Sergio Germán Romero | Close to signing? - Rumours persist...

Sergio Germán Romero - Good enough for Old Trafford?

  • Excellent replacement - bring it on if De Gea leaves!

  • I'm not exactly overwhelmed, but if LVG says he's good enough then...

  • Hmm, maybe as a back-up keeper, but not first choice.

  • Aggh - no way, he's 28, won't improve and isn't good enough even as reserve keeper.

  • Sergio who? Never heard of him!

Lindegaard is gash. His 'performance' in our 4-3 win against Reading a few seasons back remains the worst United goalkeeping display I can remember. Just utter crap.

I don't remember ever seeing Romero play but he'd have to go some to put in a performance as shite as that.
he's alright for no2, this criticism he's getting here is silly, footballers have bad games believe it or not, more so when he doesn't get a sniff in for a long period of time.

How about questioning our defense? or overall poor defensive play which led to goals

Di Marzio says its done so its done i'm guessing he'll be the number 2 keeper and if so hes a solid option.

Is Romero really that bad as many people says he is? People say he is really weak in the air, but the guy is 192 cm, can he be that bad? If De Gea leaves, which he problary will, is Romero too bad to be our number 1 keeper? If he is, what are the alternatives?

There is nothing in height. Pantilimon is 6'8" or so still he is worse than casillas or valdes who are just 6'.

Romero for some reason has found himself as backup keeper in midtable Italian clubs. He was behind stekelenburg at Monaco. And stekelenburg wasn't even fit to be Fulham first choice. Doesn't paint a pretty picture for him being first choice for sure

I know he has been backup everywhere basically, apart from AZ it seems. It's strange for me to see why LvG want Romero if he is that bad though

Sergio Germán Romero.

Ah right, I get it now...

I've really not seen enough of Romero to say if he'd be a good signing.

But happy to just trust LVG on this one especially as he's worked with him before.

People make it out that he's bang average but thats only on the fact he hasn't played much club football. Watching him for Argentina he's actually decent. The one thing he has is confidence, in the penalty shoot-outs at the World cup and the Copa he backed himself and won 2 out of the 3.

Decent back-up keeper to have.

It's peculiar how all the other teams used him as backup. He seems to be doing alright for Argentina.

Few good things in this deal apart the price...

He's indeed in a good form, recently two good tournaments on high international level while Valdes was bit of a riddle all the time here since arrival. He's 28 and for the goalkeeper it means he's in his prime years. He could even give us six, maybe even seven good years of goalkeeping also thanks to his good attitude and ongoing friendship with LvG.

For supposedly a back up option it may be another value for money signing plus what I personally think is that it will also help us in attracting other Argentina's aces in future, perhaps it could help Di Maria to settle in the team better.

The faster we'll get him, the less panic in the GK department before upcoming season.

He did alright at the World Cup and is first choice for his country. He'll do us just fine as a number two goalkeeper.

It is painful to think that when De Gea leaves our likely goalkeepers are going to be Cillessen and Romero. It's like we've gone back in time and are reliving the great Carroll/Howard duo.

Who the feck voted for good enough for De gea replacement. Scouser fans shouldn't be allowed to vote

Couldn't be less enthusiastic about him. Both Lindegaard and Johnstone are better than him.

A bit Taibi signing this.

Just realised he is the Argentinian keeper.

So from what I saw in the WC and copa he seems a fine number two

I can't think of many times I've seen him play, but whenever I've watched the Argies in tournaments he's looked fine.

Surely he's better than Lindegaard, and thus an upgrade as a back up.

I wouldn't go that far mate. He's a backup keeper with a ton of experience and LvG has managed him before he knows what he's getting.

He also managed Valdes before and we said the same thing.
The problem with Valdes is he doesn't want to be a back up. He spent years at Barca as the undisputed number one, he's used to being a starter. Romero isn't. He's always been a secondary choice at club level, no matter who he's played for, and seems to be fine with that. He has no competition internationally so can get games there, and still has plenty of career left. I guess it's different for Valdes as he's obviously not as good as De Gea, and Casillas and Reina seem to be before him in the pecking order.

That was ages ago. He couldn't make the spot his own at Samp and Monaco...

Thing is, aren't we supposed to have a really good goalkeeping coach who has worked with LVG for a long while now?
I think that they would have identified this guy together and because they worked with him before, should know his capabilities far better than us.
Just trust the goalkeeping coach...is all we can do.

 Slow Zombie passing, oh how I hate that phrase!!

TBF I believe SAF's last EPL title win as the biggest of his achievement. How the hell did he manage to win the title so comfortably with such a weak squad?

It comes down to the fact that he was one of the greatest managers ever and I don't think we will ever see the likes of him again. He spent next to nothing and managed to get so much from an ageing team. It's a true achievement particularly in the modern cash oriented football world. The man is a legend!
