Sami Khedira

I can't tell what the hell is going on there. It's like it's written as a creative piece to emulate the posting style of Scholesy.

The Mirror are claiming that Phil went to scout him. He's not spectacular, but I'd take him over anyone in our midfield except Carrick at the moment.

With the rumours about Gundogan going to Madrid (granted, it was Marca), and Xabi Alonso's contract up in the air, it'll be interesting to see if Khedira stays at Madrid next summer considering Modric and Illarramendi are there already.

Very good player and an improvement on all our midfielders, bar Carrick, but the £35M fee it seems we are being quoted for is very excessive. I'd rather we pursue other alternatives that possess a bit of flair and creativity from deep seeing as that is something we lack in midfield.

Good player that copped some unfair criticism on here after United were first linked with him. But he isn't a £30+ million player.

Would have been a better buy than Fellaini, though obviously the price we were quoted was ridiculous. Now that we have Fellaini though we really need our next cm signing to be a much more creative player, that's clearly what we're lacking in midfield (along with genuine top quality talent).

A midfield two from Carrick, Cleverley, Khedira and Fellaini would be very ordinary, no matter which way you look at it.

Khedira would improve what we have but so would a host of other players. The "better than what we have now" argument is part of the logic that led some into thinking that signing Fellaini was a good idea. We need players who improve on what we have significantly, that's the challenge.

I'd seriously be worried if Khedira is seen as a serious target. He isn't good enough. He isn't the level of midfielder that we should be spending money on.

He isnt a £20 million+ player

Who is the benchmark for this kind of signing/player as far as prices are concerned?

Gustavo is a similar quality player who didn't break the £20 million barrier.

Khedira would be more suited to the PL than La Liga, I'd say. I think Chelsea will make a move for him eventually.

Why would Madrid sell him? He seems to be starting most games for them at the moment.

Hes fairly good. Better than most of our midfielders but thats not saying a lot. It would only make sense to get him if we hadnt gotten fellaini. But it wouldn't remove the need for a top misfielder or two.

Neither is Fellaini. United not going for Khedira because he's "too expensive" after that deal is disingenuous.

So we should way overpay for every player we sign because we spent too much on Fellaini and Berbatov? Right

Not well. In his 9 league starts and 1 sub appearance he's averaged 1.1 tackles and 1.1 interceptions, predictably not creating much with the ball in the mean time. Thats winning the ball back only slightly more than Anderson... Real Madrid will not miss that level of performance from Khedira if they sell him, Illaramendi and Modric are recovering the ball more often. Obviously you expect significant improvement from Khedira in the future at least in terms of ball winning, but right now he's not up to much

I said it before in another thread, but a lot of the teams around us have spent mid 20s on decent midfielders & all we ended up with was Fellaini. If we'd picked up a couple in that price range, we'd be better off than we are now, I'm sure. As it is, we spunked bundles on this hairly guy.

Is it just me or has Ancelotti used him in a more advanced role? Any time I've seen Madrid this season he's been making a lot of runs into the box, under Mourinho he never crossed the half way line. Interested to see what he can bring in a more forward role.

Reminds me of a very Box to Box player this season, like he has been asked to be more involved at all times... I suppose it makes sense though seeing as Ancelotti doesn't love attacking full backs.

Fellaini has negated any 'need' for him. Well, he hasn't really, but he has probably negated any likelihood we go for him.

I've seen Nemanja Matic rumours resurface today. Now HE is one I'd have take as our 'hardman' over Fellaini, Khedira, Strootman and any other really. Good age, pedigree, and has the footballing ability to go with the physique. Also more mobile than Fellaini.

I don't think his role has changed much. He always looked like a box to box midfielder under Mourinho to me with a few big game exceptions in which he played a more disciplined role. Khedira himself actually said in a press conference for the nationalteam a few weeks back, that he's now playing a more defensive role since Ancelotti took over. Maybe it changed since then, now Madrid is often playing a 3men midfield with Modric, Khedira and one of Illaremendi or Alonso, at the start of the season, it looked more like a normal 4231 with Isco as an AM. That could have changed Khedira's role a bit in recent weeks.

Not sure why people are turning up their nose at Khedira. It was the same with Strootman in the summer and he's looking good for Roma

We're in no position to be turning our noses up to any midfielder. Except Fellaini, when he costs £27 million.

True. And I am not sure why some are saying buying Fellaini has negated any need for Khedira. Phil and Jones and Ryan Giggs are getting games in the middle for us, that seems to be a good reason to buy Khedira

Or we can just use Powell in midfield to give us Powell, Carrick, Cleverley, Fellaini and a new CM better than Khedira. Anderson being not trusted is the reason we play Jones and Giggs. Just replace those two with youth and a top player.

Powell has barely played CM. If he does become a CM it won't be in the next couple of year at least

Weird, if he's really told to play more defensively than usual, then he is very irresponsible player(that's the weird thing, I had him as disciplined player). This season he reminds me of Gerrard when he started playing in central midfield, bombing forward whenever possible and leaving lot of space behind.

His nose for the goal is very good though, but he should improve his finishing, he gets very often in good situation, but somehow misses the target everytime.
