Not sure about this one, hes barely played any football at the top level. Is he a Herrera replacement?

It was not as rosy as you are making it out to be during that summer window. Scholes looked to be in the decline and had an injury with his eye the season before.

Fletcher was potential and even then we never thought he would come good but did couple of years after Carrick already being in the team.

Ronaldo was very inconsistent and Rooney was good then. Giggs was not ripping full backs to shred, he started to lose pace.

When Carrick was signed, he allowed scholes to shine and furthermore he allowed us to play quick counterattacking football. Along with shoring up the defensive side as well.

I am not saying Longstaff will make the same impact, it’s a massive risk but you sometimes with football you never know.

Chelsea, the league Champions had just signed Ballack and Shevchenko. Carrick was our only major signing and I thought for sure we would finish 2nd to chelsea

That Youtube video sold me. He looks very good. I'd definitely take him for 25m based on that.
Youtube never lies, right?

25m is pocket change considering if this kid continues his devleopment trajectory that figure would easily triple. I didnt think he'd move this year. Very shrewd from Ole if true.

Newcastle current situation makes this transfer less probable. New owners and possibly a new manager will likely lead to a freeze in transfers until situation is clearer.

Just fecking sign him.

Actually feck it, sign every young players with huge potential. We have signed the likes of Pogba & Mi Amigo and They didn't shine. You would think They aren't even close to a finished product let alone world class players during their time here. Let's change the approach.

Talent and potential wise I think this is a great move.

Does anyone know more about the severity of his knee injury though? I keep reading ‘he’s learning to walk’.

I’m all for this signing. It’s the kind of signing Sir Alex would have made back in the day and at worst the signing would have been a fine squad option who’d give his all for us. I definitely see those shades of Carrick in his play.

After the past few years, I’d rather have people like this signing for us than the exotic Johnny Foreigners we’ve been accustomed too in the past few years who ultimately don’t give a feck, check out mentally on the regular and want that payslip more than the 3 points when the weekend rolls around.

I remember the summer of 2006 in times where Juan Roman Riquelme was the hottest thing on the market and how Utd should sign him because Keane got sacked and no one knew if Scholes would have returned after his eye troubles. We also were linked with Carrick, who only had a small number of people who said he looked amazing but the majority being essentially “Fecking hell we’re after Spurs players? A guy who’s only scored 2 goals all season? Fergies lost it!”

We end up signing Carrick and either everyone bemoans that we didn’t get Riquelme because he chose to go to a better club at the time (back in the mid noughties transition era) or we didn’t have that much money to spend and we’re only buying him because he’s English... Coupled with Chelsea picking up Ballack for free too.

Come May 2007, it’s all forgotten about.

He's a very classy player with high potential. Would be a fantastic signing at a potentially good fee.

I might be in the minority here but i'd be very happy if we can sign this lad. His vision and passing is top notch from what i've seen in the 4 games i've watched him play. Could play as the #8 or #6 and would be a improvement on the ball over the departed Hererra. Would also be a significant improvement over the likes of McTominay, Matic and Fred too.

If we sign him I think it won't take him long before he becomes a mainstay in the team. If Garner proves to be good enough aswell, then that is good news as far as squad depth goes.

I’d personally prefer if we don’t go after him.

United need a handful of solid reinforcements this summer to get the squad talent above sea level. 1 project signing has already been made on James and that in all likelihood means we’ll make 3 or 4 more signings tops. If we get another sort of ‘project’ in Longstaff, I think it leaves our squad depleted and desperate for even 4th place since it’d leave just 2-3 signings to actually reinforce the squad with proven/experienced players. That’s not enough with the state our club is in atm.

...so yea, I’m against it strictly because of that. Not because I don’t like the player (I wouldn’t mind him) but because I don’t want him taking away a potential signing that’d immediately bolster our lineup which is what we need. Like I said, we already got James. And Ole has already said it won’t be some fifa manager overhaul with 7 new players. I think 5 was the max and doable if 1 was a younger, cheap player which we already got. So let’s make the most out of our remaining signing slots :)

This is the type of player we need to bring this year.
We can colour in the book next season after we draw a plan.
I agree. Look at what Leicester did with Madison. He is the sort of player if we dont get now we ill be after in a year or 2 for 3 times the cost

All the midfielders available. This guy should be last. Let him stay and play at his current level.

Have to say, you guys are reaching with the Mane, Wijnaldum, or Fergie's successful past signings comparisons. This is more similar to Nick Powell.

Why does it make more sense to spend money on he, but not give Garner a try? He barely has anymore PL experience than Garner. So knowing that we're going for a punt, and not a proven starter, why not give Garner that chance?

