Smashley Young

He's fast becoming into a very pointless winger. Constantly passing backwards, not taking his man on. I don't even know what he offers to the team.

He has turned into Park doing only the things you mentioned. Extremely frustrating.

How the feck can you regain form by sitting on the bench?...:lol:

So you'd play every off form player to just hope they regain it?

Young isnt good enough to keep playing even when not in form. He should be benched, made to come on from it in games and made to work on his game in training before being started again.

It's what both he and Valencia have done for the last month or so. Rafael is the best winger our team has right now.

If it's a problem in his head then the time away from the spotlight could help. Get his head down in training, sort his shit out. The opportunity to come in to matches for 15-20 minutes or so against tired defenders could also be beneficial for one's confidence, as it's a good opportunity for an attacking player to shine. If he is carrying a niggling injury the rest could help him too.

He's not quick enough to consistently beat full backs, his feet aren't quick enough to best them with a trick/feint, he's not strong enough to run through people and his delivery recently has been shite. He's relying on work ethic to get him a place in the team and somehow it's working.

Without wanting to sound like a prick, I think we should just sell him, personally. There are loads of theories about how he can get his 'form' and what not, but the truth is, he's in his peak years, was an expensive signing, and has nearly never looked good enough to be here. He is unlikely to get much better either. Simply a case of him sticking his head into top club football to see if he belongs there, and finding out he doesn't, to me. Belongs a level below us, and sometimes that is just a fact that continuously chaging the settings will not mask.

Of course, while here, I will continue to support him. But he shouldn't be here. If he were a youth product, or a cheap signing, I may well judge him differently, I dunno. But he cost the same amount and earns more that the two better wingers we have than him. Sorry, I'm not afraid to simply say he's not a good enough player.

My main gripe with him is the way he submerges into his shell whenever we aren't flying. He just takes no responsibility at all.

That's not what I expect from an experienced player with a feckload of international appearances to his name. That might be excusable if he's in the start of his career, a young player still finding his feet, but if you're playing regularly for United as a quite big signing then it's just not good enough. He needs to help dig us out of holes, he needs to be able to turn matches around, at the moment he's just a complete non-entity when our game isn't top notch.

Who an earth would pay the 100k a week he is reported to be on? No chance of selling him.

He's a good squad player to have in the park mould, it's just when the rest of the attack/team isn't in form his safety first approach becomes more frustrating. He's still our hardest working winger and when in form can be a good option for tougher games, right now though he's just making things harder for us.

Can we praise him for bringing defensive solidity on the left? At least Evra is not getting exposed like a porn star this season.

He needs to do better offensively and should make better efforts then just passing it backwards to the midfield but his defensive contribution is hugely unappreciated here.

He's at Manchester United. That kind of shite isn't enough. He's fecking average, and a flat track bully. Genuinely angers me watching him play for us

He's a curious player, he looked simply amazing in the 8-2 against Arsenal, but I don't know if he's had another game close to the same quality.

He has Nani's tendency to disappear for parts of games, but doesn't seem to pop up for goals and assists with Nani's regularity.

I think he's a good squad player but for me he shouldn't start when Nani and Valencia are fit.

The early pages of this thread are hilarious to read now. Everyone still thought we would sign a central midfielder that Summer...

... except noodle.

I'm actually surprised to see how little my opinion of him has changed, I thought I was pretty positive about us signing him but that's not really the case.
I think the reason many are underwhelmed by the idea of Young, or that he's underrated, is because as a winger he's shown very few signs of development since his move to Villa. He was an excellent set piece taker, a threat carrying the ball at pace, two-footed and had a good delivery in open play from the moment he signed for them.

He added no real subtlety, awareness or consistency to his game since his first full season at Villa, which to this day is still his most productive (in both goals and assists) also. To show so few signs of progression after 3 and a half years at a young, developing team that was progressing itself will cause people to ask questions.

He still plays on instinct, he's shown so little progression in his decision-making it has to be a worry. Wingers will always have that side of their game to them, granted, but it shouldn't be such a major part of their game if they are playing at a top club where you will have much more possession and have many more options than the simple beat your man and whip it in.

That said, I think he's shown signs of progression and a lot more subtlety to his game since being moved centrally. It may just have been because Villa played with such a basic (but effective) style under O'Neill that Young didn't have to expand his game or wasn't given the opportunities to, his game was around being a ball-carrier at pace for quick breakaways and providing a constant source of delivery from wide areas for a very one-dimensional target men. It's hard to play more sophisticated football with Carew, Heskey and the like.
It makes it even more worrying about how he's once again stagnated after a relatively impressive final season with Villa and first season with us. Sir Alex must've thought he could figure out what it was that was missing in Ashley Young's mentality to really unlock his potential, because it's easy to forget that there was a lot of excitement about his potential when he first played in the Premier League with Watford.

Yes, River Runs Red was getting a lot of stick for being a nay sayer, though it is still a bit early to judge whether the signing has been a good one or not IMO.

Well any negativity was getting lots of stick at the time. noodle totally slated the signing at the time and he was pretty much gang raped by everyone for doing so, but a lot of what he said then is pretty much what everyone is saying now.

I can't really remember if I thought it was a good signing or not when he got him, my first comment was positive, but I do definitely remember being underwhelmed, though I think that was slightly to do with the fact that we looked like we'd be (muppet mode) getting Sanchez at first.

I do remember thinking it was a lot of cash, but at the same time we were getting another good "rotation" option on our wings, and that it shouldn't stop us buying the midfielder we so needed.

