He should be used as a no 10 version of Fellaini ie when you need a goal.
He scored a few goals, but in general play he's awful, a passenger.
Scoring those goals has made him an even worse midfielder as he has no intention to even try and pass the ball. Just get into the box and try to score. Ultimately, I blame the manager - a 26 player isn't going to change, he is what he is but the manager can't recognise it.
Well you don't get benched when you score two winning goals in previous game. That is understandable, even though everybody knows McT offers nothing outside of goalsGarner couldn't get a game ahead of this guy. Let that sink in. He's one of the most protected footballer at this club and it's evident he is nowhere near good enough. The fact that managers like him tells you how fecking toxic that dressing room is, beacuse it certainly isn't for his ability as a footballer.
Problem is he has to score every single game otherwise his selection is completely pointless. The midfield is wide open. Amrabat, Mainoo or Casemiro in that sitting role will be fighting a lost cause
I mean it’s amateur level tactics from the manager, I’ve never coached a team in my life but can see 100% that the midfield balance is non existent yet he’s trying to persist with it
Sorry to be that guy but some very simple passing stats from our three midfield players today:
Sofyan Amrabat:
Bruno Fernandes:
- Passes Completed: 74
- Completion Percentage: 91.9%
Scott McTominay:
- Passes Completed: 85
- Completion Percentage: 84.7%
All three players played the full match. I'm sorry but it's just criminal. I saw Amrabat getting pelters in the match thread, and I'm not saying he was excellent by any means, but the position he was in was ridiculously tough in no small part because McTominay just does not involve himself in the game enough. I'm really reaching the end of my tether with Ten Hag and the fact that he's stupid enough to persist with McTominay in midfield because "well sometimes he scores" is a big factor in that.
- Passes Completed: 42
- Completion Percentage: 85.7%
The only way I can see him ever actually being useful. He should be used as a no 10 version of Fellaini ie when you need a goal.

Yeah after your post, I was looking at the Mount passing stats for early United matches, and it is the same thing as you said. I mean I knew the gap was always there when defending, but he also had a substantial less amount of passes compared to Bruno and Casemiro. Its more than that though because at the start of the season we had Mount in and McTom wasnt. And it was the same thing, Mount was getting forward from midfield ahead of the ball and quiet because of it. The only difference is that McTom has actually scored goals. So sometimes this season he had an end product, while Mount didnt.
Unfortunately it shows that this is what ETH wants. He wants an extra midfield player getting forward near the attack in front of the ball and picking it up in dangerous areas. We havent figured out how to do that using the GK, defenders and 1 midfielder when that other midfielder gets in front of the ball. The wide players obviously get involved too and we work down the sides. But yeah to most people watching it would be far simpler to have 2 CMs sitting deep and spreading the play from there to the attacking players.
There's two separate things here.McT was shit, but people just need to accept that this is the midfield set up that Ten Hag wants. it was exactly the same when Mount was in the team, only time we have had a midfield pair was when Cas and Eriksen were going well last year.
It is idiotic.

These are the tactics Ten Hag wants. The Mount signing will be his undoing. It came along with these tactics and there is no going back with Ten Hag. At this point, I'm thinking what other managers are doing this tactic, and why don't they have the same problems as us?
At a bottom half club....not United.
Mctominay scoring a few goals is the same as hitting the crack pipe feeling good. Sure, you feel blissful for a few hours but when the high wears off you realize you’re standing butt naked at a traffic junction eating rats out of a trash can.
Ten Hag will sack himself by his continued selection of McTominay in midfield. Goals scored should not mask that and it's not just his poor pass completion but not dropping back and giving the defence the protection it needs.Sorry to be that guy but some very simple passing stats from our three midfield players today:

Yet another good performance, yet another tirade of crap spewed on this thread.
Part of it comes from gimping Bruno in this weird no.8 role where he does more out of possession and in knitting play than McTominay. I have my fair share of complaints about the guy but he’s still our best creative outlet and moving him further from goal doesn’t help.Considering our forwards can't score for sht what choice does Ten Haag have?
