Smashley Young

Was pretty good today in fairness, I think ideally you play one off Welbeck or Young out wide. Both will work hard, are tidy on the ball and can contribute attackingly without being a creative hub, but by playing both I think we lose a lot in attack as neither really go down the line and neither are great at cutting in.

How was he good? Our standards of what constitutes as a good performance from a winger have clearly dropped.
He never fecking takes on a man, his off the ball work is atrocious, there was about 3/4 times today where he had the chance to get behind a city defender but instead of doing that and going towards goal, he'd drop back alongside the player on the ball or move two steps wide.
He's an absolute coward of a player, hides away. And there's this myth that he defends well. He was garbage going back today, allowing Milner to have a free ride on the wing, James fecking Milner.
And his crosses? is it too much to ask to have him find one of our players in the box. How about looking up before you cross the ball? You're not playing for Villa, mediocrity is not acceptable.
He strolls around the pitch with his stupid long arms, cowarding away a United career. Zero goals this season? seriously? ZERO freaking goals. He's a winger for Manchester United and he hasn't scored a goal this season and he's had more game time than anyone else.
I'll take Giggs silly flicks and Rooneys overly ambitious chips over this coward anyday, doesn't try anything.

The fact some think it was a good performance just shows us how poor our wingers have been this season.

People are criticizing him for not taking a man on, but don't forget, he's playing on a wing against 2 city defenders with Evra who doesn't really overlap, but instead passes and moves. How can he take on 2 defenders? He'd just lose the ball, his crosses are great sometimes but today some of them were off.

He's not going to take on defender after defender to the byline, that's not his playing style.

Basically as Leroy sums up, he's not the archetypal Manchester United winger. Our standards of what a good winger is have really fallen IMO. It wasn't poor performance but it wasn't anything noteworthy either.

Like I said he can do a job, Milner wasn't really better but being able to play off nasri and silva who can be the creative hubs lets him contribute and put in a shift without having to be a big creative player. Park did a big job for us in the tough games for a number of years doing a similar role, problem is right now we're lacking the creative hubs that's exposing the likes of Young.

I like Young, he makes me feel like I may have psychic powers as I guess what he is going to do every time he gets the ball wide.

Still needs to play on the right. He can't just cut back onto his right ever time and fire in-swinging crosses across the face of goal. They are low percentage balls that none of our front four have the genuine ability to win. Even RvP.

If we had an out and out left footed left winger it would bring a lot more balance to the wide areas and make the ability to play in the channels and from deeper much more effective. The times we get twatted are the times we rely on Evra to be that left footed outlet on the left, but he's a fullback.

If he could develop a delivery while players are moving toward goal then I don't see why he can't stay on the left. But the whole cut back and deliver across the face is rather pointless. I'd have thought someone at United would have seen that by now and been in Fergie's ear to play him on the right where his natural foot would force him to be able to dribble on his strong foot and deliver early.

Just sell him, please. When I see him(and Valencia these days) on the teamsheet I feel sleepy. The two of them are so boring to watch these days, and offer nothing. Can't we just see Kagawa/Nani/Welbeck on the wings and be gone of Young? At least Zaha seems to have a bit of flair about him.

jeez, some of you really are fecking prejudiced, it's not even funny anymore. Pathetic.

Out of all our stars and fancy names in the attacking third, he was the only one trying something. I'd say he is one of very few and I mean 2/3 at best who doesn't deserve total bollocking.

Agree with tomus. He was ok tonight.

Even last week when he came on against Chelsea for 5 mins, he created 2 good chances and people were saying he never even touched the ball.

And yet Tomus, it just shows how poor our wingers have been this season. For me, I'm not sure how much better Young can play. I just highly doubt he will return to the levels he had last season. Even then,he was criticised.

That's the point. This is stuff I'd associate with a footie website full of kids, not one of the most decent message boards.

And it's not his fault our wings have been diabolical this season. He's a good player who perhaps won't win you many games but is capable of maintaining the level required. And he did today, unlike some bigger names.

Yeah, thought Young was alright. But I still think he's an average winger that shouldn't be anymore than a squad option.

'It tells you a lot about our standards...' is becoming the Cafe's classic nowadays. We've been banging on about the low standards these days (which is right in itself), yet it's the player who apparently drags the level down that is performing better than those allegedly good enough. I call it irony.

He played wll compared to most of our players, but he's always going to be a little too limited to satisfy everyone's expectations of him.

Both he and Welbeck were picked because of massive work rate in attack and defence, I think they provided that. I think the players we picked for creativity, VP, Rooney, Giggs, Carrick performed worse than our wingers. That said, it would be nice if we could get some creativity back on our wings, Nani or Kagawa instead of Young would've been my choice but that would mean sacrificing Giggs and I think SAF was looking for a big performance from Giggsy.

Which is stupid if you ask me.

He wasn't bad, but I do expect better from him. He can be much more of a threat when he's on his game. He needs to find the penetration in his play and the variation that keeps opponents guessing. When our midfield isn't up to par then the wings have got to be the inspiration.

It's a shame he's picked up another injury though. Every time he get's a setback he seems to lose some more momentum.

He was decent. There was ONE time in the match he decided to be positive, and that resulted in Welbeck played in behind the defence and subsequently a shot on goal by Young. It's amazing what being positive does.

I dont often do this but Ashley was pretty annoying, his link up play could have been better and then whip the ball into the box. He gets the balls then feins a pass comes inside and then the momentum of the attack fizzles out. in fact he is as poor as Valencia and i am finding it hard to understand how he justifies a place in the team over nani. Nani is at least a better goals scoring threat.

Ouch, could that mean the unthinkable .. ?
