Sékou Koné

I remember reading about that a couple of weeks back. Wonder will it get over the line?

This policy is the way forward. With the way clubs and agents look to rinse us, getting these talents in at this age is just good business.
I don't see why it won't. Just that it will take some time due to the PL process involved. It's the same thing holding up Obi Martin transfer too.

Will he get work permit?

Doesn’t have to meet the criteria necessarily.

The English Football Association has changed its work permit rules, effective as of June 14.

The biggest change to the Governing Body Endorsement criteria is that a new exceptions panel has been created. This offers a route to the Premier League for players that don’t reach the standard points-based criteria.

The exceptions panel rules allow Premier League and Championship clubs to have up to four players who don’t reach the points requirements. It’s not a free-for-all; the Exceptions Panel will only recommend players are granted a GBE if they missed out on the 15 points needed due to exceptional circumstances or if they are a youth player of significant potential and quality.

For some reason I thought the Obi-Martin deal had already been confirmed. Makes sense so.

No leaks until the announcement from Romano & Whitwell, love signings like these. One or two every summer would be great. Maybe he could go on loan to Lausanne.

Am surprised we haven't sent anyone on loan there.

Whitwell saying he's staying with the U21's

I’m like this push to sign young talents, not that we don’t usually but INEOS seem to have put a real emphasis on it. Hopefully we’ll soon start seeing a lot more coming from the South American market, a region I find Utd have been lacking in compared to other clubs.

Disappointed that we are 3 pages in and no one has mentioned that he's not a high volume DLP with expansive passing and that we have wasted our money. Should have bought Adam Wharton instead.

Now that's the business! Now just need to keep clear of Ugarte!

He's gonna be our very own next Zidane, I can feel it in my bones. And trust me, these bones haven't lied since I knew Sir Alex would bench a player just by staring at them. By the time he's done, he’ll have more statues than Bobby Charlton’s got street names. The boy will be sending defenders for a pint at the Trafford Bar before they even know what's hit them. We’re talking 'Zidane with a sprinkle of Cantona', mate, with all the swagger and just a dash of madness

I want to see how his forward pass % compares to Rodri's in a colored diagram

I remember this kid from the u17 world cup, he stood out in every game Mali played.

He was phenomenal against Argentina. He pretty much played then on his own, and absolutely dominated them.

Should be another reason for me to watch the u-21s. Harrison, Amass, Collyer, Wheatley and this guy should be playing regularly one would think.

If only MUTV stop being arseholes and actually telecast those games.

This looks like a Christopher Vivell signing

Who the hell are these guys? All of them are from Mali somehow? Why Mali and not a more successful country like Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Cameroon etc.? I have so many questions.

Feels like the South American market is a bit over-priced at the moment, particularly in Brazil. Africa might be the great untapped region right now. That Mali team had a number of standout performers and Kone's mf partner Makalou was also exceptional (would be nice if we managed to snag him in a 2 for 1 deal).

These are my favourite types of transfers - cost little, a bit of a punt and you could end up with a Pellistri or hit the jackpot with a Solskjaer/Chicharito/Vidic. Hopefully the latter with this kid although he seems very highly rated in comparison to Pellistri.

Any thoughts? Are Mali having some sort of a golden generation moment? Or is this Vivell guy just shady and has a contact at one specific club in Mali?

Everyone needs to calm down with the expectations of him. The guy is 17 and in his first season in English football. I expect a decent Yaya Toure esque season of him, I reckon 10 goals and 15 assists will be a decent return. Next season we can talk Balon Do'r but as of now it's a bit too soon.
Not gonna cut it we need goals in the team. 20 goals atleast.

There's a line of thinking at some of these clubs that do clever recruitment that its more economical to buy the stars from smaller footballing nations instead of the giants to get more bang for your buck. Brighton do it with players from Ecuador and Japan as examples.

All good and well but can someone pull up the comparison chart between him, Rodri and Rice?

Sure but technically ivory coast and Nigeria are "smaller" than England. And they have much more pedigree in terms of generating WC football talent.

What's special about this one Mali club specifically?

They finished 3rd in the u-17 World Cup last year beating Argentina 3-0.

Also, Vivell might have contacts with lot of other clubs in Africa. That tweet might have just mentioned the players he signed from that club specifically.

Pretty much every country is smaller than England but I specifically mean that they're African giants and you'll probably pay a slight premium for their better talents than you might for a player from Mali and Gambia for example.

Red Bull use Freddy Kanoute's management company to source players in Mali so that explains the Malian links but have no idea why specifically Guidars - presume its the centre of excellence that the talented kids know provides a pathway to Europe.

Know nothing about him besides a couple of videos but he clearly looks talented, always exciting to bring youngsters from overseas.

Kid looks ready.. Love these type of signings. Need to be making more of them.

Might be the great untapped region but the timing of the Africa Cup means you are always going to miss those players for a part of a season in the uneven years.

There's all sorts of interconnected programs and partnerships etc.... that go on behind the scenes in youth football.

There's probably been some sort of investment/specific focus on Guidars in the last few years from the Malian FA to develop domestic talent, and so funneled the best youth players to them. It may even be in partnership with some European clubs (the Red Bull connection seems to suggest so).

The result is a bigger than usual group all coming through, or at the very least a group with more eyes on them from European scouts, with the Malian national team hopefully benefiting down the line.
