I thought he was on about Sol Campbell, I don't count the loan as a swap.

Can't remeber the last time a player swap was involved in a deal, let alone high-profile deals like Brad said.

Ashley Cole / William Gallas.

High profile all right.

To swap a proven Premiership striker for an unproven one and in the process leave our strike force devoid of height and aerial threat in the English game??!! For me, that's a non-starter.

So it is 20m Euro and Berbatov or 40m Euro and Nani.

So either way it is a offer (or suggested offer) of more than 55m Euros.

nani has done nothing since he came to united to suggest he would be sold now for 15million plus. 8 or 9 million possibly. but 15? no chance

If we're honest, for all his height Berbatov offers little aerial threat. This was pretty much confirmed in my mind against Tottenham at home, when, with the goal at his mercy and the ball at a perfect height he managed to head it toward the keeper.

He's not a Ronaldo or a Saha, but he is a decent header. The options are some threat vs little-to-no threat. I know which I'd choose.

He was playing a one-two. It worked didn't it?

really cant see why nani is rated so highly. can be a tricky winger on his day. but 12 or 15 million? cant see it

Oddly enough I wasn't convinced by him until this season just gone which is surprising considering, but he's shown enough for me to think in 2-3 years he could be a top three winger. He's certainly worth more than £9m if Johnsons' fee is anything to go by.

Berbatov wasn't very good in his first season, so I don't see any risk in swapping him as far as 'proven premier league striker' goes. He could very well turn out to be not very good next season as well. And as far as leading the line goes, Berba hardly ever went outside the center circle so I don't see that as a valid argument either. Don't see this happening, mind.

Its really crazy if we see Berbatov leave after just one year. I would love to have Aguero, but I guess we would have to splash the cash then.

Obviously SAF saw enough to stump up £17 mill.

yes a few years ago based on his potential. SAF also paid 28 million for veron and sold him a couple of years later for about half that. I've seen nothing in Nanis united career that would suggest he has held a 17million value and I would be amazed if any other club valued him anywhere near that. thats my point

Not pushing this either way, but Berbatov wasn't really an aerial threat last year given his height.

It would be insane.

Berbatov will be a key player for United come next season.

Lets be realistic here. He might become a good player for us, but going on last seasons evidence can you really claim for sure that this year he is going to be a "key player" for us?

With the "leading the line" arguments, I do believe that Berbatov played deep from instruction from SAF, not out of his own desire. I base this opinion on the fact that in an interview near the end of the season, Berbatov himself said he felt he was being played out of position.
I dont think Berbatov is on the way out, and I do think that next season Berbatov will be deployed in a more advanced role thanks to the absense of Ronaldo.
That is what I hope anyway. I have an eery feeling that SAF will be - frankly - an idiot, and play Berbatov in the deep role and Rooney leading the line, rather than vice versa.

Did you just call SAF an idiot?

Disagree - I think next season will see Berbatov playing pushed right up, with Rooney off him and two wide men providing pace and delivery from the flanks (Valencia & Nani/Tosic?).
Last season we played Ronaldo up front too often, relying on his pace and power to push past the last man, I think now we'll see Berbatov used to hold the ball up and lay it off to Rooney et al. coming from deep, or Berbatov & Rooney getting on the end of crosses from the flanks - especially if Rafael keeps developing nicely. PLus having Valencia should allow us to play two attacking fullbacks (Pat and Rafael) as the wingers will now help them - instead of needing Brown or O'Shea to cover all of Ronnies defensive duties

It really isn't idiotic.

Keane-Berbatov was the best partnership around and that's the way it worked for them.

Can we agree that Rooney is best played deep though, yes?

If so, with Rooney being the standout member of our attack (considering that SAF knew of Ronaldos departure) it would hardly make sense to sign another player occupying the same position as Rooney, with the hope of pushing the #10 forward into a #9 role.

Even Berbatov said he felt he was played out of position last season. For me, it makes sense on multiple levels to play Berbatov leading the line and Rooney in the hole.
