Sergio Germán Romero | Close to signing? - Rumours persist...

Sergio Germán Romero - Good enough for Old Trafford?

  • Excellent replacement - bring it on if De Gea leaves!

  • I'm not exactly overwhelmed, but if LVG says he's good enough then...

  • Hmm, maybe as a back-up keeper, but not first choice.

  • Aggh - no way, he's 28, won't improve and isn't good enough even as reserve keeper.

  • Sergio who? Never heard of him!

Give the #1 spot to Lindegaard, at least he is loyal to club and a decent set of hands

Taibi was significantly higher rated than Romero when we signed him. Bodes well...

Taibi was a bigger name at club level but not an international level. Romero is Argentina's no 1 keeper.

I have mixed feelings about the guy. He hasn't got the CV to be at United. Having said that LVG knows him well. Romero was in fact his no 1 keeper at AZ and he's on a free. Who knows maybe Romero don't mind the bench too much which is rare for a keeper these days

Argentina have a weak pool of goalkeepers, its like being England's left winger. It didnt make Trevor Sinclair a highly rated player

Couldn't be less enthusiastic about him. Both Lindegaard and Johnstone are better than him.

A bit Taibi signing this.
You're not supposed to be excited by signing a number two keeper though, are you?

I don't get this at all. How many f-ing keepers do we need?

If its better than what you have, it should be exciting enough

When its a dodgy keeper its more worrying than anything

He's going to play 5 games a season most likely, it's not worth worrying about. Besides Romero isn't really that terrible.

We need number one and number two, number three could be youngster. We have De Gea who's leaving, Valdes who's leaving and Lindegaard who might also be leaving plus Johnstone who's probably leaving.

It will make sense if both Valdes and Lindegaard leave. They haven't gone yet.

Johnstone - probably does make sense for him to play for Preston this year.

Especially if we already have Lindegaard, Valdes and Johnstone. I'd rather keep Lindegaard. Just don't see the point

Agreed. Let's see how it pans out for him if he does come. Taibi got like what? 4 games.

Lindegaard wanted to leave last summer, he sent his agent across Europe. Maybe it's still the case.

I'm sure its been asked in the thread - but why was he released by Sampadoria? Not good enough...?

It makes no sense why an international goalie, especially one playing for a team like Argentina would sign on knowing fully well he'd be second choice here.

Especially as he's the Argentinian keeper. Surely he needs to play in that case? It is really confusing.

He hasn't been released, his contract was finished.

In which case, was he ever offered a new contract at Samp and he merely rejected it to move on to better things?
This is me genuinely asking now not trying to call him shit. I'm just always skeptical with players who are free agents.

I have no idea, in 2013 he joined Monaco on loan and was supposed to be the starter and sign definitively at the end of the season. But Subasic did very well in Ligue 2 and after that in Ligue 1, so Subasic kept his place, I suppose that Romero and the Sampdoria didn't thought that he would comeback and made plan without each others.

He was backup keeper at Sampdoria. Now backup keeper at United. Guess he doesnt need to play to keep his spot. He has a chance also to grab the position here. Cillessen isnt unbeatable. For him it makes absolute sense to move.

Begovic is the #1 for Bosnia and he's just given up on being a first choice club keeper for the foreseeable future.

It's odd but not unheard of.

Lindegaard was first choice when he came here too. That didnt work out very well for him

Lindegaad was pretty much in the same situation as Romero is now. He had to compete with another new keeper for a first team spot. In Lindegaard's case DDG proved to be a better keeper. Lets see what happens now

At least Lindegaard played before, when he arrived he also played enough games in the first season. Romero was clearly backup keeper the last year, still maintained his place. I am not familiar with the Argentina GKs, but i guess they must be pretty shite if a backup keeper from Sampdoria is their 1st choice.

TBF Sampdoria are owned by an absolute nutter. Massimo Ferrero claimed he knows absolutely nothing about football, he constantly calls his former manager Mihajlic instead of Mihajlovic, he called Inter's owner Thohir 'il filippino' (ie a person from the Philippines) when he's actually Indonesian and asked minority owner Moratti to kick him out of Inter and courted on TV Illaria D'amico who happens to be Buffon's girlfriend.
