Sadio Mane | LFC Player

Absolutely not. Mane is a far more complete player. He can play anywhere across the front line and can use either foot. He is simply better in every way than Valencia ever was or could be.

Mane is absolutely not better than valencia was in his prime. What garbage.

Would have him here at present, but valencia was very good at his peak.

Different type of attackers, but I think Mane's last season was as good as some of Valencia's best. Again, I stress they are different players, but he was statistically at a similar sort of level to Valencia's best. Valencia had 4 goals and 13 assists one season, whilst Mane had 10 goals and 3 assists last year.

How many tricks did Nani do? He used to stop dead with the ball then either try to accelerate past the defender or twist and turn to create an opening. I liked Nani, but I wouldn't say he used a lot of trickery in his all round play.

Anderson actually looks more successful than Nani in going past his man.
Although Nani did do tricks every now and then, like most dribblers they gradually find out thAt twisting and turning is far more efficient in getting past your marker. However, it's not just the doing of tricks, it's about improvisation, invention, a piece of magic, something to surprise your opponent, the 'tricky-ness' of a winger. Anderson looks very one dimensional whereas Nani can find his way out in tighter spaces.

1:42 for example shows more invention and improvisation in under pressure than anything I have seen from Flippy Ando.

In his prime Nani created a goal or an assist every game for 50 matches or something, there was a thread about that with Sultan or some other poster keeping tabs on the stats. He could have been so much more...

Nani was statistically excellent. Makes it all the more infuriating with regards to consistency issues.

At least he was consistently inconsistent.

Valencia was horribly one footed, watch him next time he plays, he just wont use his left at all. Its so bad that if he cant go round the outside of a defender then he simply passes it on. He doesnt cut in because he is unable to do anything with the ball if he does. It means he became a one trick pony. Mane is 2 footed, can cross with either foot and causes defenders problems because he is dangerous going outside or cutting in. Mane can play anywhere across the front line because of it. Also he sees passes that Valencia has never been able to do and the weight of Mane's passing is also far better. Not sure why people cant see the differences because they are there for all to see. Some people are just blind I guess. Its not even close.

Is he feck. Valencia's prime was much better.

Totally agree. All Valencia did - even in his prime - was drive at defenders and put them on the back foot. He was a typical right winger and you wouldn't have had him playing anywhere else.

For me a big problem for Valencia was his limited style. Defenders worked him out, backed off or showed him the outside and he became much less effective.

Mane looks a much better footballer from what I've seen. He takes up positions all over the final third, seems to be able to attack from either wide position and cause issues, or run in behind. Valencia never had that. As dangerous as he was he was blatantly much more one dimensional. He was never going to pop up on the left, or through the middle. It's just not his game.

Whether Mane is good enough to cut it at the top level is obviously another question. Looks to have a lot of potential and looks perfectly suited to PL football with his all action style.

Being more well rounded does not always equal better. Chicharito is an example of a player who is not well rounded but, can be effective.

People are praising Valencia in his 'prime', but hasn't he just been found out? I mean the "you know what he was going to do but you could do feck all to stop him" was basically him running really fast on his right along the byline, then sometimes when he was in a ronaldinho mood and felt really cheeky and inventive and magical he would stop so the fullback catches up and... Try to go past him on his right again. He rinses and repeats it until this day. So why did his unstoppable trick not work anymore since he turned 27 or so when he was stronger and faster than ever?

I suspect there was never a 'prime', his success and failures should be measured by a marker in his career timeline: pre and post found out.
Mane has the potential to be better than him.

Im bringing up specifics, you havent brought up anything
Valencia was one of the best wingers in the world from 09-12. Was in the Premier League team of the year in 2009/10. Pep Guardiola called him the best winger in Europe in 2012 - he was voted Manchester United's (the team who came 2nd) player of the year.

Mane was never one of the best wingers in the world. Mane was never in the Premier League team of the year. It would be laughable to ever say he was one of the top wingers in Europe up to now. He was never voted the player of the season in a team that finished near the top of the league.

It's utter, complete bollocks to say is better than Valencia ever was, even if he is better now. Let's not play him up so much, or bring Valencia down so much.

I simply do not rate Mane for a club like us. Maybe Mane can be better than the current incarnation of Valencia but, even if he is that is not a good reason to buy him. Plus I definitely do not think he is the same quality of player Valencia was at Wigan or Valencia was his first three seasons here.

I like how we've already got our lazy pigeon hole comparisons to past players.

Felipe Anderson will be Nani
Mane will be Valencia

We just need to sign Ibrahimovic to be Berbatov and thats our 09/10 post Ronaldo attack re-created.

Agree Valencia was quality I seen him destroy Ashley Young like no player had before!

Mane is exactly what we need bring in Moura too and play Mane as SS and Moura right Martial left and Rooney up top. That combo would terrorise defences.

I think Moura is someone we should take a chance on if available but, really I do not think Mane, Moura, Rooney,Martial would be a huge improvement on the Rooney, Depay, Mata, Martial lineup we have usually been playing.

With Moura Mane and Martial we'd have 3 guys that go past players for fun. Right now we have Martial and the difference when he gets the ball at OT is immense. Everybody is on the edge of their seats as opposed Mata Depay.

