Sergio Germán Romero | Close to signing? - Rumours persist...

Sergio Germán Romero - Good enough for Old Trafford?

  • Excellent replacement - bring it on if De Gea leaves!

  • I'm not exactly overwhelmed, but if LVG says he's good enough then...

  • Hmm, maybe as a back-up keeper, but not first choice.

  • Aggh - no way, he's 28, won't improve and isn't good enough even as reserve keeper.

  • Sergio who? Never heard of him!

So am I right in assuming that Romero will be brought in as a replacement for Valdes and as second choice keeper to de Gea and if in the event of DDG leaving we will sign another keeper who would be first choice? Perhaps Cillessen?

He's moving on a free contract as he's no longer needed at Sampdoria. We're obviously not going to have that kind of player as our number 1, it will be surprise if we sign him as number 2

I sure hope thats the case.

He will be brought in as a backup not as first choice, that much is clear, don't worry lads!

I think everyone expects Romero to be our number 2. However, I'm perplexed about where Sam Johnstone stands in all of this; I don't want United to lose him until he shows us what he's made of in an official match.

The kind of signing that you hope (with the greatest respect) you don't see too much of.

As a backup keeper I don't see any problem. I always think its best that your reserve keeper has experience, rather then being a youngster.

If Romero is a step up from Valdes or Lindegaard then he has to be a good signing and improving the squad. Chelsea have set the benchmark with goalkeeping strength with the signing of Begovic as a genuine challenger to an already top class keeper in Courtois. Arsenal have improved immeasurably in the keeping department with Cech and we too need to keep up. I don't know enough about Romero to cast a proper opinion but his CV is pretty good. The remit should be 'Can he challenge DDG ?'

He isnt. Would those 2 be backup at Sampdoria and let go on a free contract?

Back up keepers are the most boring signings, regardless of how good they are, because you know that if they actually play then it's not a good thing as it means your main one got injured or is playing like shit.

Lindegaard is gash. His 'performance' in our 4-3 win against Reading a few seasons back remains the worst United goalkeeping display I can remember. Just utter crap.

I don't remember ever seeing Romero play but he'd have to go some to put in a performance as shite as that.

with Valdes being shown the door he would be an upgrade on Lindegaard for sure (hope he gets shown the door too) but hes not exactly the caliber of GK that we need if De Gea leaves. being the main GK country i dont think it would be a sensible choice for him to come utd to be back up GK

You'll be shouted down on this. The Lindegaard is a solid backup" meme is the new "John O'Shea is a good squad player".

Everyone knows by now that I don't believe the good squad player crap. However I cant really classify Lindegaard since he was never given an opportunity to play. Which is kind of strange considering he has given some solid performances early on his career

If he's free and going to be on low-ish wages then I don't really see the problem having Argentina's no.1 amongst our ranks. I sincerely doubt he'll be our first choice keeper.

Lindegaard plays a decent amount for us in 11/12 and 12/13 and he did fine.

Romero was pretty good in the WC though. If Van Gaal thinks he would make a better back-up keeper then sign him. As long as he's not intended to replace De Gea it's all good.

everyone has a bad day at some point, still hanging on to a game from a few years ago?

Taibi....

I'll take him as a back up. Argentinian number 1 and also free. Plus we are going to let valdes go after all.

De gea is likely to leave for free next summer. Gives us a year to scout and sign a capable replacement by this time next year.

I'd rather we used Sam Johnstone as back up tbh. If we do sign Romero then Johnstone might aswell just pack his bags now.

Sam Johnstone's first touch looked pretty awful on Saturday morning. Not sure whether this is a total lack of technical skill or nerves. If he's not able to control the ball with ease on a consistent basis he has no chance of making it under Van Gaal.

He's on a free and being brought in for backup in Valdes position, I can't really see a negative in this transfer, he's a Argentine international who LvG has worked with in the past, he knows what he's getting.

Give the guy a chance though jeez, It's one game, Not like he is Lindegaard who has always been crap with the ball at his feet. I think it was more nerves then anything having watched him a bit last season when he was out on loan. The only criticism of Johnstone I would say is his distribution in regards to hitting his targets when kicking, But i'm sure the world class GK coaches we have at the club would be best to improve him on that, and that's why I'd rather we kept him.

They weren't keen on a contract extension? For some reason i was under the impression that he was the first choice but just seen that he was on loan to Monaco last season where he only played 3 games. You've got to wonder why nobody wanted him. Hmm.. Still if LVG thinks he's a good enough backup then im ok with that.

That was august 2013, so think he was just 2nd choice at Sampdoria for 14/15 ?

I can't recall that particular performance by Lindegaard but he'd have to have gone some to beat Fosters display in that derby at OT against City. That pretty much finished his United career. DDG didn't exactly cover himself in glory either in the 6-1 against City.

It's also hard to get excited about a backup GK signing. In terms of who we've had in the past in that role I'd say this one wouldn't be too bad.

Happy enough having him as our number 2. Think of him as the cheerleader for our Argentine players. It also could be much worse; we could be signing Adam Bogdan. :wenger:
Bogdan is quality for no2

EDIT: certainly quality enough for midtable club
