I don't see how DDG is relevant really, to be quite honest. Real Madrid can afford to wait another season, if that's what it takes. Just as we can afford DDG leaving at the end of next season, this isn't really a carrot and stick situation; if Ramos signs a new contract and we're banking on signing him to push the DDG transfer fee up, or using it as some sort of carrot to get Real Madrid to sell a player they want to keep we are kind of screwed. The idea defies logic, not to mention Woodward seems to be a shrewd business operator... these sorts of hodge podge deals people come up with are silly and unprofessional. Don't forget players are people so much as they are 'commodities' so to speak. If a player wants to leave, he will go for whatever price, which means DDG will go regardless of what happens with Ramos and vice versa (assuming that is both players' intention).

The likelyhood is that Madrid won't be able to register players next summer.

In that scenario you have to wonder if De Gea might sign a fat extension.

On top of that Perez likes to get his man. It would be very embarrassing if we told him to feck off... and took Ramos.

Yeah, feck off city.

 Meh, he looks better in pink.
Give it some time. Adidas will deck us out in pink as well.

Might take a look at the Real forums, if we sign him their tears are going to taste like nectar.
Do share the joy, if you do!

What...what if De Gea has actually signed a new contract, and he's in on this elaborate plan to bring Ramos to Old Trafford?
Agent Dave making the ultimate sacrifice. The Dark Knight of Manchester.

Well I agree with that but it's hardly relevant to the Ramos transfer. Saying no to Real Madrid until the right fee comes in, knowing that they are unlikely to be able to register players next summer, makes sense in order to push up the fee. Saying "We're not playing unless you give us one of your players in return" is bad business and kind of desperate, as well as unprofessional. On the other hand, denying DDG his move (assuming he wants it) is potentially bad man-management, however DDG is contracted until 2016 and he should uphold that contract and if we had promised to sell him, well whoever made that promise shouldn't be allowed to have any negotiations with players/agents again.

Inda (ex director of Marca ) is talking now in Tv. He said that Madrid is fed up with Ramos. He names Otamendi and Marquinhos. Besides Caridad, another journalist said that Iker, Pepe and Cristiano talked to Ramos trying that he stays

Getting Ramos would also be an absolute massive statement by our club. As big a statement ADM was, he wasn't really wanted by the biggest club in the world. If we get Ramos, we'll be taking the biggest team in the world's best defender and one of the key leaders of the team against Madrid's will.

How do you define biggest club in the world?

Coz from your sentence it seems like it's everton (with due respect) stealing a player from Man Utd... Madrid have only ever taken one player we wanted to keep (and might take another this year) in the past 10-15 yrs that I've watched football...

Perhaps Ramos has had enough of the revolving doors at Madrid, from his contract he thinks he deserves, to sacking of Ancelotti, Madrid's arrogance in terms of the status they think they are at no player will ever complain once they put on the white shirt. They say when one pillar falls the other follows suit, seems the sacking of Anchelotti may have caused problems that Perez thought was not possible, who knows. Will Ramos stay at Madrid? possibly, but we will see. Maybe Ramos sees playing for VG allot more attractive than a season with benitez

Someone on Rawk called him the Spanish David Luiz

Hope the RAWK charm has a reverse effect, and Ramos works out as well as the Spanish Cleverley then. :)

Interesting.

How great would it be if we could unsettle and acquire one of their key players each year?

Plant a seed with Isco early next year and get him to request a transfer. James the following year and Odegaard the year after that.

Actually I'm bored of Madrid. Let's do barca next year :p

Absolutely buzzed about this signing. Can't wait till we finally close this and Schneiderlin! :D

I just hope we get Otamendi too and Real don't end up buying him.

Nectar? I hope they taste like rancid rhino piss..

I don't understand the point you are trying to make? Why would you rather taste like rancid rhino piss than nectar? It's you that will be theoretically tasting them.

It's easy to see why Ramos would love the challenge of playing for United in the PL.

I fully expect, as the PL continues to pull away from the others - in terms of entertainment, global reach, prestige, finances - players from even the top 2 in Spain and Bayern wanted to spend a portion of there careers here.

This saga is really getting interesting now that Real could be suffering the same thing that United and other big clubs outside of Spain's top 2 suffered for years. I have been hoping for years to see Real taste their own medicine, and that might be so.

I think this looks well beyond a move to get a bigger pay rise. It looks almost certainly he's coming to United.

Very established signing. Exciting times.

I have to admit if he was haggling for a simple pay rise he's taken it too far. Madrid fans and Perez must be fairly pissed with this saga. It does look like Ramos wants to leave. I choose to blame Benitez

I see what you did there, there's no denying that as soon as the fat man gets his foot in, shit goes nuclear at any club.

Even if he doesn't want to turn this into an auction (which is pure speculation), Real is not obliged to sell. He's on contract till 2017. The fact that we're playing hardball with them over DDG (which is a fact) will not make things easier. So unless Real generally decides to cooperate, this will be a painful saga. I'm still pretty sure this one deal that won't work out. This is this summer's version of the great Vidal chase.

Err I can't really see that happening... but if it does, cool.

what if Real plays the same hardball? Ramos will have to co-operate with them right? EURO comes calling next summer, he won't want the risk

We are so close now, I expect this to close by this weekend. May be end up paying bit higher but Ramos is worth every penny.

God I hope not. Ramos and Smalling as first choice with Jones, Rojo and McNair as back ups is looking good though.

Does anyone think Jones will be used as a RB and we might not end up buying an RB with Valencia, Jones and Rafael (if not sold) along with Varela for cover (depending on the chances he gets / takes on pre-season tour)

Thats where I have him on Fifa at the moment. Before that was Young

Sergio Ramos is a top-tier, world class defender who has immense talent, experience, and is a proven winner.

This would simply be an incredible signing if Woodward manages to pull it off, especially with how quickly this seems to be moving.

In fairness, the great Vidal chase was all media driven. We didn't put in a bid there, as we have here.

After readng this article from Sid Lowe from a couple of years back I'm now pretty convinced this is going to happen. Didn't know Ramos' Dad supported United and to see quotes that show he clearly has an urge to experience the Premier League is encouraging for sure as he will know full well if he doesn't move now that opportunity may pass him by. I think we will have to go up to £40m or so to make Madrid accept and I sense Woodys going to be getting a lot of love from everyone on here over the next week or so when things start progressing.
