young's pass allows the defender to catch up to van Persie and slightly put him off. It just further highlights how shite our wingers have been.

Have to say that the wingers this season have been shite collectively and for a team that loves to play with them its amazing we are where we are. Zaha might be a real boost next season, since from what I've seen of him, the penetration and pace is exciting. But having said that, Valencia and Young had that with the teams they played for, so goodness knows what will happen.

I found something good that he did. Nice control & pass there, well done!

Gave us a threat when he came on and gave Evra an outlet and opportunity to get forward. Should've been on sooner.

He was actually half-decent but we all know he's not good enough. Winger is desperately needed in the summer. Someone like Ben Arfa or in muppet-land Bale.

He was good. Looked like he was taking more initiative to create something. If he plays like that then he's certainly good enough to be at United and make a valuable contribution.

This is what I want from Young more often, picking up the ball and turning to face the opponents goal, and whilst utilising the fb in the way he did for RVPs chance, also being willing to put in a cross and run at people.

Oh feck off man. The fella puts in a very good 10 minute performance and you must still criticise him? Why?

First very decent performance for us in months. In 10 minutes today I fancy Young showed more of note than he did at Sunderland last weekend. Hopefully he can get back to being the Ashley Young who cuts in and curls blinders past Brad Friedel again. We surely need one of our wide players to hit some kind of form.

Very true - we had very little coming down the left and with Evra's main strength his forward play, that was completely negated without a proper winger there.

Cleverley picking up a yellow and forcing giggs central didn't help either (along with us chasing the game)

I've never been a hater but today when he was coming on, i was like "why him ?".

Did decently enough in the cameo today but you just know he isn't that likely to make the telling difference.

He looked surprisingly zippy and willing in the 10 minutes he had today. Leave him out and bring him off the bench a few more times, looked more inspired than I've seen since Blackburn away last season.

Good little cameo today. In hindsight, he likely would have been better of starting in place of Cleverley who looked a bit lost out wide today.

Knoblance.

Good little cameo for him. Still looks unnatural on the left as a pure dribbler for me. Would love to see him get more time on the right.

Looked very good against Chelsea I thought. Only tuned in to the game with 5 mins to go and I thought 'he is looking surprisingly energetic and he played a full game just 48 hours prior'.

He has the technical ability and pace to be great for us but I think mentally he isn't at Utd level yet.

That is a key point. Many players have the ability to play for a club at United but lack the mental toughness that is needed to succeed here. Perhaps that's the issue with Young.

He's not crap, far from it. He just seems, to me anyway, to suffer from a lack of belief that he deserves to be here.

Not that he isn't playing well, but he always looks to me like he is looking out for someone to foul him, like he is scared of getting injured and therefore is so much slower/ more hesitant because of it.

It was evident when Kompany just threw himself at Young and got a yellow, if that was against someone else who didn't see it coming before Kompany did, could well have been off IMO..

Just wish Ashley would have a bit more confidence, the way he turned Zabaleta shows you the talent is there...

If he was a more likeable human being I can't help but think I'd tolerate him as a footballer more, but I can't stand him. Possibly my least favourite United player ever.

I thought he was pretty good going forward today, certainly not bad. However Evra was screaming at him a couple of times when he felt like Young wasnt tracking Zabaleta enough and Evra had to face a 2 vs 1 alone. This isnt to say that any of our other left sided options (Nani, Kagawa) would have helped out any more than Young did. But Zabaleta and Milner caused a lot of problems out there and our balance wasnt right to work against it

I just don't think he's up to it here. He has talent but just think he lacks the mentality and ability to deal with the pressure of a club likes ours with Fergie breathing down your neck. It also agitates me when players come across intimidated like he did when Zabaleta had a go at him tonight.

He did fine today, one of our better players. Although that isn't saying much.

The problem however is, he's very rarely great - due to generally just being quite average.

He's just ordinary. Doesn't get involved much and make the difference.. Ok'ish today but that's his level.

He had a few decent moments but overall he just doesn't do enough. He's a thoroughly decent player but Fergie continually leaves me perplexed by continually selecting him.

I read the Zabaleta incident completely differently. I think Young was attempting to wind him up having been frustrated that Milner and Zabaleta were doing a good job to stifle our attacks down the left. And he was successful in doing so. A bit sly and I'm sure its the reason Zabaleta took him out at the end. The commentary made the comment that its strange how players who are usually so disciplined end up lunging in and giving away a dangerous freekick at the end of a match. I think Young's ploy was the reason for that. And who knows, had Young received the ball in the box Zabaleta may have had a rush of blood to the head there as well. It wasnt to be.

Having said all that, I'd much rather a United winger just concentrates on skipping past a fullback and putting top quality delivery into the box and trying to win points that way. If you're genuinely good enough to be a starter for United longterm you probably dont need to employ questionable tactics to upset opposing players, you probably have the quality to shine through instead

Pretty good ? Really ?

What did he do that was pretty good ?
