He was good.

But he does have these good games and then follows it up with a series of average ones.

He needs to play more like that every week.

Fantastic. Ball winning was excellent, as well as driving forward after winning it. Kante does that and the commentators won’t stop talking about it for half a season. Granted he’s yet to do that in big games for us.

His lack of passing (forward through the lines) ability really does hurt us, but it’s so rare to find a player who can do everything. There was lots of stories of Carrick and McKenna trying to work on him as a 6, I’m not sure it’s something that’s easily learnt at 24, but even if he can increase that skill a little bit he’s going to be a very useful player.

He has some issues with dealing with bobbling passes, trying to get his feet right when the press is coming, can sometimes be dispossessed. One of the drawbacks of being such a big guy in midfield, those initial trigger movements can be a little slower(One of the reasons why Pogba is such a unique if frustrating talent is just how deft he is at the same size) The other side of that is when he does get it under control and a bit of momentum it is very hard to stop.

His passing can be very good at times, he switches the play from right to left quite well, a developing skill, not as good going the other direction. He needs to work on the disguise and quicker release of the pass, sometimes he overthinks it, allowing space to close. Key is to be braver in showing for the ball deeper, he could definitely work harder in dropping to receive and showing earlier.

Great game.

People acting like only they know the truth about McT. His issue is consistency. If that goes away so will all the criticisms.

It's going to be interesting if we manage to get one or two players who are upgrades on him and Fred.

We should already have those players. However, the powers that be at this club are just not up to it.

Guess we cross our fingers and hope until May since the suits have decided they only want club targets. F-k me if I think they're going to spend the £100m its going to take to get Rice or Bellingham. Dunno why they don't just listen to Ralf and go for some players he recommends.

Yeah I agree. The passing he struggles with is when he picks up the ball from deep and needs to play straight through the middle, Carrick was a master at it in his later years. I’m not really sure he can ever really improve that to a high level, but if we can find a proper structure in the team, it will become far more natural to subconsciously know where players are positioned.

In certain aspects, especially the one you highlight, Carrick may have even been a better passer than Scholes, whipping balls off either foot to the strikers feet.

I would be happy if Scott got to Nicky Butt level passing(a very underrated area of his game)

Don’t understand all the first half criticism. I thought he was pretty solid throughout and grew as the game went on.

Broke the lines with his ball carrying several times and won the ball back often.

Man of the match for me.
I think it lies with firstly him not getting the ball enough (Fred and Bruno) and also that despite him being the no.6, we got cut through way too easily. I don't think he made any errors in particular but his defensive positioning made us easier to play through. I thought he used the ball okay in the first half when he had it though.

What we saw from Scott is basically all he wants; win the ball, pass to Bruno, jog towards corner flag, celebrate with forwards. #guggenheim

So we know he's good at carrying the ball forward, which is enough to convince morons like Michael Owen, but he is not good enough to do anything productive with it when he gets there. He had a good game for him but no matter where on the pitch they were, Fred got to the situation first and offered for the ball more quickly. We were also hopeless on the transitions which was his job tonight.

Under Ferguson he would have gone the way of Tom Cleverly. Decent player, but not at the level we require.

Most of their attacks seemed to bypass the midfield, though. Not sure what he’s supposed to do with balls hit over the top into channels.

His defensive positioning is obviously not top notch, but it seemed like he won almost every battle he had tonight.

Strong performance tonight from McT.
Benefitting, I think, from good coaching and a bit more freedom.
Showing more consistency and contributing well in all areas of the pitch.

He has more bite and passion than anyone else in the team. He is good at carrying the ball and has a good shot. But my God he is just awful at transition. He is actually dangerous. He carries the ball too much. He cant and should never play as a 6. He is a decent 8 though.

Probably the best I've ever seen him play. Didn't put a foot wrong all night long.

Really sad to see him go off in a lot of pain after a performance like that.

I wish him well.

CDM seems a position that really suits him.

He has been our best and most consistent outfield player for some time now. A bad game against Wolves, but otherwise a string of MoM, or near it, performances.

