So we're gambling on a player who only started 8 games for Newcastle last season and got injured? Risky. Fine if we think he's squad player material but surely we have enough squad material?

We should be getting players in their mid twenties who are ready to come in and perform in midfield . Mctominay is our project in midfield we don't need another. We are also possibly getting a 21 year old rb as a starter and as it stands our striker is going to be 21 year old Rashford. We also have 21 year old Daniel James, Chong 20 and is it 17 or 18 year old Greenwood in the squad.

Replace them with Cillessen, Longstaff and someone from the academy  Anyone seen my tin hat?
I really dont understand what we are doing here. Transfer strategy should have been something like this split into Tiers

Tier 1
First team RB, CB, CM, RW, ST
Tier 2
Young players for the squad James, Longbottom,

If we end up signing Longstaff I would think Rabiot won’t be coming. Can we still attract top players for footballing reasons without overpaying and turning them into mercenaries?

This is our Summer business really? David James and Neville Longbottom.

I wouldnt have a problem with such signings if we were signing these ontop of what we need. We need at minimum 5 new first team players. RB, CB, CDM, RW, ST

The thing is, it is easy to get impatient and wonder what is going on, but all the players in the world are currently on holiday. So all they can do is agree terms through their agents. But until they have returned from their holidays and had a medical and signed on the bottom line, then nothing concrete is happening for a while. It took 3 weeks to sign James and he was in the country.

There is no strategy as far as I've seen beyond that they should be young and british. I think this approach and window will fail us.

We need top quality players, i.e. 3 or 4 guaranteed starters as a minimum. Lets see where we are in a few weeks but it is looking like James, Maguire, AWB and this fella. I believe that is nowhere near good enough.

Can’t win anything win kids...
Turns out you can if they are Scholes, Giggs, Beckham, Nevilles. Longstaff is relegation fodder quality, but here's to hoping that he's actually top drawer.

writing him off before he even signs (if he does), I see.

Many fans of this club will claim they want young players and develop a team, but then are too spoiled and impatient when the club actually goes that route.

We already have talented young players in our academy. Why not give them a chance instead? The problem many of us see with this strategy is that these players are not at a level to make us challengers next season. We seem to have already become a mid-table club and are signing accordingly.

Get over it, we are not going to challenge for the title next season. Has anyone thought maybe Ole has had a look at Garner in training and thinks he isn't quite ready? Plus we'll be in Europa league where I am sure he'll play.

We need to aim to be challengers in 2/3 years, and the signings should reflect that

There's been no reliable links saying that we're in for this lad yet it's sending people into meltdown. I didn't realise you all believed the Mirror so much

I thought it was the fecking BBC saying this the way some of ye are crying.

It's a longer term project. Which is what we need.

I get the impression that we're looking to build something to go forward with. We're clearly trying to target young, promising players and I'd assume it's with the view that over the next couple of years, we move on a lot who don't fit in that mould and work towards having a more cohesive and 'together' core group.

Our dressing seems a bit cliquey and getting a group of players together who have similar interests, get on, enjoy playing together etc is a good start. We don't seem to have any chemistry or cohesion at all and that's contributed to our problems.

I don't think there's.a magic fix and I'm not trying to be depressing or hyperbolic when I say that I'm not sure we can really do anything transfer wise, that will just launch us to title contenders next year. We're catching up to two teams who have put in time and graft to build a club of players that work towards a particular ethos and style and frankly, I think we're just tok far behind.

We're more than capable of pushing on for third next year and building up to have an exciting team that have grown together. I just don't get the impression that Rashford and Martial, for example, really click. From what I gather, Sancho gets on with the younger, English contingent and you can argue the individual abilities all day long but do I think rashford and Sancho would play better than Sancho and Martial? Yes, I do.

It seems that big signings are a bit wary of us at the moment, understandly. I honestly think if we'd finished third, we'd have signed Sancho this year. If we can start putting the blocks together and get back to the champions league, next summer will be an easier window to push on even further. Move on a few more players, bring in some more quality and start to look like a team that can at least challenge the top 2.

How do you get over it when you see your team that you love just making brainless decisions. And not for the first time. I remember when many fans were happy we had signed Moyes. The same mentality prevails today.

Ok Ok. I’ll take a breath and try to relax now.

Like even the first post on this is Sky. Since that tweet Sky (who aren't even reliable) have gone out of their way to say we haven't even talked to Newcastle of the player's rep's about a move.

we are not challenging next season. The quicker people accept that the better.

It's brainless to think we're going to challenge for the title next season no matter what, doesn't make sense to complain about that. We need to build for the longer term

I'm starting to get worried that this might be true. We'll probably be looking for a new manager by december if we don't invest in the right players for some key areas. What worries me the most is we see rumours of Fred, Matic, Pogba and Lukaku leaving yet we see Young, Smalling and Jones getting new contracts. Ole talks about Rashford as our most important player and we have Martial who is just as good if not better. I know this are all rumours but it is worrying, it might be him wanting only british players or us not being able to attract players due to our season, lack of champions league and a rookie manager.

A midfield of Longstaff - Matic-Mctominay. It's like we are actively trying to be mediocre. I think we have all accepted that superstars won't fix this team but then going on the extreme and going for potential only. At 9 games that's all this kis is, Potential.

What would make you think that is the midfield we would deploy. Is Longstaff the only CM we have been linked with?

Decent enough player, but a Manchester United player after playing only 9 PL games and currently being injured? No thanks.

And again the focus on British players is not for no reason nor are we likely to be the only big British club making this change as the following explains quite well. We will still buy overseas players in this window I am sure but personally I think our approach is smart in the current climate.

Are we signing Maguire and Longstaff for a combined fee of 100m? I don't really like the sound of this...

Rabiot on a free or £25m for Longstaff!

That's assuming he wants to join us in the Europa League and we actually want him because he's had a really poor attitude at PSG. Finally his wage demands could be another factor. Ramsey as a free transfer on huge wages has probably set a horrible precedent.

Our interest in the player has been reported by James Ducker among others so we're definitely interested it seems.

You could bet your bottom dollar that we've been scouting him for a period of time and the reports from the scouts have been very positive i'd say.

He's nothing like McTominay or Fletcher from the 4 matches I saw him play in. He's infact a very cultured footballer with a similar profile to Carrick or even Ruben Neves who is over rated on this forum by alot of members. Longstaff can pass a ball with either peg with good accuracy from what i've seen and can strike a ball with great ferocity. He looks a extremely gifted footballer that could develop into the DLP people have been craving for on this forum since Carrick retired. Alot of you want to see Ruben Neves at United for the same reason and would be happy to see the club part with £70m+ to sign him. Sean Longstaff at £25m could provide that and is a more mobile player to go along with his superb passing /vision.
