SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

In 2009 we had an outbreak of H1N1 and 59 million of Americans got that and over 12000 died, media didn’t give a feck about it and we had toilet paper, 2020 a few thousand got the coronavirus about 50 died and let’s stop a country and no toilet paper. The bright side of this no lines to buy beer and I can start my spring work around the house since my schools closed for 2 weeks and no football.
Compare the mortality rates, and you will see why each and every country is freaking out.

If mortality rate of coronavirus was also ~0.02% I am sure not many people would give a feck either.

We’re on a community whatsAp group and some person posted a “god will look after us” message as long as we read a particular verse every day. I replied saying she’d do better ripping the pages out of the Bible and using them to wipe her arse. God provided it

Exactly Italy are at about 5% death rate. Only 160,000 have be confirmed worldwide with 6000 deaths this is the problem. Him saying 59 million with 12,000 deaths is nothing to this

Well I'm not going, she's insistent she is for good reason. So to answer your patronising question, yes, and well aware of risk.
I don’t mean to be patronizing but unless it’s a life or death scenario I’d be insistent that she doesn’t go because a) high risk of catching something traveling and b) she gets stuck there if they go on lock down at that end whilst she’s there

FAO microbiologists caftards, how feasible is the development of a SARS-cov2 test that works in the timeframe of minutes ? Compared to previous pathogens..
Not a microbiologist (but I did stay in a holiday inn) but it's doable. Doubt it will be useful though. The current test is nucleic acid based which is far more sensitive than the rapid tests which are protein based. The increased analytical sensitivity means the virus can be detected at lower levels and therefore earlier, decreasing the window period between infection and test positive. The rapid test will be useful when therapies are available.

Am I correct in thinking that countries like Japan and South Korea are generally more germaphobic than we are in the West? You tend to see pictures of people from those countries wearing face masks a lot. I'm wondering if this could contribute to their better control of this virus so far.

Everyone in Korea wears a mask. If you’re wearing a mask and have the virus, it’s harder to pass on to other people which works well when everyone wears a mask. There would be no point in wearing one in countries where people are so reluctant to wear them because it needs to be a large % to be somewhat effective.

Contrarily, barely anyone washes their hands properly here. Even in the midst of the outbreak, when I go to a public toilet, people (with masks on) would just walk out without washing their hands. Some would stop to style their hair in the mirror and then proceed to walk out. Some toilets don’t even have warm water or soap.

Absolutely expected this thoughtful, nuanced and well researched post from yourself, thanks for not disappointing.

If 59,000,000 Americans get coronavirus using current statistics you can expect around 2,183,000 deaths. Enjoy your house work.

I'm blown away by Switzerland and Spain daily figures, they are respectively at 842 and 1362 new cases. If you compare it to mass testers like S. Korea who are at 76 new cases, it's frightening.

Spain - 291 deaths out of 7753 cases. Mortality rate = 3.7%

I have no idea what voodoo they are using in Germany. 9 deaths and 9 critical cases out of 5400. Like whut?

There is a few other factors at play. Different age demographics and also numbers tested etc

They've (The Moroccan foreign ministry) just said that all international flights have been suspended. Hopefully because it's them making the decision, you'll get your money back.
Thank you mate!

This is crazy considering the relative demographics and associated risk

Cheers. Do you wear masks all year round in the cities?

The 9 deaths and critical case are probably just because we are a few days back in the development of the pandemic. Expect these stats to change over the next week

One explanation would be that their general health is better. Or the have had bigger discipline in isolating risk groups.

I'm itching to go to work tomorrow to start my new job because I've been off for 2.5 months. I had some mild symptoms including a bit of a sore throat and temperate yesterday which disappeared this morning and I thought if this develops(which it has not as I feel good after 1 day) I won't be going in.

I feel like we are at that stage where this will start to grow at a crazy rate. We've done nothing to contain this. Apart from the people who have been wfh and exercised caution. I fear people in my family who don't necessarily heed any sort of rationale will take only action until we are in lockdown.

Even then I'd be surprised if people still don't listen.

Eh? On the one hand you're telling your mum and brother to "come home" because you want to be cautious. Then in the next breath you're saying you showed flu symptoms but are considering going into work tomorrow.

I'm pretty relaxed about the whole situation and am continuing with "normal" life (I'm taking precautions such as regular hand sanitizing etc etc) but if I showed even symptoms of a cold I'd be going nowhere near anyone for the foreseeable.

Yeah I know. a few people mentioned to me yesterday.

But...Germans can't be THAT young right? I read somewhere they had the 3rd oldest population in Europe or something.

There is some unknown anomalous protective factor going on.

This is just nonsense simply because you’re comparing endgame figures of one against figures for a virus which is still in relative infancy. The key figure to look at as others have pointed out is mortality rate which clearly and evidentially shows that if the same number of people got this, a significantly larger number of people will die.

Yeah who knows

Then even our government doesn't understand it.
Official line is that our stats will be over time similar to comparable european countries.

Why are you highlighting the bold and ignoring the rest? People are acting as if the government is actively trying to infect people as widely and as quickly as possible. Herd immunity is a by product of the inevitable outcome. Of course the effects that brings about should be taken into account of the strategy.
UK population is 66 millions. To achieve herd immunity we need 60%(according to gov) of the herd to have antibodies. That's 39 millions people.
Even with 10,000+ new cases everyday (which is a lot), you'll need 11 years to reach that number. Does that sound like a feasible plan? Just think about it

Herd immunity is usually achieved through vaccination rather than natural infection.

Everytime I visit this thread, I become convinced I'll be dead in a week

No, the pollution masks are pointless unless sealed correctly. Some people wear them on bad pollution days but that’s about it. Nothing like the mask wearing currently.

Nowadays, you need a mask to go into supermarkets etc but everything is still open for business. I went to see 1917, eat in a bbq restaurant and had a walk in the park today and there were lots of people around.
