SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

Got a whatsapp just there saying anyone taking anti inflamatory medication such as difene, neurofen and vimovo should cease taking them. Apparently they exacerabte the virus. Couple of young people with no underlying problems are now in serious condition in hospital.

edit: am i allowed to post that. Apologies if not.

Braved the herds at Tesco today. Sure enough, no pasta, no eggs, no bread. Bah. Didnt think it was possible for me to hate going food shopping even more, but there you go.

The Former and now again current CEO and founder is due to hints not a Trump-Fan.
And the majority owner of the company is a billionaire philantropist who said he would even stay in Germany, if he would have to pay 70/80% taxes, so probably no luck there.

Who is to say that this expert is correct against the experts of other countries who have taken action? Either side could be right which probably means the other side are wrong but also means we are all placing our faith in one man. I’d rather look after my own health and do what I feel is right for me and others around me

The worrying thing is it's not only about the theory being correct, it's about actually being able to walk the tight rope with the timing. The whole thing just doesn't seem feasible to me, with the NHS capacity (as great as the staff are) being what it is.

Well, my girlfriend was contacted by the Austrian embassy today asking her to urgently consider returning to Austria as they think the UK will shortly descend into chaos and they can't guarantee they will be able to extract their citizens when that happens.

Fun times.

Did they actually say "descend into chaos"?

Nothing suggests we are close to that point at all. It'll be because borders will close and restricted movement surely? Especially as UK isn't part of the EU. Surely that's just sensible and still containment.

Sounds like her government are just saying "if you want to come home, come now because we can't guarantee movement to and from countries for much longer"?

We went shopping today too, just for a normal shop tbh, bread was empty in once place we went, easy to grab it at the corner shop though.

It's mad, all this panic buying and it's actually mass crowds in supermarkets spreading it to each other  not the brightest bunch are we.

Of course they didn't say this, people just need to rein themselves in a bit here, the spreading panic will do more harm than the virus if we're not careful.

Well it depends on what chaos is 1300+ infected with it growing everyday and not much testing done. It will go into chaos in most countries

That's the message we got in Ethiopia. But I don't really see the point in leaving. It's easier to isolate here than going home where we'd have to live with family.

EDIT: And going through three different airports and two planes sounds like a great way to get in touch with it.

Yeah, it's becoming difficult for people to just do the weekly shop.

That's what I was getting at, people are literally fantasizing over an epidemic for some reason, like it's cool to be part of it or exciting. It's mental, then you get all the misinformation on social media and people start to panic.

What did it actually say? Could be a standard letter for all foreign nationals in countries that are likely to lock down at some point.

Just had a quick browse on twitter, It's funny watching all the idiots fighting over food shopping.

I feel sorry for old people or disabled people that rely on home shopping as it seems most have had their orders cancelled.

Well the likes of Tesco have no backstock and only London deliveries are distribution centre sourced, the rest pick from stores which themselves are empty already.

I don't think people appreciate that they're hoarding from those actually at need.

According to the BBC:

The Austrian government has sent text messages to its citizens in the UK, saying it is "not convinced" by the UK's anti-virus measures and urging them to return to Austria.

‘Not convinced’ is the polite version. They are more blunt privately.

Thing is, people probably already have enough in their house for a couple weeks anyway, aslong as they plan their meals and don't over eat. People just being ridiculously greedy, there's gonna be a lot of food waste the next couple weeks.

Good. Bizarre story to say the least.

There must be hundreds of millions of undiagnosed flu cases around the world per year.

I've had it twice/thrice in my life and I've never been to the doctor for it.

Lemsip and Night Nurse and home rest ftw.
The flu has less relevance to coronavirus than cats wearing sandals have to the tensile strength of cheese strings.

You're right, this is clearly a very serious situation, but constant sensationalism is not helpful, and it seems to be a handful of posters doing it to the extreme.

We are all worried, but I prefer the more grounded approach, the other option just doesn't help anyone.

860 cases in Austria, with a population of under 9 million.

1400 cases in UK with a population of 66million.

That suggests Austria aren't really doing anything amazing in stopping it either.

It's countries just trying to pretend they're doing better than others when everyone is in the same boat.

Greenland can be smug mind.

Austria is now moving to basically full lockdown and closing borders. Also has plans to instigate conscription for people who took compulsory military service in the last 5 years.

As he says in the thread however, that's due to a lack of testing resources leading to them needing to be targeted.

Even if we had infinte testing resources I am not sure of the benefit of testing. Let me explain why.

If you are asymptomatic and positive, nothing to do for you.
If you are mildly symptomatic and positive, nothing to do for you.
If you are very sick, you go to hospital and get tested to make sure its this and not something else and get supportive treatment.

Yes, but in 3-4 months we'll have 40m people infected and God knows how many dead. They won't.

What about potatoes?

I’m thinking I might need to grab a large bag before I bunker down.

Surely if you are 1 or 2 you self isolate to prevent passing it on to someone who could become sick.

Tell me more about these cats.

I was being tongue in cheek. I wonder how many people like you are going to continue to go out despite the fan being blocked by shit. A question for you, would you go on holiday to northern Italy now? How about Spain? If not, why not?

I wouldn’t travel personally to northern Italy as I doubt I’d be able to with the restrictions. I live in a small village in saddleworth, and for now I’m happy to visit the local pub. That stance may change rapidly though.

Because it's about tracking the virus and preventing spread to others. I'm just on what pretty much every epidemiologist I've read is saying.
