If I were him I would be reading this feeling a bit used ' hes served his prupose' that one extra title win to wrest it back from City!

On one hand you could feel a bit sorry for him in the way his career went for such a talented player but then really in truly do many footballers care with the lifestyle they have?

That was his first PL title and immediately justified his decision to leave Arsenal. So it worked out perfectly for both parties.

His head is gone, he had one good game for us last season which is amazing when you thought he would have kicked in again with LVG as the manager, he played a great game away to Southampton, it was a complete centre forwards performance and the type of effort he put in in his first season here was on display, the rest of his performances were just limp, lacked motivation and confidence, it is no doubt time for him to move on, it would have been different if SAF was still in charge but things change in football very quickly, I think someone else on here pointed out and it is worth noting, why is he not signing for a bigger club than fenerbahce, nobody else seems to be in for him.

He was superb in that game. I really thought he'd kick on from there. Alas and alack...

Best striker we have had since RvN. All the best to him, a pleasure to have had him at United and seen him live at OT.

I'll miss the guy. I hope there's no hard feelings between the club and RVP. Genuinely thought he'd have a monster of a season LVG, but just didn't seem to click. Hopefully he'll have a lot of glory in Turkey.

Good luck Robin.

Would have worked better if Sir Alex had stayed you'd feel, which I presume RvP wanted, rather than just the 1 title medal, you couldn't blame RvP for being upset on Sir Alex decision, if it's true that SAF told him he planned to stick around for a few years yet when he originally decided to join us,
Is it over the top to speculate that Sir Alex could have lied to him from the begining?

Pretty sure Ferguson said in interviews he decided in about December of the title winning year he was calling it quits, so after van Persie signed.

He also said.. in his book (IIRC?) him having a conversation with his wife post the Aguerrrrooooooooooo goal costing us the league in the last moment, that he couldn't call it quits, there seems some evidence to suggest he knew going into the season after already believing it to be his final bow.
Obviously only he will know the absolute truth of the matter.

"He listened to the little boy inside him when deciding to join Manchester United"

This quote must've have been a dagger through Arsenal fans.

Thanks for #20

Yes, over the top. His wife Cathy's sister died and that is why Fergie chose to retire.

“Things changed when Cathy’s sister died. She’s isolated a lot now and I think I owe her a lot of my own time.''

Im not sure his goal when he joined United was 'win one PL medal though'.

This idea its like a monkey on certain players backs isnt really true, he joined United to win lots of silverware, I suspect go further in the CL and be the focal point of that.

Given one of Arsenals weakest points in the past 2 seasons when they have won 2 trophies has been CF its hypothetical but highly possible they could have won the title with him.

I certainly suspect he leaves United with a sense of disappointment overall with what he achieved, which is a contrast to the supporters who cherish the 20th title for its emotional significance to United.

For a player of his caliber one FA cup and 1 PL is a rather poor return, he unfortunately joined United at the wrong time.

Yeah but come on, we got an unlucky last 16 draw against Real Madrid having won our group with two games to spare and then got a horrible decision which wasn't the reason we lost but dramatically changed things. The next season we got to the quarter finals against Bayern and van Persie got an injury right at the end of the Olympiakos game having scored a hattrick and he ended up missing both legs. We were in the tie until about 15 minutes to go in the second leg so who knows what could have been if he'd been available.

Valid points in themselves, irrelevant though because hes still going to look back on it as a disappointment, maybe even more so because of the way you lost them.

Well I am sure he prefers a PL medal to which he contributed immensly to zero PL medal. And regarding CL, in the end who cares if he reached quarters or semis? He would have been satisfied only with a win, but in his time here we just weren't good enough to win the CL, and neither was any other English club.
His only regret might have been not having joined Juventus, but I am sure a guy who has spent almost a decade in the PL wanted to win the PL rather than Serie A, plus Juventus wouldn't have matched our wages either.

Probably a nothing story. It's unlikely RvP told some random reporter how he felt

Now that he is close to going it is a little sad. He really was brilliant for that one season. Shame that for whatever reason he just couldn't reach those heights again. Will be forever grateful for title #20 though, hope he does well in Turkey.

While I'm mixed on him selling him, moving on I think it's the right decision but short term (this season), I think it's a mistake. I think a lot of fans are taking a very short sighted view on the whole thing. I think much of this is down to RVP and his people. I'm sure van Gaal could use him throughout a season but if RVP wants first team football, he will have to move to get it. It's not always a clubs decision, players have control too.

They quoted a dutch paper. The same paper also said that Van Persie was eager to stay and prove himself again. Apparently he impressed in the double training and was even praised by LvG who then instructed him to train on his own 24 hours later. Knowing Van Gaal i wouldn't be surprised if its true. He did the exact same thing to his own captain Van Bommel at Bayern.

Ruthless, but i sort of get it. If RVP is on his way out then he shouldn't be training with the group ahead of their preparations for the coming season.

If you leave your employer in any industry, you're almost always put on the sidelines and kept away from sensitive information.

No problem with LVG being ruthless if it's true. No offence to them but of course he wanted to stay. Last season however, we were terrible at times. I think Robin is a great player and if we had of got to him sooner, he might have had a great career at United but we're in a process where we have to be efficient. We miss too many chances and I'm sure we'll be better next season

Is it truly likely that LVG & RVP - who have great respect for each other as professionals and as people - would find themselves in such a situation? I don't think so, despite them both being highly-opinionated guys. While it's certainly possible that there is a difference of opinion between them regarding how things have worked out, perhaps too much is made (in the media, that is) of Van Gaal being this cold, autocratic figure; and even Robin, for all his on-field outspokenness, is often a diplomatic person. Though I wouldn't be surprised if RVP is pissed off that he feels obliged to leave United, he's made it clear in recent comments that he is putting himself and his family first (as he should); in short, this coming move looks like his choice rather than Van Gaal's commandment.

Well that's messed up if true

Reminds me of SAF before he mellowed down.

I like it, we're a football team not a retirement home, a clinic or an amusement park for players

Got a point though....Can't wait for Rooney's one month of outstanding form and then the three months that follow, when he can't even control the ball.

It still amazes me to this day
It must be a fitness issue. He's had a poor season, but it will be difficult to find a striker that can match his three best games of last season. It certainly won't be Rooney. I'm sure that if Van Gaal thought he could get back to consistent performances around that level, he would be his first choice striker.

We are the biggest morons selling him. Restructure his contract and sign him for another 2 years. He still has all the qualities to him and he's a way better striker than Rooney.

How would that conversation go, yeah Robin we know you have a contract offering you 4 years @ 240k a week with 10% tax. But we're willing to offer you a reduced contract & renege on our agreement on the last year of your contract. How about 120k a week for 2 years....
As for being "better" than Rooney, that's very open for debate, on last 2 season's Rooney has been the better player in my opinion.