Jesus that last video would depress you, even to have some of the excitement Nani brought on his day in our team now would be something else

Imagine in an ideal world if a confident Nani, di Maria, Falcao and Rooney with freedom to express themselves lined up for us today

He had a few bad injuries and hasn't been the same since. You can visibly see he's lost his searing pace, though he's no slouch. He was found out from day one. We knew what he would do and I'm sure his opponent knew too. They still couldn't stop him. Not only was he fast as feck but he was built like a shithouse.

Mane might be good, or even better eventually, but I think the argument is that he's not been until now. It's one thing doing it for Southampton, but Valencia was a huge factor in us winning trophies, won POTY in a good Manchester United team and made Rooney look like a top class lone striker. Let's not downplay that.

His recent game against Chelsea that has helped earn him this massive reputation and is the game people keep referencing as to his quality. How good a performance was it, really?

I'm going to say it now but he reminds me of Bolasie. Some good, some woeful, never looks in complete control. Will be a threat as long as he is confident and plays with intensity, but I'm not convinced he's such a great talent as some suggest. If we sign players like this, we can't replace them a year later. So would we really be satisfied with this for the foreseeable future?

Sadly our predicament requires us to be paying stupid money for such unrefined speedsters if we want to make top 4. Will probably cost north of £30m and there's no chance of his value increasing on that because he simply isn't good enough other than his blistering pace.

It's hard to argue against signing him because we really need another option right now. However I don't think he's going to be the answer for us and imagine he's going to be another Ashley Young for us.

Signing attackers from outside the top 6 hasn't worked out most of the time. When they go from playing every game to being apart of a rotation they seldomly replicate their form. Remember it was just last season where everyone insisted Berahino had all the tools and was destined for better. Look at him now. And you can go through every season and find similar examples.

Can't fully compare due to the fact Mane's only been in England for a couple seasons, but so far Valencia was much better in his prime. Fast, direct, consistent, strong. Was unplayable at times. Doesn't matter than he couldn't use both feet when he was skinning defenders down the right and putting decent crosses in, at a team like United not Southampton.

He wasn't amazing, no, as he definitely lacked skill and finesse - but he was better than Mane at the moment. Mane's only 23/24 though, so he could turn out to be so much better in the near future. Not sure about spending £30m+ plus on him but we'll see.

Tevez, Valencia, Berbatov, Smith, Saha worked out a lot better than many other kinds of attacking signings, such as the big bucks spunked on foreign league players that are expected to instantly tear it up. Buying PL proven has nearly always been pretty good for us. This would Fergie-esque kind of buy.

Any chance of a loan deal? That way we get our option of a RW who can provide some speed and width to our play, but giving us a chance to get someone who has the proper quality for us.(In the Summer)

Southampton fans seem to consider him their best attacking player so... unless he follows up being dropped by posting a pic of himself wiping his ass on the clubs shirt.. then...you'd doubt it.

Is @Stack actually Mane? He suddenly appears whenever somebody doubts Mane's credentials in order to remind us that he receives the ball well and is better than Valencia and Zaha ever could be.
To be fair, he's seen every bloody game of Southampon's this season for Mane. The guy deserves a fecking medal. @Stack Don't leave us

Is he feck. Valencia's prime was much better.
Probably. But he did play in a team that was miles better. And he wasn't ever a top player either. At best he was very good. Mane, given where he is at 23, should get there. His natural tools look to be pretty great. He's rapid just like Valencia but he's got superior technical and goal scoring ability. He's genuinely a good dribbler. But like I said, Valencia was also lucky to play under possibly football's greatest ever manager and all the magnificent players and team's that entailed which always elevates your own form into trophies.

Don't now about that performance but his talent is on a different level to Bolasie. He's genuinely a good dribbler rather than someone who doesn't really know what hes doing. Not exactly in control of things like someone like Hazard, but still one of the better dribblers in the PL.

I'd object to that.
Hehe.

But seriously speaking, I'd take Mane. We anyways would need more than 1 winger and he is really good when on form, is a hard worker, good technically and is rapid. I would also absolutely love for us to go for Sane whenever he is available for a move. In fact just pay whatever is required and get him before other clubs get a sniff like we did with Martial. We are not really going to sign the absolute top class players unless their club wants to sell so the best way for us would be to get the next batch of top talents.

In other words, sign the next messi ;)

I dont see how any united fan at this point in time would want to turn down a proven epl level winger with pace to burn who consistently creates plus always beats his man and has goals in him just because you dont see him world class.........
People would rather delude themselves into thinking that if we turn up our noses at the likes if Mane then suddenly we'll bag the likes of Griezmann, Muller and Bale in one triple swoop. Another pseudo fact being peddled is that we can always get someone better on the continent for half the price but the fact is that a twenty one year old signing from the the continent can find it tough to settle into a team like ours, in this league, whilst we need someone to give us an immediate impact. I think him and Martial could give us the deadly pace we need on the wings which would, hopefully, lead us to creating and scoring more. For a January signing I don't think you can ask for and get anyone better.

2010/ 11 season. 27 games, 14 assists. 5 goals.

All of the crap you've listed may be true, but at his peak valencia was an incredibly effective winger. My point was that at this point, despite all those wonderful attributes you list, old one foot had a better best season, which is what i called you out on.

I guess some people just struggle to read.
