Why on earth would we continuing paying his wages? It's not a loan like Nani to Sporting, if you're using that as a benchmark.

If we put him on the transfer list, he can ask for the rest of his wage, so we could pay a part of his wage for a year, instead of paying everything now.

Then it'd make far more sense to keep him here. He'd actually be quite useful.

Anyone else really gutted that Robin is leaving?
Me. But I think it's the right decision for the club and for him if he wants to be a guaranteed starter.

I'm more gutted that he didn't make the impact some expected over the past two seasons, rather than the news he's apparently moving on. He was brilliant in SAF's final season, and the one before at Arsenal. But at this point, probably best for player and club to move on.

@Browniee At the time we signed a forward that would have walked in to any first XI in the world, so I'm gutted we only got one really good season out of him even though he was 29 by the time he played for us. As I mentioned earlier in the thread it's not just down to Ferguson leaving but I do think if he hadn't retired he'd have declined less and scored more even though 58 in 105 is still good. Not to be unfortunately, we still got him a league title though. :)

Seems the perfect time.
Worked wonders in his first year, completely vindicating his decision to run the risk of ruining his Arsenal legacy to move here, and gave Fergie a perfect send off.
Still scored at a decent rate when fit under Moyes, in a very difficult season, but last year fell away even further

Good move for all parties.

Agree with you all, it is a good time for him and the club to part ways. But just seems strange that's he's going and also the media coverage has been quiet considering its Robin van Persie.
Our need for a new striker and gone up ten fold.

Gutted. He didn't have any service in the past two seasons. I would have so loved another season from Robin with Di Maria and Depay on the flanks and a proper midfield.

58 goals in 105 games. Not bad at all. Rooney in the same period (104 games, 49 goals) yet people believe he will be the spearhead going forward and RVP is completely past it. Even during the last 2 seasons, 28 in 57 for rvp and 33 in 77 for Rooney. Nothing in it.

I'm not a fan of Rooney and wouldn't care if he was sold tomorrow, but to be fair Rooney will have played a number of those as a midfielder, or behind RvP

I'm not saying you aren't right, but you need to take into this that Rooney haven't played all games as a striker.

And RVP has played games as a striker in a horribly disjointed team alongside permacrock Fallcao with Rooney in midfield offering no service. It swings both ways.

Yeah, I guess my point is that RVP was written off far too quickly on here, when people are clinging onto Rooneys best season over 5 years ago now.

Is anyone else worried that letting RvP go before we replace him is going to weaken our hand in the transfer market? Now other teams might see us as (more) desperate. I really hope United has a replacement ready to go.

We still have Rooney, Chicharito and Wilson, not a desperate situation imo.

Pretty much every team has seen us as 'desperate' for the last couple of seasons. Every could see the state of our squad

You would think we're close or already negotiating for a replacement. Who that is is a mystery :) If we're selling blindly then it's stupid but I just can't see us in this current 'era' doing that. We showed great ambition last summer and you would expect the same again.

He's such a likable chap. I feel kind of sorry for him that he's gone downhill so quickly. He joined us to win things and eventhough he won no.20 with us he must be leaving a little unfulfilled.

Wonder if he holds any resentment towards Fergie.

Thanks for #20... you will never be forgotten for that reason.

unless you and Nani knock us out of the champions league this season

it does feel a particularly low key exit for both him and Nani doesn't it.

With Nani, you start to question your own memory of whether for a couple of seasons he really was our main creative force, or whether we'd imagined it.

Yep, they've just been sold for around the same fee and same coverage 'out the back door' so to speak.
Wonder how we'll look come September 1st

I still remember the first couple games thinking, this guy is a better footballer than I ever expected! Like I knew he was great scorer, but his build up, hold up and technique levels were the best ive seen from a United striker.

Prepare to be dazzled by Nani and RvP. They're obviously world class otherwise we wouldn't have gotten rid of them.

Aside from injuries, why wouldn't we be dazzled by them? They're playing in the feckin' Turkish Süper Lig. That's essentially tantamount to cranking all of your players' stats up to the max value on Football Manager. They'll be great for us.

the sobering part of the Nani one , is that his fee is a couple of million less than one year salary.

how has footy got like this!

Quite. I really took to him when he joined. But it transpires that essentially he wasn't as strong a character as we thought, he clearly never got over Sir Alex's retirement.

After he scored that wonder goal (credited later as an Almunia OG) and got the assist on the brilliant counter attack when we hammered Arsenal 3-1 in January 2010 at the Emirates his form started to really pick up otherwise I think we would have offloaded him the following summer. His form lasted until around the second half of the 2011/12 season so we got around two seasons worth of top level Nani as you say. By the end of that season he was struggling to get in ahead of Valencia and Young and never recovered the following year when we won the title.

That's because our manager preferred hard working mediocrity to Nani's talent. Valencia and Young have gotten game after game even when absolutely rubbish (which is most of the time)

Same here.

Possibly in Young's case (though he was still pretty good in his first year here) but not in Valencia's, he was PoTY and tearing it up at the time. He came back from injury and tore the Wolves defence a new one in that 0-5 performance getting a superb break away goal and three assists and became almost a guaranteed starter. Incredibly he was left out of the starting line up in that crucial game away at City which I thought was a mistake.

The following season when he got the 7 shirt and Young started going through bad form is when he should have got more chances though to be fair he didn't make the most of the ones he got. I remember one particular game against Chelsea I think in the FA Cup replay at their place he was shockingly bad.

People keep bringing up that Rooney is played in midfield, well how many games did he play there? Majority of Rooney's games has been either as a #9, #10 and for a few games just behind Falcao and RvP. I think there was a period of 5- 6 games when he actually played in midfield.

To be fair he played a good chunk of games in midfield as we changed to the diamond with van Gaal trying out Mata or Di Maria behind two forwards but after RvP got injured against Swansea he played almost exclusively as a 9. Apart from Spurs he was pretty mediocre as was his goal return despite the team being in good form and it was left to other players such as Mata, Young and Herrera to step up and score in the big games.

Says alot about how low his confidence in himself is now when he decides to move to Fenerbahce at the age of 32.

Anyone else really gutted that Robin is leaving?

I am, but at the same time this is probably good time to move him. I will always love him for the #20 (all down to him, SAF and Carrick) and for all the hard work and the fantastic plays.
