Sean Longstaff

Tielemans has been hyped up since he was 16 playing in the Jupiler league. After his failure in France he's lucky he's done well in the limited time at Leicester or we wouldn't be having this conversation and he'd be heading back to Belgium or on loan to some obscure club in Europe.
1 and a half meh season with half a season where the whole club was collapsing, and suddenly a young talent is done and should head back to Belgium or some obscure club in Europe? That's ridiculous.

I see there's still some (a lot of) arrogance on here re: Longstaff, people that have never seen him play dismissing him as mediocre etc. Luckily for you lads, you won't be getting near him for £25m. The price mooted in the media is borderline hilarious. He'll be starting for England next summer.
No credible source is claiming we are in for him so relax a small bit. This is one isn’t happening.

If you think Sean Longstaff will improve upon Matic in terms of maintaining possession, circulating the ball and finding attackers from midfield then you’ll be very disappointed if and when we sign him. He’ll get across the ground quicker and bring more (but not lots) of mobility to the table (I’ve already highlighted this as an issue) but he isn’t a better footballer in there. He’s not even in the same conversation on that front.
Matic can possess the greatest passing range in the world, but that doesn't mean a thing when he's utterly incapable of finding space and the positions in order to utilize it. I've been watching Matic use the ball poorly for two years; the credit you give him in this department is massively exaggerated.

Never said he was done. But his brief stint at Leicester has been great for his career after being labelled among the biggest flops in the French league by 'France Football'. I remember some some even saying he was headed on loan to Turkey. The 13 games at Leicester have given him a reprieve with the jury still out IMO.

If he’s United quality and English then what’s with the low price? Surely Newcastle don’t need 25m that badly.

That's the thing, I would have assumed he would go for a lot more than 25m which makes me sceptical of the whole story. It's hard to justify him being that cheap in the current market, even having played as few PL games as he has.

I agree. I dont get why people think we will get him for that fee. I dont get why a journalist would try to put a fee to his name, as it is impossible to guess.

We won't be getting him for anywhere near £25m according to our resident Newcastle fan.

England have moody CM so it's no drama to be honest. Still a bit of a reach though

What's funny? If he's partially fulfills his potential as a DLP then what he says has a good chance of happening. We've been missing one for a while. We'd have laughed at the idea of Rice being played in that position this time last year.

Wijnaldum looks good because of Klopp's system. If we were to sign him he would look just like Fred does for us. I don't think OGS has any system in mind and thats the main problem. The transfer approach seems to be trying to sign British players and not those who fit any sort of plan.

How exactly do you know they don’t fit some sort of plan? We’ve signed 1 player who can play on the right wing. Everything else is speculation, from which you’ve assumed they’re random players and there’s no plan in place?

He’ll be playing alongside Shelvey and infront of Lascelles if Newcastle supporters and their view of their players is anything to go by.

I’m still waiting for Ayoze Pérez to get his multi million pound move to a Champions League club and take the division by storm.

Wijnaldum has a CL winner's medal, so it's not unprecendented for a standout, technically gifted Newcastle midfielder to make it.

I'm a fan of his, to be honest. I'm not saying he would definitely make the step up, but I think he'd be worth a gamble for some clubs.

You haven’t really understood my point.

My point was that the view of Newcastle supporters regarding their better players is almost always inflated, in part due to their admirable pride and optimism.

Could include Milner as well

One with no technical ability whatsoever got a runners up medal too :D

Think Juve have that deal done tbf.
Yeah I am kind of messing about to be honest. I know that he will not play here in a million years and will be lined up as the new Pirlo at either Juve or AC. I am content with longstaff so long as it doesn't prevent us getting another CM on top of Fernandes. I would not be happy with just longstaff and Fernandes though. Herrera going, Matic must be axed and Pogba may be leaving. That's our whole midfield

Agreed mate.

I'll be honest, I'm getting slightly worried with each passing day.

Daniel James came for 15m.

This is going to be a stupid question -

but do players like him who have the ability to ping cross field balls with an element of timing actually ever struggle at clubs that find themselves on the top half of a league?

Are there players that play like Longstaff, Carrick, or Neves that are permanently found in some of the lower Leagues - or is it a quite telling ability that is valued by big clubs due to an element of rarity?

I remember I wanted one of will Hughes, ward prowse or Grealish - but after watching Longstaff I realise that this lad plays differently. Are there more like him that have spent their time in the championship due to their inability to step up?

For example Tonali if I'm right played for Serie B but due to the way he plays many clubs knows an element about the players rarity.

I actually like the look of the lad. For 25mil, he could be a steal however he's been injured and no one knows how long it will take for him to recover. Why do Newcastle want to sell him at that cheap price?

Newcastle don't want to sell him for the price made up by the press. I imagine it won't be far off though. Especially if the player wants the move.

I don't think they want to really. Whilst I have heard that he himself has talked about staying at Newcastle before - say if he does want to join us then it's not like Newcastle can ask for a AWB type fee for a lad who played 9 games.

I think anything over 30 mil then we might as well just wait and see if the lad continues to be the player we want him to be. At 25 mil however we directly tell him and Newcastle that we want him now.

Waiting and seeing would only see his value increase if and when he continues to display his talent though. Some of the comments on this thread are horrendous tbf fellas.

He isn't for sale, so unless you pay way over the odds you won't get him. £25m for a top young English prospect isn't even average, let alone over the odds.

He doesn't want to leave, he's said so already.

Talk of him joining you being a some kind of unachievable step up for the lad is surprising, I'm not being funny but our form with him in the side was probably better than any run of form mufc has hit recently.

Apologies to those I didn't answer previously. He's got a good passing range but his composure on the ball is what stands out for me. Watching him with opposition players around him I panic thinking "you're under pressure" "MAN ON" etc and he's just the coolest of heads. That's why he's going to be superb imo. Can't comment on the Matic comparison I was asked about because I haven't watched much of Matic lately being honest.

I will reiterate though that OGS wanting a shrewd acquisition like Longstaff, even if you don't get him, is a good omen. Those criticising this link are an embarrassment imo.

I get what you mean. You either have it or you don't and usually you can tell if someone has footballing talent. That said, when given loads of space Wayne Rooney was able to ping balls about (as claimed by Jose). But generally you would appear to be correct. The ones with the vision and tekkas would expect to get snapped up. BTW Tonali will be in Serie A from next season