I think he’s been excellent recently. At times he doesn’t quite get the credit he deserves. But his all round game is actually very good and he’s there on merit as it stands. An excellent team player.

Was actually decent today. Did absolutely nothing in the first half. But a really good second half.

Is he a cleverley or Fletcher? Both started out bang average but one matured into a crucial player for us.

People keep saying he has a good game then an average one, but that has been the same for the whole team this season. Funny thing is, whether it's saying much or not, he's been our most consistent outfield player this season.

Regards his performance tonight, felt he really picked it up in the second half. The holding role doesn't suit him because his role becomes very reliant on passing. His much more of an 8, where he can press, use his physicality and strong driving runs to progress up the pitch.

Fingers crossed his injury isn't too bad. We will need him against a physical, well drilled West Ham side.

Such a hot and cold player, but did'n show anything unusual to me, completely lost positionally, really it baffles me how out of place defensively he can be, but showed some grit and drove forward well with the ball, still should be a squad player and only play as a no8 in tougher games as an extra midfielder. he provides zero control and occasional successful dart forward is very rare in the scheme of his whole career.

32 passes in 90 minutes from a midfielder is not good enough when the team has 60% of the ball. As someone said, hard to see some standout quality that McTominay brings so you start him regularly. As a squad option, yes.
he's lost positionally and dynamically off the ball I gave him some praise for some of his surging runs forward but most of the time he's bypassed like nothing and offers himself zero times and he should definitely help to build that protection playing without the ball closing spaces and winning the ball putting us on front foot and than a crucial passing option in the build up. What he's good at is when the game gets scrappy and quick and the ball gets to his area where he can win some 50/50 and take the ball forward, not thinking about anything much. Otherwise when teams are organized well and press the shit out of us, they pass it with such ease around him.

Such a travesty we are still counting on him and Matic as two of our CM/DM options when both are tragic defensively.

Good again today but erratic this season, normally after a good game he is anonymous the next. Needs to find that consistency but yes he’s a decent footballer when he decides to play.
RR high intensity training may help him.

We got cut through because we kept giving the ball away. Case in point Dalot for their key chance. That’s not on Mctominay - he was one of the few first half seemingly aware he wasn’t playing for Brentford!

He's a good player, as is Fred. But neither are the level required to win major trophies with as regular starters. Midfield needs big upgrading in the summer.

Once he gets space to stretch his legs, he’s very difficult to stop. We need midfielders to attack the space when we’re in possession. Still has a lot to improve when we’re without the ball though.

Been by far the best player under Ralf. Needs to have a licence to push on and he can take his game to another level.

The treatment he’s received from some of our fans is nothing short of disgraceful.

I don't agree about the treatment part. You play good, you get praised. You play bad for longer periods, you'll get criticised. It's Manchester United, huge club that has spent hundreds of millions over last decade and never came close to winning anything significant. Fans have every right to be mad imo. They always give their support to the players at Old Trafford, even when there are boos it's mostly directed towards the manager or club owners. So only exaggeration fans maybe make is on social media, insulting some of the players there.

Class. Powerful ball carrying from deep. Built like an ox. Would love Ralf to stay for an extra year and turn him into a complete midfielder.

He’s phenomenal. He’s turning into something quite wicked. Picking up a lot of playing traits from Declan rice. I just wish he could use the outside of his foot like scholes to play around the corner

Him and De Gea were our key players tonight, his driving runs with the ball ended with him laying it off effectively to a United player and he played a crucial role in the 2nd and 3rd goals. The midfield is so disjointed because they are all positionally terrible, but as a box to box he's had a couple of good games recently.

I think he had an excellent game. One of the only players that did well in the first half and very good in the second. I see some people saying that he wasn't good in the first half, but I completely disagree. I think only him, De Gea, and Telles were doing well. McT was the real MoTM. He's one player that is playing better under Rangnick. I thought he was mostly poor under Ole, but he's doing a lot better now.
