Sergio Germán Romero | Close to signing? - Rumours persist...

Sergio Germán Romero - Good enough for Old Trafford?

  • Excellent replacement - bring it on if De Gea leaves!

  • I'm not exactly overwhelmed, but if LVG says he's good enough then...

  • Hmm, maybe as a back-up keeper, but not first choice.

  • Aggh - no way, he's 28, won't improve and isn't good enough even as reserve keeper.

  • Sergio who? Never heard of him!

Looks like our Argentinian quota will be increased by 1.

Puzzled with letting Begovic pass by though. If he's willing to be Chelsea's #2 against an immovable object he would have been ideal for us knowing all likelihood suggests that our IO will be gone in a year.

Yeah good point, should have signed Begovic only.

Anyway, LVG looked like confirming the process to sign him is on. And it was BBC's Simon Stone who asked that specific question so might have some info.

From what I've seen at the World Cup last year, he has the concentration of a really good keeper - capable of pulling off a vital save when there's absolutely nothing to do during the match

Not seen much of him but you don't get nearly 70 caps for Argentina without having something about you.

Looks like we really need a keeper. LVG is chopping Valdes because he refused to train with the reserves! Ruthless but I like that.

Good enough to be backup keeper, not good enough to be starter IMO. Like Cillessen he is better than what people give him credit (although I would prefer Cillessen to him).

Forget about if he is good or not, if he is a client of Raiola, then keep as far away from him as possible.

This. He is a marginal player and if we managed to improve him Raiola would be angling for a move. Can't build long-term stability with players that are clients of his.

I don't see the point in spending money (wages) for a #2 when Lindegaard is still here getting paid and has proven himself to be a capable backup in the past. Plus we don't rotate our goalkeepers. De Gea played nearly every single game for us last season.

If someone told me 3 years ago that we're likely to have Romero, Otamendi and Rojo in the United team, I'd have asked when was the last time we finished in the top half of the table. They all looked such weak players for Argentina. Otamendi has since proven my doubts all wrong, Rojo has it all to do and Romero the same

Are we thinking he will replace Valdes as back-up?

Hope so. He was second choice at Fiorentina and PSG recently I believe. Fine for second choice if he's free, but replacing De Gea we would need someone a lt better.

He's worked with Van Gaal before and is used to life as a number 2.

Romero is just a back up keeper, not really a problem.

Don't see the problem with him as #2. Especially as LVG seems to play his #1 whenever they're fit anyway.

I think he'd be a great backup option, if he's willing.

No thanks, I really don't rate this guy at all.

Don't really remember much about him from the WC, except hearing journalists say he was a potential weak spot.

Never rated him, he would be a bit of a downer to this otherwise great transfer window. As a 2nd keeper he would be OK I guess?

Yeah 70 caps for Argentina, he must be really good. They are known for their world class GKs throughout history. I mean getting the spot ahead of Andujar and Guzman, i am convinced he is the right option for our reserve team.

feck off, what a downer.

Would be an excellent back up keeper.. hopefully not our first choice keeper.

That's ridiculous to sign him IMHO. I would trust Sam Johnstone as our backup rather than splashing money over someone who is not rated at all.

Happy enough having him as our number 2. Think of him as the cheerleader for our Argentine players. It also could be much worse; we could be signing Adam Bogdan. :wenger:
