SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

The Sunak is back in a leading role.

Apparently around 1,400 people die a day in England and Wales which means weekly the numbers are bigger than the overall Covid19 deaths in Italy.

Makes you think.
Hence why not nuking the economy is important in trying to deal with this best we can. COVID-19 ain’t everything.

Fair enough but I don't think this message got through to people. Those people will think "we're in a car and then we're staying well away from others so what's the harm?" I don't see any bad intentions. If this is purely to put people off going out then fine but people need to be given clear instructions on what they can or can't do.
Yes, I'm a distance walker and my initial response was exactly that, it would be ok to travel somewhere isolated by car and start the exercise from there. Unfortunately most people don't go somewhere isolated, they think they do but they actually go to the same well-known places and popular car parking spots, and that's knackered it for the rest of us.
Problem is I live in Saddleworth and can comfortably walk out onto the tops. Am I gonna get perved on by the police?
From what I've seen on facebook the police are targeting car parking areas and cars travelling to them. I've not heard of anyone being challenged whilst walking yet. Enjoy Saddleworth, I can easily walk 10 miles from where I live, but I'd rather be up there with you!

I think impact on county and progress of virus are kind of the same thing but appreciate we’re splitting hairs! Both sets of data are obviously important.

As if right on queue, the Italian government has provided the following today to answer this very question:

First of all, the growth in the number of total cases, rather than the increase in the currently positive ones, because it is the only number that really accounts for increases or decreases in infections. But also the number of deaths, which is the fact that day by day, unfortunately, gives an immediate idea of the progress of the epidemic.

The data (of active cases) a very important fact, due to the limited number of intensive care places in Italian hospitals and the pressure that this type of treatment has on the health system.

Anyway, let's leave it at that.

Begs the question, why are Italy's funeral parlors being overwhelmed when they probably get those type of overall Covid19 death numbers weekly.

They're still also getting all of those other deaths on top of all the Corona deaths. In fact there will be a lot more people dying of things other than the Corona virus than normal, due to the overloaded hospital systems

There's also probably a much stricter protocol they have to follow for Corona deaths due to the high contagious risk, must take up a lot of extra resources.

Another fairly bad day in Italy with 6153 new cases. I'm not sure why but Thursday, Friday and Saturday are always a bad day for these numbers, Saturday in particular. Interesting to see if that translates to other countries and why. People getting together on the previous weekend?

The covid numbers will be on top of any numbers they experience currently btw, it isn't a one or another. If the hospitals are struggling, then it's clear the supply chain for death management will struggle too.

If I were to guess, I'd say that more contact between people happens at the weekend and then they test positive 3-6 days later.

@Dancfc So far in March in Bergamo (the worst hit area) there have been 446 deaths when the average over recent years was 98. Only 136 were officially attributed to the virus.

Just done a 2.5 hour walk with the dog and met maybe five people total. I like this world.

@Revan, I watched all of that "A Closer Look". Very depressing when it's put that way.
It is. The lives of many people kind of defend how Trump is feeling that day and if he is listening to Fauci, or to some random guy in Fox news.

I thought that the initial response in the US was really bad (except banning travelling from China which was a good decision), but on the last 10 days it has responded quite good. But now, the moron in chief seems to want to undo everything at the hope of wishing that the problem goes away.

It is something to say we want to remove some restrictions on Easter, so some people can go to work, while being more careful. But 'I want fully packed churches' is actually mass murder. It is like he is the biggest hater of Christianity, and wants as many Christians to die.

Yeh it's really nice, especially with weather like this! There were definitely people driving out to car parks around here for walks but it is still relatively quiet.

I was out on Monday, the last day pre-'lockdown' and the moors had started to dry, it's surprising how quickly they can at this time of year. Sorry to say it but looking at the weather forecast it will be fire season next! Good luck.

In a fairly unique position of receiving absolutely no help from the government I think.

Only started doing deliveroo recently so not eligible for the self-employed help, currently not employed by my university as the teaching contracts are fixed term and have run out and am a full time student through the PhD so can't apply for universal credit.

Look, we all know that these are difficult times for everyone, we don't need it constantly pushed in our faces by the self appointed experts on here, or those selectively posting the most "bad news" tweets they can find

There are loads of positives coming out of this, if people on here are too wrapped up in their conspiracy theories to see them then that's their problem

People are looking out for each other more, especially the old and vunerable
People volunteering more
People connecting more with their families through being together or home schooling
People realising that money is not the be all and end all
People realising what is really important
People realising that the people whose jobs are really important are actually those in food production, logistics, delivery, the care system and, of course, the NHS - often those who are paid the least
People seeing the benefits of socialism rather than capitalism and greed
Benefits for the environment
More awareness of mental health
People out exercising or walking as families that would never normally do so
The acceleration of a move towards remote working and the flexibility that this brings
The time to reflect or read or whatever

I want what this guy’s having.

If where i live is anything to go by you'll be about to have your best month ever.

It is unbelievable how quickly everything is drying up. it's dust bowl territory in places. We've had one small fire over towards Marsden so far...there seems to be some sort of species of flammable heather on these moors.

So in June us self employed people get a payment of 80% of our monthly wage (under £2500) for how many months.

I'm not really understanding what's just been announced.

I'd also like to know why you can't buy giant feckoff tubs of peanut butter like you get in America? Crappy little servings here.
Define giant feckoff. Does 1kg* count?

We always have a tub of Meridian in the cupboard. Gorgeous. Mind you, it’s “natural” and not full of corn syrup, so probably inedible to a Yank :smirk:

* apparently that’s 2.205 pounds in Brexit measures

3 I think? Will cover April May June. That's it for now, obviously they'll see where we go and what's happening after June

 mate complaining that he's going to be out of pocket because his declared income for the last decade is about 8 grand less than what he actually makes. Actually thought I'd sympathise with him, the thick twat.

So for the last 10 years he has pocketed an extra 80k, but can't afford 6k to live through the next few months  absolute wanker.

Anyone else have their life completely ruined so far? I have to say that all this happened in the worst time possible for me and my family. We'll probably lose everything. :(

I think in June you get the payment, it is 3 months all at once, HMRC contact you if your eligible, you have to earn under £50 k, you can claim it whether you able to continue working or not, it is taxable, and you are eligible still if you claim Tax credits and Universal credit.

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

@VeevaVee I know you'd enjoy this one. :D

It is still crap for carers on zero hour contracts. My wife is on a zero hour contract with abacare but works over 45 hours every week , she is also asthmatic and has COPD and has to stop working because of this, she doesn`t want to mainly as we need the money, she loves her job and worries about the oldies she cares for. She has been told she will only get £94 SSP , shite.

All sounds pretty reasonable. Backing those who have paid into the system and have run their business and declared their income honestly.

So many builders are going to be up shitcreek now though. I guess most under declare but a good amount have paid dick all for their whole lives.

It’s great.

I absolutely love walking around Saddleworth. A little trip up to Pots and Pans would be glorious now.

Id like to get up on Marsden but I fear being shamed by a police drone.
