SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

Trudeau holding his press conference now. He looks shit, sounds gruff and is wearing a wool coat on a sunny day. Totally infected, imo.

Closing the borders to non Canadians and non Permanent Residents.

Americans welcome, though.

Canada has now closed it's borders to non Canadian citizens excluding permanent residents, family members of citizens/PR's and US citizens.

Can’t believe Johnson hasn’t closed the schools I’ve got a 5 year old nephew with type 1 diabetes he’s high risk, this is very irresponsible leadership from the prime minister. Can’t he see he’s putting lives at risk? Or does he care?

You do have the option of taking your child out of school if hes at risk . We all have a responsibility to act on our own initiative as well . I,m not having a go at you by the way . Just because we are not told to do things , does not mean we cant make that choice ourselves. My mum is in an extremely high risk category . From the weekend we decided to not have her out of the house in any public space ie shops . She still cares for her older and infirm sisters so there is an element of risk , though reduced . If he were my child i would not hesitate in taking him out of school .

At the end of the day , every governments advice is for the many , it cannot be tailored for each person.

Hope hes fine by the way.

Exactly it’s madness

If they don’t want people to go out socially to certain places they have to power to close them. Bizarre that they’ve chosen not to do so.

Give it another couple of days and they will close the lot. It’s exactly the same as what happened over the rest of Europe.

I'm not sure if anything optimises this government more than them officially advising that we no longer visit pubs and restaurants while also shying away from closing pubs and restaurants because they'd have to put something in place to help these places survive.

Obviously not the Tories fault if they have to close their doors for good due to lack of trade.

Lombardy had 1367 new cases today, a relatively low number compared to the last week. Lockdown is 7 days old now so hoping this is the start of a trend in the right direction rather than an anomaly.

202 dead as the spike in cases last week translates into deaths.

And a little bit of positivity in the press conference, some areas are beginning to see an easing in patient inflows, and all the equipment ordered when the outbreak started is beginning to arrive.

Can you point me to where you got those figures for Lombardy from? Would be good to see the regional effects to see how the lockdown etc is doing.

Here in Italy in our area at least, everyone seems to be complying. There are very few people around, people are simply staying inside or in their gardens except when they have to go to the grocery shop.

There are far fewer cars around but the post is still getting through, rubbish is still being collected, delivery lorries are still turning up at the shop. I'm still getting Amazon parcels but they leave them at the gate now, which makes sense!

Just to put you a little at ease. As I'm sure you know, severe cases (ending up in death) are a lot lower (at about 0.01%) for children between ages 0 and 9. Although he has diabetes, that number will also include children which have complications such as diabetes. Where the real problem is if you are older than 65 and have diabetes. But if your family is worried about him, they shouldn't take him to school.

What are the chances of US extending their travel ban? I have a flight to San Francisco on May 1. Would rather they cancel it and I get reimbursed by KLM than be left with a choice to go or not to go. It’s still almost 7 weeks so plenty of time but I don’t think it will go away before then (fingers crossed it does though).

I think the measures are deliberately ambiguous to be honest. This week you’ll now have 50 people in a pub instead of 100. Next stage you lock it all down and have 0 people out on the streets. It still makes sense to me

wish they would get Johnson out the way though. Sick of listening to his waffling he’s out of his depth

Would be tempted to just pull him out anyway.

That’s embarrassing,

Yeah, I advised his mother last week to just pull him out of school, we can make something work between us.
The Irish government has closed all schools and pubs for example, I think you are better to be safe than sorry so I just can’t get my head around not closing schools it’s so irresponsible.

Why would you say they are the least prepared country? They are probably the best equipped country to deal with something like this, given their political set up, twinned with the fact that they essentially produce everything in the world.
I just mean that we knew coronavirus was a thing and spreading before there was a single case here. China had tons of cases before they had any time to prepare for it.

Just seen it online and was wondering what you all made of it
Fair enough, what do you think of it? It's the sort of visual logic non-sense you see in propaganda. "This is an apple that's a boy. This is an orange, thats a girl. These two things are not the same. Get it? Here is a nasty rotten banana, this represents transgenders"

The government page updated daily is here.

Here they were out this morning in hazmat suits and trucks spraying the streets China style. Never expected to see that in Italy, or Europe.

Its difficult i know . My mum keeps saying , "yeah i need to do this , pop there , the shop was empty ". she is independant , and stubborn. I told her last night , if she catches this thing , it WILL kill her , no ifs or buts .Sometimes need the hard truth , she cried , she does not feel ready to die yet . I,m glad she did cry , it sunk in , she gets it now . This is a challenging time for everyone , something that most of us have never had to deal with . The economic and personal effects of this will rumble on for years . As it happens , i believe every government is doing the best it can . There are no guarantees any plan will work as yet , every country has different resources and demographics . One thing is for sure though , its going to be a bumpy ride and if everyone does their bit it will help .

In the Italian bulletin they gave (was watching in Whatsapp while talking to my brother there), the number of new cases was under 3k. So, this info might count some from yesterday, dunno.

In any case, it is less than yesterday and that is great.

The first set of numbers they give are new cases minus deaths and recoveries. 3233 is the total new cases.

Why not just move to the next stage rather than risk people(Although a smaller number) getting infected ?

It seem more than anything a deliberately ambiguous plan so no one can hold the government accountable.

The police couldn't manage closing pubs, stopping big social gatherings or specifically allowing for older or more at risk people to Work from Home?
Why do they need to when just encouraging compliance would likely be just as effective? You don’t have to be draconian. People who run these facilities, like pubs, can consider whether there is any exceptional social value to keeping them open to feed isolated and vulnerable people. The overwhelming vast majority of people will make the right decision.

God, that’s terrible you had to make your mum cry but I guess it’s what was needed at the time, I sincerely hope she is going to be okay.
Your right it’s a very scary time if you have loved ones that are high risk.

Baby formula and nappies in my area completely sold out. Bare essentials for little babies and I imagine some King of Cnuts, or Cnut Overlord, or General Feck Head, or Cnuty McCnuterson, or whoever, is trying to sell them all on eBay right now.

People are wankers. Knackered wifey with two newborn bairns stood there gasping because there were no baby wipes. Had some in my boot that I keep as back up so she got those plus an unopened jumbo pack of newborn nappies that I forgot were in there. Only a four pack of wipes but hopefully that keeps her going for a week or so.

The moral of the story is that everyone's a cnut except me because I'm amazing.

For people with infants the uncertainty ahead must be unbearable.
