Defo not a Moyes signing, they always tend not to work too when it has a DoF touch for West Ham.
I don't think this will impact Mctominay. Alvarez is a DM and a replacement for Rice. Mctominay is more an upgrade on Soucek.

I mentioned this in the Amrabat thread (he's not good in the air) and people said it was antiquated thinking. For what it's worth, I think Lindelof and Evans can make up for what we lose from Maguire and Mctominay aerially. We just have to find a way to get one of them on the field when either Varane or Casemiro isn't playing.
Lindelof? In aerial battles? What?

McTominay won't be sold. Fred and Donny will leave and we'll get a CM (looks like Amrabat) to replace them. Mainoo and Eriksen will probably share the minutes for the 6th CM. Bruno, Mount, Casemiro, Amrabat/ New CM, McT, Eriksen/Mainoo. Looks fairly good on paper.
Yep. That looks like the plan. 7 midfielders for 3 spots. Sounds logical especially since one is a rookie.

I'd be comfortable with that. How long is Mainoo out for? Eriksen will probably play the first half of the season and Mainoo the second. McT is a good destroyer, I think he's looked decent when not asked to play defensively, he's relatively cheap, homegrown, and always have a soft spot for Scots. Keep him. Fred needs to go, sad for Donny that it didn't work out, but if we're going to give Sancho another hatful of chances based on pre-season, maybe we give Donny a few more too.

Either way, it looks like Amrabat will have to fight for minutes. £25m for Amrabat [saw it in a dodgy article] sounds like a bargain in this market. If he's being signed to play as a single pivot, or as a CDM, I don't see how he plays alongside Casemiro, or Eriksen for that matter. I could see a Mount - Bruno - Amrabat midfield being pretty tasty, a lot of mobility, freeing up Bruno to get funky, letting Mount getting in shooting range. But honestly no clue how EtH is going to set out his players.

Exactly CDM/6 ; Casemeiro, S Amrabat,
K Mainoo,
CM/Number 8; K Mainoo, S Mctominay, C Ericsen, S Amrabat, M Mount, Bruno,
8/10 hybrid ; Bruno, Mount, Ericson

Seven options because 1/2 will be injured or suspended.

Based on what?
Exactly- he's probably overvalued, if briefings are to be believed, and the most likely buyer is in some disarray regarding their transfer strategy, but we've sold plenty of players who 'could do a job' and with attachments to the club; Scott's 27 and likely doesn't want to be on the bench most weeks if he can help it. ETH just needs to be as ruthless as we know he can be in the right circumstances (and West Ham need to get their act together )

A few people have posted that we might keep him because he is tall. I find this a bad reason but thinking out loud, it may be one reason we are setting the price high - we lack height / aerial ability (occasionally useful off the bench when the kitchen sink is being lobbed at us) and could be that EtH thinks we might as well keep him if we can’t get more than peanuts for him.

Negativity.
I find the apathy regarding players leaving or around the club in general.

“I want this to happen but there’s a chance it won’t so I’m going to tell everyone there’s zero chance something positive may ever happen”

I thought people stopped doing that when they grew up?

If we get a big bid, he’ll leave, if we don’t, he’ll stay. That simple. Still weeks of the transfer window left yet and we know the daftest two weeks are the last two so just watch this space.

We won’t keep a player because he’s tall. We may keep a player because he has certain defensive attributes that are useful in certain situations but Martinez and the gang pretty much cover all bases regardless of height.

I’m not been negative , I’m suggesting he won’t be sold as we need squad players. Zero chance of us losing Fred , Donny , Sabitzer and McTominay while bringing in Mount and possibly Amrabat. McTominay will 100% be at the club next season.

I think 2 of the 3 will leave unless there is no interest. Mount and Mainoo comes in so they need to move on for the club and themselves. Hopefully United learns not giving big fat salary to squad players. That why players are leaving on free or low fee.

We need squad players that’s why
We need squad players better suited to ETH's game, that's why he will ( or at least, Should) move, combined with his age. SAF also needed squad players - didn't stop him selling Phil Neville, or O'Shea or Brown when they got to a certain age and he couldn't offer them first team guarantees and thought it would be more effective to have younger alternatives happy to bide their time.

McT is limited when it comes to a progressive side, as opposed to a scrapping, counter-attacking team: he doesn't have 'big club' nous on the field- his best games have been where he was allowed to play like a cut-price Fletcher (without the same positional intelligence or clean tackling ability) allied with Gibson style striking technique, so Leeds or the Manchester Derby in Ole's last full season. He's much more use to a team like West Ham, and we can sign someone with better technique under pressure and positioning to fill-in for Mount or Case, dependent on the situation.

Edit: alongside also bringing through Mainoo, who can play a similar style with better technique and (hopefully) higher-grade situational awareness and anticipation. Even Hannibal, I think, could fill a similar squad role in 12 months time, hopefully after having ironed out some of his own flaws, cheaper and with with more composure. If not, then we should also look to move him on. No way Guardiola, for instance, would keep a player with Scott's limitations around indefinitely, squad or no squad, even if ETH's style differs in certain respects.

So maybe Nixon wasn’t just BS after all…..

We arent just bringing in Mount and Amrabat we have effectively brought in Mainoo too. So it's Casa and Amrabat (if we push the signing over the line), Mount, Fernandez and Eriksen then we look to have Mainoo floating around the 6 and 8 positions. Then maybe we will play around 8 to 10 tough away matches with a double pivot of Casemiro and Amrabat.

Fred, McTominay and Donny just have to go so that we raise the technical floor of our midfield and we also have to cut our losses on Donny.

We have Mainoo also who seems like he’ll play some part in this season. Donny doesn’t play anyway so we won’t miss him, Fred and McTomminay need replacing and are with Amrabat and Mainoo. Which leaves us with a choice of who will sit on the bench and play a bit part this season, a 27 year old McTomminay or a youth player breaking through into the first team?

I think it’s pretty clear what the plan is.

They could land them both for £60m, probably £52m-ish if they negotiated well enough. If they don’t want that deal and are going to chase Dutch league prospects instead they deserve to get relegated next season.

Think somewhere between £55m - £60m I'd be reasonably happy with. Despite the memes neither are bad players and would likely be the difference between West Ham staying up or going down next season, especially Maguire.

It's not worth mentioning van beek, he's not been of any relevance since joining and no one will notice he's gone.

McTominay, Fred and Sabitzer will effectively be covered by Mount, Amrabat and Mainoo.

McTominay will 100% be sold if an acceptable offer comes in.

Yeah the only defensive attribute he has is heading. Basically because he’s tall and a bit of a unit. He has been chucked on when we’re being dominated in the air. The aerial ability in our team is not covered all that well and beyond Varane and Casemiro we’re potentially vulnerable. I’d rather get rid of McT but he seems to be valued higher by our club than any other club in the world value him (otherwise he’d be sold by now, right?!).

He’s really not very good at anything but he’s tall. Feck it - if it’s not that, it’s an absolute mystery why we don’t release him on a free.

And yet Maguire has constantly showed his ability on the international stage. He just hasn’t been used in the same way.
Yes, agree. He’s been much better for England in set pieces. Never really came off for us. I will say our set piece delivery as a team is middling at best. Maguire, for all of his glaring weaknesses, has always been excellent aerially when defending.
