when a player with one decent premier league season can't be bought for £22m from a team like West Brom something is absolutely mashed up.

It's Tottenhams fault for leaving it so late in the window though. You either have to pay a premium or go into the discount bin to buy castoffs.

Yeah how dare West Brom for wanting the best deal for their biggest asset.

when I was your age, Shearer, possibly the best striker in Europe at the time went for £15m. To see a fairly average premier league striker even talked about for £22m is a horrible sight

And how much did milk cost back then? It is called inflation. There is even more money in the game now.

I thought I'd have a look as you asked, but not on milk, but overall inflation.

Overall inflation since 1996 is apparently 71.74%. So the £15m world record would mean an equivalent of £25.7m today. So pretty much you're getting a Berahino instead of the best in the world.

interesting to track the world record transfers
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_football_transfer_record

The Vieri one really set things escalating into the stratosphere, almost 50% higher than the year before with Denilson

Also interesting to see how England monopolised top fees until the early 50s, then it was pretty much a closed shop for Italy, with only Barcelona dipping in for all time greats.
Real Betis stand out as a real anomaly on that list.

But Real Madrid have made the record their own play thing since 2000

Oh yeah transfers these days especially in premier league are totally co-related to inflation.

I was being a bit of a dick to make a point. My general point is there is more money in Football then there was before. Just look at the recent PL tv deal. Because of that sort of money in the game a club like West Brom can really hold out for a big payday for one of their players.

You don't need to talk about inflation to see that 22m for Berahino is a bit ridiculous.

The value you can get for that outside of england is far far higher. FFS, Suarez was bought for such a sum not too long ago. Even Sturridge was half that.

In this age of super-inflation within the Prem, why is £22m for Berahino a bit ridiculous? United paid £27.5m for Fellaini (and that was 2 years ago), £27m for Shaw (1 year ago) and so on.

In any case, the fact is that strikers usually cost more than players in other positions. And signing a player who is already settled in England and adapted to the Prem is generally less of a risk than signing a player from outside England.

22 million would be a bargain for Spurs, especially when United go knocking on Levy's door for Kane or Berahino in a couple of seasons time.

Unfollowed WBA on Twitter lol

The ultimate sign that a player is on his way... When he follows and unfollows a team !

Yeah I would have to agree with this mate! Young English players are overpriced and in the Premier League players are generally overpriced. It's not right but it's the way it is and we just have to accept that.

For 2/3 years we've gotten a lot better at just accepting that we will have to overpay for some players so let's not slip back to the way we used to be.

Funny how people see things differently. I see the Di Maria and even more so the De Bruyne and Otamendi transfers as the market going a bit mad, not something like 22m for Berahino which seems about right. I mean Stones might go for nearly double that.

The KDB deal is madness! That much money for a guy who flopped first time around? And really hasn't been away long enough to build his career back up completely.

Stones for over £35m is also madness. And Sterling for £50m? Is he really double the player Berahino is? I don't think so... In fact I think they are pretty similar. Difference is Berahino scored a lot more goals and was playing for a side nowhere near as good.

More importantly how much has clubs revenues gone up since then? Why sell a player who can earn you mega £ for finishing higher in the league?
Clubs get more money now, so player prices will increase. Too many people get hung up on transfer fees as though they were personally paying!

The problem is if a transfer actually goes well the potential rewards are there for the biggest clubs so the fees only look like increasing. But City are just taking money from a bottomless pit which distorts things a bit. The fees also show how hard it is to move players from other rich CL clubs, or even those just below in the case of the premier league.

Son Heung-Min from B. Leverkusen to Spurs is looking likely, it seems, with their manager confirming that he's had a medical in London ... tho' it's not yet a finalised transfer.

If it happens, I don't think it'll mean that we've abandoned the Berahino pursuit, but I do think it'll put more pressure on WBA to come to a more of a compromise on his valuation. That's unless WBA really would prefer to keep an unhappy player, but perhaps benefit from his goals this season, and then be forced to accept significantly less next summer from Spurs or some other club ... which is entirely their free choice of course.

i like Berahino and i would take him for 15m, thats the price i think Newcastle would sell Ayoze Perez so id rather go for him then give 25+ for Berahino.

How does it feel to have signed a Korean striker to replace Kane? A bit underwhelming no?

Yeah I never understood that.

had to laugh at Sky putting this out last night.

BERAHINO UNFOLLOWS WEST BROM

Read into this what you will... in the last 10 minutes or so Saido Berahino has unfollowed his own club West Brom on Twitter.

Now there's a transfer which has 'guaranteed flop' written all over it.

Not sure why people are laughing at £22m for Berahino, seems a very fair price to me.

Where have people got it in their heads that Son is better than Kane?

Anyway isn't this the Berahino thread?

So far hes not a one season wonder like Kane tbh

So will he actually get signed by Spurs since they're the only club interested now that they are close to Son?
