Should we consider selling Pogba?

If we got the money needed to buy Rancho yes as I think the team/squad would be better for it. He is a top player though sometimes frustrating so normally you don't want to do it but his worth makes it a strong option if we don't have the finance without it.

I’m not even sure why we have a thread on this.

If we are to progress on where we’ve been, selling Pogba is taking 5 steps back.

I’m sure we can all remember the occasions when Pogba has been injured. We’ve looked absolutely dire in any kind of build up play. We’ve been crying out for his return.

Just last season is a prime example of Pogbas Utd career. Whenever he’s missing, we realise then how good he is.

Last season we had our worst start ever and were abysmal till the end of January without Pogba. Bruno’s arrival put everyone’s concerns about Pogba on the back burner. But since he returned to the team we played some scintillating football at times and produced title winning form to clinch top 3 from being 14 points behind Leciester and playing the worst football in years.

We need to stop following the Graeme Souness narrative of criticising Pogba. We already know Pogba has more in his locker than he actually produces. But even what he produces is miles better than what most players can produce.

If we sell Pogba we are back to square one again. We are one injury to VDB/Bruno away from being poor again.

Pogba is not everyone’s cup of tea because of his languid looking nature. But it often goes unnoticed that his ability to pick out passes and transition the play from back to front quickly is what leads to us having so many opportunities. A lot of the praise Bruno has received has been preceded by some brilliant work by Pogba to get the ball to Bruno.

Pogba is a player we only appreciate when he is missing. We used to have the same problem with fans on Carricks back.

Lots of talk of us in talks for Thiago which on top of Van de Beek kind of begs the question on Pogba’s future with us as there’s no way we sign both Van de Beek AND Thiago whilst keeping Pogba seeing as we’ve got Fernandes on top.

When we had Bruno without pogba we played well.

I don't like the idea of blindly selling someone.

If we have targets like thiago, then yes.

Yes we played well. But we played even better when Pogba and Bruno played together. We even had a premier league record of a 4 game streak of winning by 3 goals or more. We were scoring goals for fun.

Yes, but we also played some games worse. I think its possible with the right buys we could do better.

Well we certainly don’t look like selling Pogba this summer with talk of a new contract being signed very close.

Personally I’d rather we kept Pogba and gave him a new long term contract instead of going in for Thiago as we’ve got to regularly pick two out of three between Pogba, Fernandes and Van de Beek already and the money should go towards Sancho instead but I just find it crazy we’d be in talks with Thiago after signing Van de Beek unless the plan was to sell Pogba as there’s no way we can keep the three we have plus Thiago happy as someone would be benched and there’s no way all four could play together either.

Sure, let’s sell our only world class player while championship level players like McTominay, James & Williams play 40 games for us

Even if we do want to sell Pogba (which I don’t agree with), we wouldn’t be able to anyway as no one can afford his market value this summer. No one realistic anyway.

Not necessarily.

Off the top of my head I remember the dire Wolves, Norwich and Spurs games, where we started with Bruno and without Pogba. Generally speaking the times where we've been good with Bruno but no Pogba is when we sit back and counterattack, and there's a lot of space in front. Otherwise Bruno suffers as well.

If we'd been able to recoup what we paid for him last Summer we'd have sold him, nothing surer, and with the acquisition of Fernandes and van de Beek we won't be scrambling around looking for a replacement if he goes this Summer though I think we'll bid big for Milinković-Savić if he goes.

He will sign a new contract and be the heart of the team, much to the dismay of his detractors.

Nothing more needs to be said.
End thread.

It’s gone quiet about him signing a new contract....in fact everything has gone quiet with his agent as well.....if he doesn’t sign a new contract in the next few months then that signals the intent - as mentioned already, his value and the number of suitors has diminished because of Covid but we really don’t want him running down his contract, let’s hope once the window closes he gets buttoned down - I’m assuming him and Mino are looking to see how ambitious we are this window and that will have a big influence on what happens next

Yeah his deal will expired by June 2022. If he doesn't sign a new deal now we must sell him I think. Just another year and he can talk to clubs in 6 months and leave on a free. It'll happen before we'd realize how fast it is.

This is interesting. May I ask what has stopped him from being the heartbeat of the team so far?
He has already been very good topping goals and assists the previous season and recognized as one of the best in the league by the players in the PL, but what has stopped him from being even better, a manager that knows how to use him and connect to him on a human level for one and, playing a football style that suits flair players.

EDIT: it's a similar story with Martial, Rashford, to a degree Fred. We had the wrong manager to make best use of these type of players.

I see. At least you provided some new excuses and tried to be original.

Interesting observation on manager. LVG, Mourinho, Ole. All failed to make best use of these types of players. May I ask WHO might be a better choice?

How has Ole failed when all of them had their best ever season for Man Utd? Pogba was injured most of the season.

When did Pogba play under LVG if I may ask .

I think Ole and the club are missing a trick here, we should hire an impersonator and get him/her to ring say The Sun news-desks a day before a match saying they have it on good authority that Pogba wants to move to Man City, the next match maybe The Express saying he wants to move to Chelsea, and so on ....

In the very unlikely event that Thiago signs then Fred would be the one leaving.

Plus, Thiago is 2 years older than Pogba. Doesn't make sense to prioritize an older player when our window is more geared towards a younger core (Martial, Bruno, Rash, Henderson, Greenwood). Not to imply that he's an old man or anything, just trying to make the point that logically, you want your core together for as long as you can keep them together.

I’d swap him with Thiago, they both play a similar number of games and Thiago is clearly better, roughly the same age also.

I think that Thiago was our plan B if we don't get our hands over VDB. With VDB in the bag we won't be getting any more CM...unless......either Pogba or Fred wants to leave

If we would have got the big fees bandied about for Pogba before corona, I would have sold him. Despite his obvious talent, not justified consistently having that value and would have played a huge part that fee in our transfer business this summer....basically Sancho fee and wages done.

However, nobody is paying anywhere near those fees for him so there isnt value in his fee for rebuilding, so absolutely keep him, though if he is given a new contract, shouldnt be an improved one. Maybe the pandemic could be a blessing in disguise as I think there was a fair chance we would have sold him in the summer and maybe finally we get a more consistent and happier Pogba moving forward with some new and improved players around him, some signs of this already with Fernandes with him of course

I can't see that being the case given how different the two players are.

So we are finally getting good quality depth in midfield with the singings of Bruno and VdB and people want to sell Pogba?