Sadly, nearly a year and a half later, with him seemingly a first choice option over my favourite player, and not in my eyes good enough to be a first choice option, as well as the fact that we never signed a fecking central midfielder, I do think it was a totally "meh" signing and not worth the money/wages paid at all.

I didnt.

What do you think is different? Was it that this time last year you thought Fletcher would be coming back? To me things seem very similar. You had Scholes retired then, whereas now we might have him, but either way I am loathe to rely on him. Cleverley has been injured but I have more confidence in his ability to emerge and make a mark than I did 12 months ago, so in that sense you could even say the need is less pressing this year. Anderson's problems have been pretty consistent over a longer period that the last year.

I cant see much reason to believe this summer is a very different scenario to last summer. They seem equally pressing scenarios to me, but given SAF didnt seem to see the urgency last summer, I worry he wont this summer either.

As far as I recall in terms of Young, I thought he was a perfectly good player but the wrong signing. Always nice to have competition for places, but more important to have the strongest first XI you can before you worry about that, and I wanted to see... well, we all know what I, most of us, wanted to see.

But yeah, by the summer I was already resigned to that not happening.

Yeah probably sums it up for me too, and from looking back at the early parts of the thread ("it's only June, we'll buy a central midfielder regardless, stop moaning") I'm sure a lot of people share that view now too.

Never felt we were going to get a centre mid till both Scholes and Giggs have both gotten off the books. We have enough quantity in the middle.

I was really underwhelmed when we signed Young, I had the same feeling for when we signed Berbatov. Just could not see him being a success here given the money we paid for. At the mid point of last year I tried to change my expectation of him as a first team player but that is what he is now and it isn't good enough.

I do think it's quite bad on Young's part if he is being outplayed on the flanks by Welbeck as was the case on the weekend.

He's shit. He's had about two decent games for us and one of them was against a severely understrength Arsenal side. Never understood why we bought him, it was a very Liverpool-esque signing really. He is at best a squad player to practically every team looking to finish in the top 6. To put it into perspective, I would go out on a limb and say that if we had a player like Adam Johnson instead, we wouldn't notice any difference in quality, if anything, he'd be a better option lol.

I'd rather we go rid, but by the looks of things it'd be Nani to go before him. I just hope to God we start playing something like this as a main first choice attacking four:

Valencia Rooney Kagawa
van Persie

As soon as we possibly can.

We're not going to get rid of Young. We are stuck with him for the next 4 years. No other club would pay his salary and he has no incentive to leave.

I remember being down in the newbies and saying we didnt need Young. Specially at the price we were getting him for. Then he came on and looked great at the start which made me think i had the totally wrong impression. Its all come around to where it started though. Far too average for the fee and the wages we're paying him(if correct). Still, he is good enough to be a squad player. Not his fault we've got ourselves into a situation where Ashley fecking Young comes straight into the 11 after a lengthy lay off.

Yeah, pretty much. If we're paying him 100k a month, he's never going to leave.

We should set Geoff Shreeves on him:

GS: "Ashley, have you looked at RedCafe recently?"
AY: "What is RedCafe?"
GS: "Its the leading Manchester United online fans forum."
AY: "No, I havent seen it. Im not really into computers."
GS: "They hate you."
AY: "Who?"
GS: "United fans. They all hate you. They dont think you are good enough, they think you are a diver and they want you sold and Nani restored to first choice."
AY: "I, er, I..."
GS: "How does it feel to not have the confidence of your own fans, Ashley? It must be hard to get out of bed in the morning, isnt it Ashley? I bet every time you look at your bank balance it is a reminder of how utterly you have failed to live up to expectations, isnt it?"
AY: [Weeping]
GS: "Ashley, thank you."

Well we know that's a lie.

Which does raise the question of how often do we not renew a player's contract because they're just not very good? Not because they're ageing, or because they've fallen out with Fergie, or because they want to move elsewhere, but just because they're no good? I suppose normally in that situation we sell them before the contract runs down (a la Berbatov).

Well, if things dont improve and we dont want to renew, we'l look to offload him with a year to go on his contract for whatever we can. If not, i think we'd let him leave for free. No way would he get a renewal though.

A lot I suppose will depend on the new manager anyway. I can't see Pep being keen on Ashley Young for example.

And we'll definitely recoup the £17m we paid Villa for him (with a year left on his contract).

... won't we?

I wish we were as good at getting such prices. Much to do with the size of the club though, so wouldnt blame us.

Doesn't deserve games currently. He's been worse in the last month than Valencia was.

How the feck can you regain form by sitting on the bench?...:lol:

Umm does every player regain form by being persistently played as a starter till he finally turns good? That only happens with the better players who even off color offer something decent to the team. I think coming on as a sub against tired defenders might help him contribute and lift his confidence. A few reserve games would have been option but he doesn't strike me as suitable to that kind of treatment.

Also, he's playing just awfully right now and it's hurting our performances.

Ashley Young would be rated at less than 5m if he played in Spain. He has been unbelievably ineffective for us apart from a few games. I can't remember my stance on the signing originally, but I don't think I was overly confident about him being a success here. The Arsenal and Spurs games aside, I can't really remember anything that stands out from his time here. Probably the most underwhelming signing in recent times. His stats from Villa were not bad, but remember he was taking penalties and pretty much all set pieces there, and had towering players like Carew, Collins and Dunne to aim for. I've been disappointed with his crossing which people said was one of his main strengths when joining us.
