Yeah, as a squad player he is fine.
Not sure I want to get my hopes up on this one tbh. It's too good to be true, plucking one of the best defensive talents in Europe this season with his best years in front of him from Barca? I don't see them fecking this up. If they do though, I pray we capitalise on it.
Him and Bailly would be superb but no chance in hell Barca mess that up.
Its not really a case of Barca messing up. If the 9mil net wage demand is true, it's a lot of money especially for a club like Barca that pays Messi a Mil a week and thus needs to manage other players accordingly

Agreed and rightly so. Both players are holding us back. Yes Smalling has played a lot for us and has been reliable this season but he isn't the right profile of centre back that we need to compete with the best teams in Europe. How many top European clubs would be racing to get Smalling/Jones off our hands? None. So why are persisting we with them? He isn't being considered for International football any more which shows his current status. It's harsh but that's the reality. We want to build a team which can compete at the highest level PL and CL and unfortunately I don't see Smalling or Jones as a part of that. I actually rated Smalling when LVG was here and thought he was our best defender but he hasn't kicked on or improved his weaknesses. Jones is no use because he's never fit. If we had to keep one then I'd choose Smalling but only as a squad player. If we can get two centre halfs in then Smalling should be sold
People realise this guy is using us to get pay rise from Barca, no? Move on please. Toby Alderweireld is attainable if we're looking for quick fix for our defense.
There are many good CB options in the summer for a change. Umtiti, Alderweireld, Boateng and Varane are all possible targets. Would be happy with any one of them.

Not if we buy for example Tierney at about 20m instead of Sandro for 60m. Alderweireld and the likes will cost at least 40m, so 52m is not a lot for a top class player, who is still very young.

Than he should fire his agent (brother), he's arguably the best cb in the world he should get paid at the top like VVD, Pique, and Ramos. Next summer bums like Smalling and Jones will get paid more than him.
I prefer paying for Sandro than paying for Umtiti. Sandro will completely transform us imo, defensively and offensively.
You aren't wrong but he'll need to move to earn anyway near Smalling or Jones money. The only way you get to earn the money at Barca or Real 1. Spanish or 2. They sign you for big money in the first place or 3. You are Messi or Ronaldo. Given they signed him for about 20m a couple of years ago, I bet he's on 50 grand a week. I guess he needs to ask himself whether the Barca shirt is worth 3m+ a year even if they double his money he'd probably earn here plus a signing on fee....we all know money talks in modern day football.
@Sassy Colin - it is mildly annoying that the release clause mentioned in OP is €60. You need to multiply that by a million.
Umtiti has arguably been the best CB in Europe this season. He is only 24 so he might not be at his peak yet. Having a left footed CB who is great on the ball is very rare and it can really help when you are playing out of the back. And the guy who it would make sense to replace him with joined Manchester City in January. Losing him would be a much bigger mistake than losing Neymar. If there is even a chance we should go all out to get him.
Why do people always say 'no chance'. Is it to protect themselves from getting excited? Is it because life has treated them so badly that they are now skeptical, maybe even cynical by nature? You cannot say there is no chance in a situation like this where a reasonable release clause exists. I'd say we stand an outside chance of getting him if we want him.

him and Eric would be a hell of a partnership but we have so many CB's. Blind and Smalling need to move on if we sign a new CB. We'd then have Umtiti, Baille, Jones and Rojo. Full back positions need sorting too

I still think we're being used by his agent to help him get a better contract. It's sounds too good to be true. He is arguably the best centre half currently in the world or at least one of the top 3 in his position. Why aren't there any other clubs interested if his release clause is only 50 mill? Only United's name is there. Surely there would be loads of top clubs all over him.
He has several offers according to the Catalan press...
