I think one of the reasons we are likely in for Ramos is because we need a consistently available player in our defence. That, and he brings experience. Two of the major things we lack at the moment.

He's played over 40 games a season for the last 10 consecutive seasons. He's experienced for obvious reasons.

I think we'll end up overpaying him, and knowing our judas luck he'll probably get injured, but I can see why we are in for him for logical reasons, not just to fulfil Woody's muppet desires.

I'm with you on that one, Thiago Silva was head and shoulders above everyone but it's not the case anymore. I'm surprised to see some people claim that Ramos isn't a top 10 center back.

Understatement. Those who don't recognise Ramos as a top 10 CB are deluded/biased/hugely ignorant.

I can understand why some may not like Ramos - hell, even I think he's a hothead and a bit of a cnut sometimes - but he is without doubt in the top 10. I'd personally still put Thiago Silva above him, but Ramos is definitely top 10.

Graham Hunter talked about character, and I think that it's the main thing here, with Ramos in the defense the Leicester debacle is less likely to happen, he doesn't surrender, Otamendi is also like that and he would be a great signing but I have the feeling that he will ask for a transfer to Madrid at some point.

The question is how reliable is the Ramos camp. He's basically admitted (highly unusual) that the information came from Ramos' brother.

Though you also have BBC's word for us making the 28.6m bid.
He said Thiago to Utd was a done deal then I made my feelings clear to him on Twitter and he blocked me...
Covers the big two in Spain pretty well. Was very active during the whole Thiago saga. Was credited with saying it was a done deal to United but what he really said was that we had agreed terms with Thiago and that he really wanted to come.

The most interesting thing here is that he kinda revealed his source for all this (Ramos' brother), not just doing the usual "according to sources".

Thanks for replies

Real have had plenty of defensive collapses during Ramos' time at the club.

If we dont get him there are plenty more fish in the sea. Its nice to have a transfer where i will be happy if we get him but not bothered if we miss out.
Are there plenty more fish in the sea? Who else is available, never mind wants to actually come to United specifically?

He said "less likely" to happen not that they never would. And his time at the club is 10 years, go back 10 years for any club and you'll find results where they got hammered.

I've said it before but it looks like it needs saying again, the obsession with the price is crazy.
Ramos is without a doubt one of the top 10 (if not top 5) defenders in the world right now and our current bid of 40mill EUROS works out at just over one third of what Adidas are paying us each year just to have their name on our kit and on some boards at our stadium. It's a drop in the ocean for a club of our size.

100% agree. I'm all for a bit of financial prudence, but right now we need to flex those muscles to get back to the top. Simple as that.

Leicester like collapses aren't a norm with us either.

That's why at no point I said that it was the norm. That game in my opinion demonstrated a lack of experience and composure, we need to bring experience in that back line.

We had Blackett in defense, of course the inexperience showed.

I agree we lack a bit of leadership and character now too, but I don't think that's the main reason to buy him.

And that's why he would have made a difference, his experience and leadership would have helped Blackett, and by the end of the game we were hoofing the ball forward, that's something else that could have been different.

Like when Rooney was part of the Mata deal?

touche, but slightly different considering Rooney has committed most of his career at united and was just fishing for more money as he has done it previously on his last near end of his contract. Whereas DDG situation is more personal considering he has the opportunity to play for a club like Real Madrid and to move back to his home town.

We need quality, experience, leadership and someone that our other CBs can look up too, there is nobody better for that than Ramos.

Ramos is very experienced, a proven winner and above all a very passionate player who's very emotional during games and he shows it. He's the right character we need in the dressing room.

I really like Ramos and although 29 he could still have 4/5 fantastic seasons with us. We need leaders in our team and he'll no doubt give our back four some stability. I think i saw he had a 90% pass sucess rate last season. Oh and the other thing we have too many pussy's in our team. Apart from Fellaini, Smalling, and Rooney who else can you name in our squad that is up for a physical battle?
Uhhh... Jones?

The only problem with this signing in my mind is he's 29 and its a fair whack of cash. Although he looks and acts younger, also physique wise could well go on for a few years! So decent all round signing if we get this one through.

Not sure if he can speak english, if so his experience will be crucial for our back line!

I agree, this will be key to the deal in the end, the only way I can see Ramos coming. Must admit I'm loving how the club appear to be handling this one.

Well that's how I view it considering Madrid has been pursuing DDG since January, i cant see Madrid accepting this offer unless DDG is part of this deal in some way. It's unknown because DDG hasnt expressed his desire to stay or leave. The only thing that has lead me thinking he is on his way out and could possibly be apart of this Ramos bid is because he hasnt signed that new contract. If United do sign Ramos without DDG being involved then ill be amazed and positively optimistic that DDG could sign the new contract. Woodward would be the man yet again, atm he has handled everything very well.

Buh! It was just an off game, you are simply clutching at straws by bringing up that game. It was the team's combined failure and inexperience. I could easily say that Ramos' erratic ways of defending could have turned that game into a bigger disaster than it was.

I'm clutching at nothing, It's an example of when a player of experience is valuable, nothing more. You are the one who wants to give it more importance that it has.

His age comes with loads of experience and winning mentality. It's fair price, because that's exactly what we lack. He will be surrounded by Smalling and Shaw, so even if he loses some pace (I don't think he relies on psychical attributes), it won't be a problem.

Real wanted both to stay.
Makelele's story is very similar,as he felt slighted by Real's treatment as well, not offering him wages on par with the galacticos, while all his teammates said he was their most important player

No they didnt want them to stay. Bloody hell - you missed the memo's?

Di Maria's face wasnt "pretty enough" for Real's commercial profile (widely reported) & Makelele stood up to Real for on-par wages with some of the other players & he was told to leave in the end. Sure Real slagged the f*ck outta Makelele sayin he was basically shit - couldnt pass or head a ball etc.

Didn't graham bumper say that was incorrect, we've only bid once and madrid have yet to respond.

Also that "bid" we made last week was for 35m, and the figures we see now are at 28m.

Papers said just over £30m, some guessed more. Actual bid just under £30m. It was rejected but Ramos was informed of it, and he told them to negotiate with us.

I listened to the full Hunter interview and don't recall him saying they haven't responded to it. Spanish papers said it was rejected instantly.

I'm not saying there's been two bids. Just one, last week, which was rejected. We are now at an impasse.

I miss Nani :(

...like a bullet in the head man.

Never seen more of a waster than that prick. Absolutely disgusting the way he treated his time with us. Opportunity of a lifetime & he looked like he couldnt give a shite most of the time. 1 good game & 4 crap one's in a row.

I'm glad the club feel the same as i do & want to get rid - even for nothing too!
