Smashley Young

He should not be playing at the moment. I rate the guy (unlike many here) I haven't forgotten what he's capable of on form. But at the moment he, like the other wingers, ain't on form.

Some people giving him shit in the matchday thread, when was the last time he dived?

He did a pathetic 'Stevie G Star Fish©' against Gala after he failed miserably to go past the indomitable Emanuel Eboue.

I'll always support a united player, even if I don't think he is ever going to make the grade! feck me..I supported Bary Birtles until he was out the door! However, he really really is out of form and very short on confidence and needs some time out I reckon. I know people will say his confidence will only come back if he plays in the first team...but honestly he doesn't offer us much and the way we are set out to play..demands that he does.

I meant GARY

Average from him again. I just think he's a good player but nothing more than that. He works really hard, generally keeps the ball well and is capable of the odd screamer/great ball but that's it. It's not like he has problems where he'll just try and beat too many players or doesn't think he just is way too safe. Right or left wing he doesn't turn enough to try and take his man on and coming inside he doesn't have enough quality to truly create. Rooney was much better on the left than he was and Welbeck was much better that him over the game. He can do more but in general I just can't see how he can be in the team long term.

At best he is simply average...not sure why we continue to play him when off form Nani is miles better.

Needs to be dropped till he regains some form. He's playing terrible right now. Cleverley would do more coming in off the left.

i don't mean to sound crass, but he can feck off with his performances of late.

looks hesitant to do anything but the safe option and give it to his full back.

He's completely out of form. It's up to our management to decide whether to persist till he regains it or drop him. It's not as if he isn't trying.

Off form Nani is also injured, while Valencia isn't doing himself any favours. Until that changes I feel we need to show him a bit more patience. The 'returning from injury' excuse can't last much longer but he does need more time to find his form.

He better take these opportunities while he can.

Midweek against Eboue.

 (Didn't see the match)

Still, it's laughable that every time he goes to ground, the majority on here assume he dived. He was pushed and wasn't going to take shit from any hatchet men QPR have. The comparison to Suarez was amazing, apparently he does as much as that racist bastard does.

Some of the hate is certainly unjustified, but I do find it strange that this season, Fergie has had no problem dropping Rooney, Nani, Giggs, and now Valencia and Carrick for poor form, yet somehow Young seems immovable from the team. Strange.

At best he's a fairly good player, but then the problem is that at a club like this, if you're getting games as a fairly good player then you have to deliver. He seems incapable of doing so and has been shocking this season.

He showed how good he can be when he played for Villa and his start for us last season. Let's hope it's bad form and not something we have to get used to his last year.

He was pushed in the back, a fairly blatant two handed push but he does have a reputation and like Suarez, sometimes it counts against him. I don't think the comparison with Suarez is too unfair, Young tends to exaggerate every foul by doing that weird thing where he flicks his legs out in a very unnatural way.

Thing is it's one thing excelling for a club like Villa because although your team mates might be inferior, the other team will unlikely be setting up to make sure they don't lose when they face you, you can play in much more space. At united in the majority of games the other team is setting up to stay solid and so you have to do more to create space for yourself and Young is very reliant on others creating the space for him or giving it to him in space.

Please take half of whatever it is he's making each week and give it to Nani.

Correct. That game when he scored the winner against Everton and got labelled 'world class' by O'Neill was a perfect example. Against us, Everton would've been happy with a 2-2 draw that they'd snatched and wouldn't have left him the space to do what he did for a team like Villa. He's not a terrible player by any means, but his form at Villa can't be solely used to say he'll come good again here when he's only produced the odd spell of good form.

The only time he's done decently this season is at Stamford Bridge and when he was shifted to right wing vs Norwich. I hope we drop both our wingers for the West Ham match.

Yep and the best games that he's had for us that i can think are the ones where the other team has attacked us more leaving space to work with. A good player to have and can come in and do a job well, even as say a park like player for the big games, but when we need real creativity from him I just find him lacking, he can produce but we really don't see it over whole games enough.

I thought he hid today, didn't take his man on once, when you're a winger for United you have to make the play, especially when we are playing with the 2 CM's we started with today who sit very deep.

Shouldn't be starting games at the moment. The injuries we have and the fact Fergie thinks you must start every game with a winger(regardless of whatever form they're in) are keeping him in the team.

He just goes into his shell far too easily. Given how he's performed so far he must've gotten a fair few rollicking's from Sir Alex but he keeps coming out and doing the exact same thing.

Not sure what to say about Young right now. After a fairly good 1st season he really has not progressed at all.

He did beat players last season and he also put in a really good shift. He was turning into a better version of Park.

Three words: pisses me off!

I know he's been out injured, but atm he offers nothing; he doesn't seem to have pace, his right foot looks tangled into his left foot leading him to fall over and/or mishit the ball. If he starts dribbling and, wait for it............ tries to take on his man, his head, for the first time in the match, bobbles upwards and he looks up, realising that he is standing in the exact same spot as he was when he began his step overs; then he panicks, tries to run back to his goal or make a backward pass, painfully losing the ball to any defender who bothers to show up.

God, it's a wonderful game...

Wingers are Fergies Sacred cows.

He's not though. That's why the club are going to sell him.

Nani's apparent troubles must have something to do with off the field issues - there is no way that Young is a better option than Nani. It's not even close.

Almost as if they were playing two different sports; I was actually excited when United signed Young as I thought he would take the step up; too good for Villa!
However, he has yet to show this except for bits and pieces here and there. Nani is clearly the better player; he can open up play on his own, links up with other players better, and crosses the ball better at pace (from a standstill, Young is arguably better).

Dunno why, he's been like that for about 5 years.

You think so? When I watched Villa games, zzzzz, I always thought he was the stand-out player who offered pace (Agbonlahor is lightning of course), trickery, a decent shot and good crosses. I'm sure he has all of those still, but he looks so afraid to take on a man and possibly lose the ball that he limits his play. Noticed how he looks down at the ball far too much also, as if he doesn't realise his surroundings well enough?
