Sean Longstaff

Good player. But anybody that thinks he’s going to come in and improve on Matic is genuinely off their rocker. I’ve seen lots of Longstaff (I’d wager more than just about anybody on this forum, infact) and he isn’t that good.

Are you a Blackpool fan?

Better not be our only midfield signing. Do Newcastle fans actually rate him?

As far as I'm aware they definitely do. In fact he's quite highly rated generally.

Here's one random article singing his praises, for example:

https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/so...-a-long-stay-at-the-top-of-the-game-1.3810397

For anything around 25m he would appear to be a good buy in and of himself. Whether he's what we need for the forthcoming season is probably a slightly different debate though.

Our big summer window could be 175M spent on James, AWB, Harry Maguire and Sean Longstaff...

If it read Hamez , Maguiro and Longstaffic would that be more pleasing ? (I'm kidding) Other than James all the rest have played at the top level of English football .
I would personally love bruno and De ligt and Mbappe but all these brittish players are very good and very solid, I that is what I think we need .

It could work out sure, but it would feel like some weird joke if we only buy British this summer.

I do think a large part of it is European players are not attracted to this club at the moment.

People talk so much crap on here these days.

Its a player Ole clearly sees a lot of potential in and for once maybe we should buy such a player for 20m instead of waiting two years and playing 80.

Its certainly not an issue people should be losing their shit over. Plus he can't be worse than Fred

Is Neil Warnock our DoF?

Could you imagine.?!

I did read somewhere though that as weve let go of alot of our youth players recently and our core squad of players doesn't have enough British players to keep in line with the the rules, so we have planned to bring in young British up and coming talent to bolster our numbers. How true that is I don't know. I can't be arse to work it out.

Id be happy with Longstaff though. I remember watching him early on this season and thinking, where the hell did this lad come from. I was very impressed with what I saw

Probably a good signing in a period of stability but we can't afford too many of these types at the moment, there has to be balance and I'm seeing a lot of prospects needing games. It's the LvG mistake again

Would take him for 25m

So can somebody tell me whats his playing style is like, is he similar to carrick?

And will a midfield of Longstaff, Le Celso and Pogba have enough legs and defensive ability to hold their own against top teams?

We don't have a chance in hell of catching city and liverpool next year. Building a team that is ready to compete in 2-3 seasons is exactly what we should be doing

Have to say, I was quite impressed with the admittedly little I've seen of this guy.

In fact my main objection to signing him would have been based on an assumption that he was going to cost an awful lot of money. If we're really talking around the 25m mark then it's potentially quite a bargain.

Though I also thought Schneiderlin was a great buy so what do I know?

Genuinely interested to know how many of his 11 PL games people have seen to be so confident about his signing.

Can't say for others but having grown up in the North-East I like to keep an eye on Newcastle and watch their games. He may not have played loads of games yet but he was a player I thought has settled immediately at PL level.

I didn’t even know this lad existed until we were interested. Why should I be excited? Someone convince me.

Did you know who Vidic was before we went in for him? Evra? Ronaldo? Maybe you did, but I hadn't and they were ok in the end

I know very little about Longstaff and have no clue if he will be great or shit in the long term. But chasing big names has done feck all for us in recent years so i'm perfectly open to a different approach.

At some point we have to let a manager build a team in his image. If Ole wants to build his around young players then I will trust him enough to let him try

Seems to be good at switching play, something that might come in handy to get the most out of James, Rashford et al on the counter.

It’s not the potential signing of the player I’m optimistic about, it’s the transfer policy. We obviously need an established top level centre back and right winger, but the approach in recent years has been an unfocused disaster. At least this looks some way coherent. Should we sign wan bissaka, James, longstaff and or potentially Sancho or Maguire over the next couple of summers, there’s a strategy there that I’m happy to support solskjaer on.

That said, without the essential top level I mentioned, James, longstaff and bissaka resembles an Everton window. These talented players need to be blended with quality to develop as we hope.

Might as well sign him now, rather than pay twice as much in a couple of years. If he's no good, we can always sell him on.

This is pretty much my assessment back in Feb. Physically he's imposing and looked to use the ball well also. He's not going to transform our midfield, but he will be a good addition. Quite similar to the James signing.

I think I saw him in maybe five games? He played against the likes of City, Chelsea, Spurs and Wolves so others might have caught him while watching those teams too.

Not enough to accurately rate him really but enough to think it would probably cost someone a lot more than 25m to sign him in this market.

A lot of that might be due to a perhaps unfair prejudice against English players though. I expect them to be cloggers so Longstaff's slightly more cultured style of play probably stood out to me more than it would have if he was from somewhere else.

Or do as we've done with Jones, Smalling, Young and all those other "average at best" players... give them a new contract with a salary that means no other club will touch them

Yes but chucking youngsters in without a stable team with experience does not build a team ready to compete, it undermines the attempt. Also we still desperately need top 4 next season.

If we get rid of some of the deadwood and these lads take their places then fine but that still requires us to sign top players for the first team too. I'm dubious whether that's going to happen.

That's our fault for keep giving them contracts, we could get rid of them if we really wanted to.

When we signed Jones and Smalling they were good young prospects. Ashley Young was always meant to be a good squad player. I'll never understand why we offered him great big contracts when they turned out not to be all that, or were past it.

Jesus mate, I only asked for a scout report...

Hard to explain why I find this potential signing interesting. It's based on little but from that little, he sounds and looks like he could develop into a very good midfielder. Maybe I'm just a sucker for these lesser known signings but have a good feeling about this one.

That really was weird as feck:lol:

Just watched a highlight reel and my first thought was this guy looks and moves like Darren Fletcher. Could be a useful addition at £25m but won’t be significant upgrade we need.
