Where have you been watching Cagliari play? Which TV channel?

He's probably seen as much of them as you have of Longstaff tbh. Unless you are an avid Blackpool or Kilmarnock fan. If so, which tv stations did you catch all their games on? You're trying to come across as an expert on a guy that's literally played feck all PL football, it's hilarious. Then you have the audacity to call others out

Or the fact that he's only had 9 Premier League appearances by the age of 21, coming off the back of a knee injury as well?

Nah, must be the English name and face.
Yet everyone was clamouring for Joao Felix who has just broke through for big money.

Maybe signing a boring midfielder from Newcastle just doesn't get the Muppet juices flowing.

Last post was me saying I want to see him as a DM with a more creative player ahead of him.

think we need a creative cm more but Schneiderlin could be a very good signing aswell considering Carrick is nearly 33

That's saying we need creative CM and Schneiderlin is replacement for Carrick.

I've mentioned loads of times I've only watched Longstaff about 5 times and i've listened and read opinions of people who know far more than me. Sky and BT Sports show plenty of prem game here.

I'd like to know where people get the time to watch Lo Celso at Betis, Partey at Atletico and Barella at lowly Cagliari and which channels show these teams regularly? Or is it that people only view YouTube now to pass judgment?

If even that. There was a majority on this forum that were adamant players like Schneiderlin and Darmian were fantastic signings and were desperate for us to sign Serge Aurier. That’s when I knew there are few people on here that you should pay attention to when they talk about these players.

Carrick replaced Keane and they were different players. Carrick was obviously a more talented footballer compared to Schneiderlin on the ball. But Schneiderlin I saw as a destroyer who could play behind two creative #8s.

I literally see no comparisons between the two.

There isn't one. DWelz argued he's only got 9 PL appearances hence why people are against the signing, not because he's unfashionable.

I stated that plenty wanted Felix despite his lack of experience for a far bigger fee.

I'd wager people have seen about the same as both. So clearly some names just get people more excited than others.

Darmian tbf was good in Italy and played well for the Italian NT. Even Gary Neville was impressed. Aurier had played at a high level for club and country and him being rated highly wasn't a surprise.

Its never going to be possible to find a like for like replacement for Carrick, just like there was never a like for like replacement for Scholes, Keane etc. Its about finding a trio of midfielders who can compliment each other and get the engine room running so the attack is well supplied and defense is well protected.

Yup, this. Considering Pogba is our best midfielder we should focus on 2 other midfielder who compliment his style. We are no longer naive in our thinking, perceiving him as the ultimate midfielder with no weaknesses in his game. We should be realistic and allow him to drive forward, which he actually is capable of doing.

It can be quite interesting to go back and watch the videos that posters were watching at the time and remind yourself of what posters would have been expecting. I'm pretty sure that on the basis of this 5 minute video a load of people were expecting Darmian to bring some attacking menace to our right hand side, as it shows him putting in a couple of decent crosses and scoring once or twice.

Felix, 2 years Longstaff's junior, made 25 Portuguese league appearances, 6 Europa League appearances, and 3 CL qualifiers. He also managed to get his first national team cap.

Felix lacks experience, sure, but even still he's a lot more experienced than Longstaff at this point in both of their careers. Even more so given the age differences.

I never watched Torino. But did read the opinions of regular observers of Italian football who work for Di Marzio. Bayern were also interested in him at the time according to DI Marzio. And the Godfather is currently reporting that both Inter and Juve want him.

Slight difference in the price too.

He just looks like a completely different player, it's quite ridiculous. So much quicker, he's marking his man much tighter, his shooting and dribbling :( why does this happen to us?

Sure - but that's not the point that was being made.

You can see why one was coveted, and why one is met with reservations? And it's not to do with being foreign, or Longstaff looking a bit gormless, ffs.

Wouldn’t the 100 million price difference reflect that? Jeez the moaning going on in this thread about spending 20 odd million on potentially a very good signing. He’s a bit untried but for the fee it’s very reflective of that. Shame our fans can’t at least support Ole on his signings, as pretty much if they don’t work, they’re not on big wages and we’d recover a lot of the funds. I like Longstaff, he looks the kind of player who’d look better playing in a better team.

To be fair I've seen neither play football so I don't have a horse in this race. I'd be more peeved about spending €120m of a youngster than €20m. Or whatever the prices are. But that's mostly irrational.

