The goal masked a pretty terrible performance. I think he has only had 2 (admittedly very good) games this season and the rest he has been awful.

He isn't a 6 or an 8. He is an attacking midfielder. But unfortunately he would never deliver the numbers in that position for us that we need. He just can't cut it in CM. Not even close to what's required. A midtable player.

Second time I think he's won MOTM just due to the fact that there was 0 other options. Not his fault like. He wasn't good but neither was anyone else.

I think he went about 20 minutes in the second half without touching the ball. Good for him to score, but he's nowhere near good enough.

Not sure what he and Fred can do defensively when they are constantly being left 3/4/5 against 2 in the middle, especially with them both having the tendency to chase the ball. Clearing lacking a steadying ball player at the base to build off.

Started the game well, scored a good goal and then reverted to normal level. For the majority of the game he and Fred were just headless chickens being totally bypassed. McGinn and Ramsey looked class above and just breezed through Mcfred. There’s no hope for this team until we have moved on from Fred and Mctominay.

Most infuriating thing about Mctominay was summed up in 18th minute, McGinn skipped past him, he made no effort to make amends just pointed for someone else to do it.

Totally anonymous second half god knows what Dion was on about, thought he was good in the first half though to be fair.

It's like I'm watching the Manchester United equivalent of Jay Spearing and Jonjo Shevely in midfield at the moment.

The issue with McTominay and Fred is that screen the area when receiving the ball and passing the ball. Even though they are shit passers at least they shouldn't be passing it back to the opposition. I remember Wenger was saying a good midfielder looks around 3 times before receiving the ball and these two just have tunnel vision.

His ball striking about is potentially the best in the squad. Couple of good shots and long passes to Rashford out wide. But just like the Burnley game last week, his goal masks what was otherwise another poor performance. He simply can't pass the ball more than 5 yards forward without giving it away. I can't understand how he can make pinpoint 50 yard cross field balls, but pass straight to an opposition player 5 yards from him. He also doesn't know what's going on around him and gets dispossessed by someone he hasn't seen.

At best he's a rotation option, or a forward running, box to bid midfielder in a three man midfield. He can't progress the ball and can't screen the defence.

Y'all ever tried playing him as an attacking midfielder? He isn't someone that excels down the pitch, but can strike a damn ball and is an actual goal threat.

Attacking midfielder that can’t pass/ find a team mate? How about he just sits on the bench?

He was a number 10 for the youth team, but then he got tall, so Mourinho just saw another tree to plant in midfield next to Fellaini and Matic.

McGinn is twice the player he is. And McTominay is currently our best midfielder. How much have the standards dropped in this club?

He was fine tonight. Looked like a threat in attack which is clearly where he is most effective. Left outnumbered in midfield; it has long been established that neither Scott or Fred can control the game from midfield, they are not helped by the formation.

Playing a 4-2-4 is never going to let you control the game, especially when pressing and possession is still all the rage for many teams.

Scored a very nice goal and that does matter, but otherwise was poor. We were overrun in midfield again, which is truly worrisome.

Himself and fred cannot control the MF. They cannot retain the ball and then make the right pass and execute it.

I keep going back to Madrid under Zidane with Casimiro, Kroos and Modric. Just utter domination in the middle where the retain the ball. Thus have control of the MF.

We dont have that because of MF is probably the weakest part of our team.

He was ok, a few nice passes to the wings in the first half and obviously the goal. We desperately need someone in his position that doesn't get skipped past multiple times a game though.

He is potentially a better ball striker than Ronnie or Bruno....is that what you are saying?

Well done? MOTM? Was I watching a completely different game? The midfield got ripped a new one, they constantly got in behind him, he misplaced a multitude of passes both short and long, just a laughable amount of errors and lack of awareness as usual, and that's worthy of praise and MOTM? Why, because he scored that goal?
Seething !
Another MotM, and well deserved.

He's a niche player, basically a taller Darren Gibson. Got embarrassed positionally tonight and is just poor in his distribution.

Great striker of a football though, you can see why he was a striker in the youth system.
GIbbo could actually pass the ball. This guy can't.

This forum really is toxic.

Scored the winner with a decent header yet so many critical comments on here. He was United's best player and sure that says as much about how the rest of the team performed as it does about Scott.

Thought he really struggled to turn loose balls into stable possession which come to think of it he's never excelled at, and might be a big problem for him under Rangnick since a major idea with the pressing seems to be to force the ball wide into fullbacks (by playing the wingers as 10s tucking in so the other team's CBs can't advance it up the middle) when they don't just go out to touch, but apparently Ralf likes him, as all managers do.

McGinn outplayed and outfought him again. The goal and the shots don't mask his lack of control in midfield.

Say what you want about him but he is a fecking trier and he scored today.
Was excellent by any metric

He's not a central midfielder.

The amount of times he refuses to make himself available for a pass is infuriating.

Then when he does, his body positioning receiving the pass at times is criminal.

I'm in full agreement with this.
Even when McT has a good game, the comments in this thread are borderline nasty.
I was expecting this after his MotM tonight, and the thread delivered again.
Why not dish out some praise for a change?
Well deserved tonight

All those managers that like him have one thing in common, they have been sacked by us for producing god awful football, seems like we’re heading in the same direction again.

McGinn's the better player, which is why he starts over him for Scotland I suppose.
