Sean Longstaff

Just watched a highlight reel and my first thought was this guy looks and moves like Darren Fletcher. Could be a useful addition at £25m but won’t be significant upgrade we need.

Carrick is the more usual comparison.

Like the look of this lad and would be very happy if we sign him. Got to build for the future.

Jesus mate, I only asked for a scout report...

That really was weird as feck:lol:

Meh. Maybe over the top with this post. But i'm just sick of the attitude from many fans recently what we should only be signing players who are big names or stars on Fifa. Even though that's clearly failed at United and unsexy names have often served us very well in the past.

Its always been a twitter annoyance but theres been a lot of it on Redcafe recently aswell

We don't have a chance in hell of catching city and liverpool next year. Building a team that is ready to compete in 2-3 seasons is exactly what we should be doing

Yes. But Longstaff will reach his full potential in about 5 years and even then he's not going to be the player i'd expect from a MU first XI player.
These signings are great because you need depth but is now really the time to be buying them? If we had an infinite budget I would say yes but we don't.

This fits in with yesterday's reports about Matic not being favored by Ole. I won't mind longstaff at 25m

Why not? Genuine question, whats your issue with him?

I'm not banging the table for Longstaff I have no fecking idea. But the likes of Carrick and Fletcher were never sexy players but they served us damn well

Hard to explain why I find this potential signing interesting. It's based on little but from that little, he sounds and looks like he could develop into a very good midfielder. Maybe I'm just a sucker for these lesser known signings but have a good feeling about this one.
Same here

Maybe it's because I've seen other teams make these kinds of signings, where it looks like they've identified a problem in the team and they found a player with the specific attributes to alleviate the problem. Not caring about their name or where they've come from, just their skillset alone. They end up fitting in really well and their value is suddenly boosted.

Maybe it's simply because it's different than getting an overpriced megastar so that alone makes it exciting.

It’s not the potential signing of the player I’m optimistic about, it’s the transfer policy. We obviously need an established top level centre back and right winger, but the approach in recent years has been an unfocused disaster. At least this looks some way coherent. Should we sign wan bissaka, James, longstaff and or potentially Sancho or Maguire over the next couple of summers, there’s a strategy there that I’m happy to support solskjaer on.

That said, without the essential top level I mentioned, James, longstaff and bissaka resembles an Everton window. These talented players need to be blended with quality to develop as we hope.

Yeah I totally agree with you that there needs to be that right blend of up and coming young talent along with some proven quality, we also shouldn't have this unhealthy obsession with just buying british players when there are European players we can attract despite our current situation.

Oh don't get me wrong. He will definitely serve us well and he's a great player to have in your squad. I just don't see him become a top top player. And there's nothing wrong with that but maybe now is not the time to be buying them.

Genuinely interested to know how many of his 11 PL games people have seen to be so confident about his signing.
Same goes for the pessimists.

I saw him twice last season and he looked a decent player. Only paid attention because the media were bigging him up. Either way hard for any of us to have a huge opinion of him.

I would assume we have scouted him at youth level as well - would highly doubt we are signing him based on just the prem. Who really knows with us at the moment though.

They are nothing alike

Yeah, Mctominay is like a traditional box to box - like a pyshical version of Fletcher.

Longstaff is more simpler, calm and balanced. Have an eye for passes.

Difference is like night and day.

We could do with some long staffs and big balls in that midfield tbh

Been run over way too easily of late.

We already have a Longstaff.. His name is McTominay.
This seems a mistake

Completely different type of player. Longstaff is far more cultured as a player. Bit like saying Herrera was like Matic. Or Fletcher was the same as Carrick.

I've seen Henderson, Milner, Maguire, Carrick etc all widely ridiculed on here as not being MU quality before they went to bigger clubs.

It's impressive that some fans will come on here and state that they are convinced he'll be nothing more than a squad player, after watching a 5 minute YouTube clip of him.

I don't understand how a player nobody's ever heard of, hasn't yet come back from a serious knee injury and has played just 66 first team games in his life can be £25m.

Do you mean Carrick?

He is fine if we buy another 2 midfielders. I think we will only go for two, Longstaff or Rabiot and a more attacking one (Bruno or Lo Celso), but i think we need another one, especially if Pogba goes.

If he had played a full season they'd probably be asking for 50M.

This guy looks great imo. Hope theres something in these rumours

If Pogba leaves, that probably means they are planning to use a 4-2-3-1 formation next season? Then 2 CM additions and another attacking midfielder probably makes enough numbers if Matic doesn't leave.

Matic
Rabiot
McTominay
Fred
Longstaff
Bruno

would be 6 players for 3 positions and then add in Mata or Pereira or both if they manage to stay.

It is even more impressive when people call him the next Carrick based on the same Youtube clip.

to me Longstaff looks like he's going to be a really good player, I think he'll be better than Declan Rice, hopefully this is just paper talk and won't be happening.

yeah, but i think it will be 2. The quality is a bit lacking. Lets say it is Matic, McTominay, Fred, Longstaff and Bruno, that doesnt fill me with confidence. On paper at least.

Not when there's the context of plenty of talk (within the game and among journalists and fans) of his similarities to Carrick.

With Daniel James and Sean Longstaff I’m just concerned we’re just looking at players with the potential to be long-term squad players, rather than looking for players who can actually become World Class.

I am definitely not complaining at looking for younger players but I also hope we are in for players who can be the next Rooney/Ronaldo too and become the best players in the World.

There will be a mix of reasonable unfancied signings and expensive definite quality. We aren't going to only go for 18-25 million pound players. The question is how accurate we are in the assessment of those players.

And to be honest, let's not expect Rooney and Ronaldo level talents. There tend to be only 2-4 of them in world football and bagging them is a huge deal. Sancho for me is the only one I'm convinced to be that sort of talent. Mbappe is obviously not available. But the Dortmund player appears to be young enough to want to take his time there. But yeah I don't disagree that we should going for elite talents/players as well. At the same I also don't think it's cut and dry sometimes.

Please feel free to name these new Rooney Ronaldo players who are available this summer? A club can only buy who is available or who they can do a deal for. Sancho isn’t happening this summer.
I’m hoping we can do a deal with Real for Pogba and pick up one of their better young players as part of the deal.
Longstaff was generally very impressive in his 11 appearances. I’d be happy if we signed him, he could be very good for James and Rashford with his range of passing.

I remember when Real Madrid tried this.. singing Unknown youth crap. Quickly converted back this summer!!

Jack Grealish is 3x the player that Longstaff is. He is Villa Captain at just 23. He has played 184 first team matches. He has played for England U21's 7 times. Spurs are in the process of signing him for 30m. Longstaff at 25m doesn't seem a good deal to me. Would rather sign a big fish in a small pond, than a whatshisface who isn't even in the first team at Newcastle.

I am sensing a lot of people on here wanting Longstaff at £25m, is simply just because he is a signing and it looks close. If I'd asked most of you back in January do you want him for 25m, i suspect there'd have been multiple "no's"

Yeah and the knee injury has not really been brought up here. We do not know how he will recover from that.

Longstaff was touted as one of the high performing midfielders in this league before we were even linked with him. Rightly so, he's got a lot of potential.

Grealish will stay i think.

So he has only 9 games in the premier league? If so, how is £25m cheap? The direction we are going is scary.

Mental, isn’t it? He played 9 premier league games last season.

Literally none of that is true.