The club believe he will be a regular for England before long according to reports. Should we wait until his price trebles? Or should we sign him now for a small sum, and if it doesn't work it's no big deal.

Players also mature at different rates when they're younger. Zidane didn't leave the French league until he was 24. Ndombele who Spurs signed was a nobody in world football two years ago. Wan Bissaka was sent packing from his loan at little Cambridge just last year, and today he's at the biggest club in England. Things change very quickly in football. Alli and VVD are two more examples.

I remember people posting videos of Aurier and raving about how we have to sign him. He was shit even in the videos. It’s the same with Meunièr for me. He’s barely been PSG’s first choice but because they’ve seen him cross to Lukaku a couple of times for Belgium he becomes a must sign player. Meanwhile, he’s still at PSG, not playing every week.

He's played 99 games for PSG in three years, while competing for his place with Alves, not fecking Ashley Young. He's been an integral part of our national team, not for just a few crosses. He would have been a big upgrade on our options from last year. Aurier is a decent player with mental problems. That being said, I'm glad we have bought Wan-Bissaka.

Not really sure what's holding this one up tbh. If we want him just pay the £25m. He's one we really should have ready for the whole pre-season to see how he fits in. Player clearly wants to join. We seem to be extending this for no reason

I remember at the time posting are you sure this guy isn’t a left back as most of his good stuff comes from that side and guess what...... He turned out to be a crap right back.

Yeah it does seem a strange decision, I do remember he played RWB against England and was the MOTM, he just looks a different man. He looked powerful and quick when running with the ball, now he's like a docile mouse.

I guess being away from Italy takes him out of his comfort zone.

20 mil is nothing these days and he (if only some) PL experience. These knee ligament injuries are always a worry but it is worth the gamble.

Has he had a serious knee or ankle injury before we signed him because that seams to affect a players dynamism? He's certainly not the explosive player I thought we were signing.

Another poster mentioned the damage to his knee was not serious when compared to other ligament injuries.

Schneiderlin and Darmian were good for their former clubs though. For whatever reason they just were terrible at Utd. Hell I think I remember Darmian winning player/defender of the month at the start of his 1st season with us. I had seen a lot of Schneiderlin for Southampton and he was genuinely very good. Don't know how he declined so drastically following his move (including at Everton)

A lot of great players just haven't worked at Man Utd. The same can be said of every other club.

Football director Paul Mitchell seems to have a midas touch, but for most managers, directors, head scouts, head of recruitment, in most places it's the same deal. This includes much lauded clubs such as Man City and Liverpool.

2 months would suggest a moderate injury (which shouldn't require surgery in most cases) but i wasn't able find any specifics

Nah Schneiderlin was always incredibly underwhelming, he just played in a system that suited him at Southampton. I'm not having that he just randomly declined.

Well I haven’t seen Felix ever, but feck me what a debut season he had. I mean he’s what 19, and he just scored 20 goals and broke into the Portuguese NT during his first season playing senior football. Atletico in turn made him one of the most expensive players of all time. He obviously has something about him. Of course, he could be the next Renato Sanches. I remember reading all the hype about him and when I actually got to watch him at the Euros, I genuinely thought people had been watching a different player as he was terrible.

Thing about Longstaff is, that unlike Felix, there’s literally nothing to judge him on. Unless of course people want to claim they bizarrely followed his progress on loan at Blackpool or Kilmarnock. I just find it amusing some have a shit tonne of posts in here with analysis of him when there’s nothing to go on bar what, 7 or 8 PL games.

If we sign him I’m ok with that as it sounds like he’ll be relatively cheap. But I won’t pretend I have a clue whether he’ll be a success or not.

I really like the thinking from United here. First, we strengthen right back and Dalot with AWB, and then CDM/CM and McT/Matic/Fred with Longstaff. Here's to hoping this transfer will be done soon enough!

I don’t really care what they do but I just find it slightly hypocritical you have a go at them for watching YouTube or whatever when you are hyping up Longstaff based on 5 games and opinion pieces. I wager those games you watched him you barely took any notice of him.

You demeaning their opinions on players that you reckon they barely watched doesn’t really stand when you confess to having watched Longstaff 5 times and yet have formed an absolute opinion on him.

Well maybe it was because of the system but I don't think you could have determined that he wasn't a good midfielder posting good numbers without the benefit of hindsight
