Standards - as for the players I quoted those were the last United midfield players we had worthy of being mentioned in the same breathe.

Sad but true.- there are plenty of other midfielders playing for our rivals at present that could make that list, which for your information did include Butt. I wouldn’t put Fletcher on it though - he was mediocre for the majority of his United career too. I also wouldn’t put McQueen on any any centre back list. Great character but too error prone. Scored some great headers though from corners etc something our current centre backs could do with studying YouTube clips of if they have a moment between their ‘training’ sessions.

United should have ‘glamour’ midfield players too by the way. If that’s what your interpretation of top quality is then I’m happy to run with that title. Unfortunately - and I mean that - Mctominay still won’t be on the list whether it be now or in 10 years.

Tell me one player in our first XI who can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with a United legend. (Leaving out Ronaldo, as he's a freak)

We could do it with anyone: Luke Shaw is no Dennid Irwin. Lindelof is no Jaap Stam. Rashford is no Best, etc. By your definition, our standards, throughout every position, have dropped. So why focus solely on Scott McTominay?

Have you made similar comments on other threads? Have you said, in the Cavani thread "Once we had Denis Law. Oh how our standards have dipped!"?

Fletcher was mediocre for the majority of his United career? You mean, for the majority of his 224 matches he was mediocre? So, are you saying that you wouldn't have played in? And in doing so, calling into question the judgement of SAF?

Not even going to mention that Fletcher was struck down by illness when he was entering his prime (26/27).

Cool. I love it when fans think they know better than people who have two statues dedicated to them, outside thr stadiums of two clubs.

Really?

Barring Roy Keane, you only listed the midfielders who hit Hollywood balls. Hate to break it to you, but every football team in the history of time needed an unfashionable midfielder.

Scott is a player that seems to get better and better the longer he is out. It only takes him to play a game before reality sets back in and everyone can see the guy isn't good enough

I think he could become a CB under a new manager.
Yep I think so too. Physically he’s a strong muscular type, has pace to drive the ball forward and reads the game relatively well. It might make sense to save some £ and put him alongside Varane. If ETH does that though is a separate question.

Yeah why not?

From what I've researched, he likes having midfielders step into defense and vice versa.

I like McTominay, he just shouldn't be a natural starter. He should be more rotation.

Arsenal 3:1 Man Utd
I hate this man. An absolute coward. How many passes did he complete in the first half? Five? Sell him to Luton.

I actually thought he started playing some decent passes once Matic came off and he became the deepest midfielder.

Bang average player, though. Should never be a starter

Should be the first player who we will sell but because of academy shield, he will get new contract.
Guy can't control fecking ball. Football player who can't play with his foot. Unbelievable. But he does stupid fouls which shows that "he cares for the club" ...

A couple of nice forward passes and created the chance wasted by bruno

But the way he jogs slowly to show up for the ball when we are building up from the back is annoying and kills our midfield (you can contrast with Mata whose legs are gone but at least make quick runs to show up for the ball)

He also never manages to make a clean tackle from behind. whenever he tries that, its always a foul

Created two chances in the match.

Bruno misses a penalty because of his rabbit run lead-up. But sure, blame McTominay.

There's going to be a lot of angry people when ETH arrives and he embraces McTominay. :)

One day the experiment will end and we’ll actually have a proper midfielder. He’s just such an ordinary player but we are so invested in him it’s just so odd but then so much that happens at this club is.

And fail miserably.

We used to criticize players like Gibson & Cleverley.
But I'd take those two over Scott in his current state. Still believe ETH will keep him though.

Who got pass marks today?

No one that I saw.

Nothing player, absolutely petrified to pass forward.

Calling into question ETH's judgement before he even arrives. Nice.

A very McTominay performance today. Nowhere near the quality we should aspire to but he did well for himself I suppose.

Its frustrating to see how often it looks like he just doesnt want the ball, given hes a midfielder.

He’s just poor and has been all season, and never been good enough since he came into the team. I don’t see need to keep persisting with it, he’s had enough time and no other team in top half would start him as much as we do.

He's the 2nd name on the teem sheet when it concerns our central midfield. 2nd only to Fred, who's just above average himself.

We have alot of work and catching up to do.

Brutal player, can't defend, can't pass, can't attack. Nowhere near good enough, but one of the first teams on the teamsheet. Sums it up. What sort of competent defensive midfielder allows his team to concede 51 goals in 34 games, with the goalkeeper in line to be player of the season, having made the most saves? We could have conceded 60-70 goals on his watch. Where is the protection, is he aware of that concept? Teams just walk through us. You wouldn't mind so much if he was Pirlo on the ball, but that's supposed to be all he's good at.

He'd be more comfortable in the UFC octagon than he is on the football pitch. I used to think he was actually a good ball winner but he isn't, he's just a fouling machine. Headless chicken couldn't describe a player better than it does Mctominay.

He completed 23 passes and had 70% pass success overall.

Elneny who doesn't even stand out in Egypt's midfield completed 62 passes.

He's shit at everything and he purposely tries to hide when he can. Not his fault, just doesn't belong at this level and he probably knows it too hence his routine disappearing act.

He is a true definition of not a ETH player, should be easier to get rid for around £20m amongst the rest of the players we need to sell.

We used to criticize players like Gibson & Cleverley.

He will have to, at least short term. We are losing a lot of players this summer. Which will save some for at least a season.

It's our main problem. Not just Scott obviously but we just don't have the ball enough in the opposition half.

If rumours are true and ten Hag thinks he can make a player out of McTominay then he's failed before he's stepped through the door.

That's absolutely pathetic.