If he's in our youth system you want him in our first team. If he's already shown good stuff in the PL but is not from our youth system he's another Nick Powell. Is that about the height of it?

I get that you're really passionate about our youths and it's great to see people taking an interest but there's absolutely no need to feel threatened by signings like this. We need to have 5 or 6 midfielders in the squad at any time. Right now we only have 2 imo that realistically will be of a decent standard for the next few years. (Pogba & SM) There is absolutely no reason we can buy a couple this Summer and still have plenty of room to develop Garner.

Say we sign 2 of Longstaff, Rabiot, Tielemans this summer. That would still only leave us with 4 long term CMs for 3 positions. There's plenty of space for Garner and Gomes to join that group when/if they are ready. As it stands its not even an issue for Garner because he is 17. He's doing really well at his current level but he's not yet strong enough or not good enough to be a proper CM for a club like United. When he's 21, like Longstaff is now he most likely will be. Maybe even when he's 19 or 20. There's will be plenty of room for him if he's good enough.

We are not going to sort anything in one transfer window. We need to focus on building a team.

Anyone thinking we are going to massively improve is in for a shock - this will take time and investing in some young players who can grow into it is the right thing to do.

The Carrick similarities are uncanny. If he is what he looks like we've found gold here and we need to sign him. Just pay whatever it takes

Of course a team can massively improve in one transfer window. We have plenty of areas in need of improvement - so that’s plenty of opportunities. Sign a player for a weak position who is of good quality and provides something which is missing and we improve. Get three or four signings right and that’s a massive improvement. I don’t understand why you would dismiss the immediate impact on the squad while looking to build the team.

His name sounds quite wizard-like; Sean The Longstaff.

Let's hope his performances are just as magical if this goes through.

I’m not saying we’ll turn it around in to a top2-3 team in the league right away, no.

However, with the amount of financial backing we’ll have this transfer window (which is supposed to be more than usual AKA a lot), we should expect some impact players to make us significantly better than we were this past season. Especially with dead weight players leaving and being able to address positions of need which have been lacking for 5+ years now.

Those impact players might not fancy us right now though not matter how much financial backing we have. We’re out of the CL for a third time and haven’t come close to even challenging for the league since Fergie left. We’re not the most attractive proposition right now, and when we are it’s quite likely for all the wrong reasons i.e money.

Besides, I don’t see it as inevitable that Longstaff would get in Garners way. Considering Garner has played some in defence whilst, from what I read on here, Longstaff’s been operating in more offensive roles. They should be able to compliment each other enough, especially as a foil for our attacking midfielders in Gomes and Pogba, or for new aqusitions such as Lo Celso or Fernandes.

What makes you think we’re going to spend big? I’m not so certain - plus good players need to want to join....

Wijnaldum looks good because of Klopp's system. If we were to sign him he would look just like Fred does for us. I don't think OGS has any system in mind and thats the main problem. The transfer approach seems to be trying to sign British players and not those who fit any sort of plan.

Really? Ole, a manager who’s known to admire Klopp and base his teams on a similar approach, wants to sign a guy who’s shown himself to be a quality passer but also works hard and presses well. Does that not add up to you?

If he continues putting in performances like last season then he'll break into England's team before long! Exactly the player England need at the base of midfield keeping the ball and setting the tempo

We are not interested in this guy Longstaff. Some fool wrote this, and the rest of the media went wild.

Everything Scott should be but isn't.....
McTominay is more of a energy player. High pressing and hard working player. Like a Darren Fletcher in his early United career. So Scott will more likely be replacing Herrera, as he did in the latter stage of last season.

This kid, Longstaff, seems to be a “playing midfielder”. Directing play and finding the attacking players with those direct and line breaking balls. In a way that Carrick used to do. My guess is that he’s thought as a replacement for Matic, whom is more of a “breaking-up-opponents-attacking-play” or “protecting-back-four” player. When Chelsea signed Kante they’d found a player that is better than Matic for that type of role. Here it seems like Ole is going for a different kind of player. If he was looking for a direct replacements for Matic, I think a player like Declan Rice would be more likely.

I’m all for this signing, cause it then looks like we’re going towards something different than what we’ve seen during the last couple of seasons.

Totally. I remember we were hoping we would sign Ballack but we ended up with Carrick for £18.6 million. I and likely majority was underwhelmed by the signing and thinking it was overpriced.

With football I have always lived in hope, so if OGS wants him then I’ll back him.

I wouldn't say Rice would be a direct replacemeent for Matic tbh. Matic is more of a ball player whilst Rice is a destroyer type with better mobility. I think Longstaff is closer to Matic in profile personally.
