SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

Excuse my ignorance

But China are saying they’re well past the peak of Coronavirus, and it’s starting to slowly die out there day by day.

So, why are Europe still in “OMG we’re going to get worse over the next few months” mode?

If the country where it originated, the least prepared country and one of the most overcrowded countries has almost killed off the disease in 3 months, why are we all expecting it to be much worse here? We were more prepared and further from the source
China imposed far greater measures as far as I’m aware.

My lab has just started to try to develop a vaccine to Covid based on a previously successful method used against influenza and C. difficile. It’s a long shot, and we haven’t yet got any funding for it but considering it’s an established methodology, it shouldn’t take long until we can test its efficacy in animal models.
I would imagine all laboratories in the world have now turned their microscopes to this in a race against time for funding to find a vaccine.

Because in the end, China had to lock down whole communities with enforcers to get it to stop.

We're talking military on the streets, and officials welding apartment doors shut.

Such measures are unlikely to happen here. And especially not in America where citizens are armed!

Every day I am awaiting Italy data in fear. It will break 4000/400 today, won't it?

Thankfully you were wrong :)

3233 and 349. Cases are down, deaths are down, recoveries are up.

Hope its not a one off.

They have AR-15s , the government has tanks and helicopters.

Can’t believe Johnson hasn’t closed the schools I’ve got a 5 year old nephew with type 1 diabetes he’s high risk, this is very irresponsible leadership from the prime minister. Can’t he see he’s putting lives at risk? Or does he care?

It really will be like the Walking Dead TV show in the US if it gets really bad
A lot of guns and people being antsy, not a good combo.
My main fear is being stuck at home with the family and she's watching the walking dead and talking dead shows. Does my feckin head in.

I'd probably wait until next morning to be sure about today's numbers. Worldometer is being updated continuously.

Putting a lot of faith in the British Public to do the right thing. The same British Public fighting over toilet rolls.
Exactly it’s madness

If they don’t want people to go out socially to certain places they have to power to close them. Bizarre that they’ve chosen not to do so.

Avoid non essential travel & contact with others.
Work from home if you can but oh Schools are open.
Bit contradictory there.

It does sound contradictory, you rather go full throttle or not at all. This virus will keep spreading, so I'm not sure what message they're saying here.

Why would you say they are the least prepared country? They are probably the best equipped country to deal with something like this, given their political set up, twinned with the fact that they essentially produce everything in the world.

I go off the numbers they give in the government press conference. Two regions are missing but they are not badly hit areas.

Oh man. Doesn't make any sense. At the start he says the bucket represents the population who all has the capacity to get sick. At the end he said the bucket will stay full, but it will only stay full if everyone in it gets infected due to not quarantining early. He is just assuming everyone in the bucket needs treatment, that wont happen if you stop the spread. Isolating people is the only possibility to stop the spread. "Slow it down when we really need to"? Infect everyone, then quarantine them? What will that slow down? Nothing, as a lot more people will be sick at the same time, with no treatment available to many. It will kill more vulnerable people than necessary.

On doing the right thing. Probably shouldn't been out for a drink this weekend myself, but it was shocking to see so many blokes going for a piss and leaving without washing their hands.

My workplace hasn’t told us to work from home yet. However we’re meant to stay 2m away from each other (impossible with our desk placement) and avoid the kitchen area etc. Seems to me that it’s more hassle than just trusting people to work from home.

They admitted that the UK was closer in its timeframe to Italy than they initially thought, which explains why they are changing gears so quickly. It's frustrating though how every step of the way, the majority of governments have been behind the curve and playing catch up. They keep repeating how it is a fast moving situation, yet don't seem to learn their lesson from this. Having to give different advice every other day is going to confuse and potentially discourage people from paying attention. Make the strategy clear and simple from the start and change course as sporadically as you can if you want effective public compliance.

Putting trust in the public at large to do the right thing rather than enforce the new rules more actively is a risky decision. Hopefully it will work, however there's a lot of people unfortunately under financial strain to go to work and get that vital paycheck, who will be motivated to ignore this new 14 day household isolation measure.

fecking clowns these guys, so if your a high risk child your fecked basically...

Just seen it online and was wondering what you all made of it
