Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

How would it be minimal? They still need European countries to actually buy their gas. You don't just magic up a market as big as Europe's in a short period of time.
It's not only Russian project. 50% of it is covered by Gazprom and the rest is all on European investors. Halting 20 billion eur project means immediately affecting the rest of investors in Europe. No one needs economic war in these times which is why Putin seems strong in his position.

At the moment it's not operational so the gas is diversified in terms of delivery by Russia as it is.

Cutting them from SWIFT would have immediate effect, but I doubt anyone from the West has the balls to do it unfortunately.

I really don't get why Putin found it necessary to humiliate the head of a Russian intelligence agency. You'd think he doesn't wanna create resentment among the powerful people surrounding him.

Not as extreme obviously, but that bit of theatre reminded me of Saddam’s famous televised purge of the Ba’th Party. And in turn of Stalin.

This is huge if it is definitive. It is gradually gonna destroy Russian's economy.

I don´t know about that to be honest.Isn't russia's economy more dependent on oil than gas ?
In the case of NS2, the effects are probably of a more long-term nature, whereby the gas for Germany comes via the already existing pipeline.

Peskov did what Peskov does best — he had given 20 different answers to the 8 times that he was asked the same question.

Peskov: Russia recognized DNR & LNR in the borders that they themselves declared // CNN: at which point? // Peskov: when they’ve declared their independence // Bloomberg: can you elaborate // Peskov: i don’t have anything to add // Echo Moscow: do those borders include Mariupol? // Peskov: those borders include territories on which those republics currently exist in and were declared independent // EM: which ones, the ones that they exist in now or the ones that they declared originally? // Peskov: both // EM: so, the current ones? // Peskov: I don’t have anything to add // BBC: we didn’t really get that, so which borders — the one that are real at the moment or the ones that they have declared originally? // Peskov: I have nothing to add

Cheers mate :)

I wonder what the normal Russian people think of being sent back to the dark ages of the economy. Again. Is re-taking Ukraine really worth this hassle for them?

The energy dependence from Russia could be curtailed if the French didnt embargoed the Pyrenees pipeline, gas would be delivered to Sines port and then sent to rest of europe through an Iberian pipeline

At the moment it has zero effect really. It has already been on hold couple of times because and Brussels generally doesn't support the pipeline from the off, as it gives huge political power to both Germany and Russia in Europe. Ukraine will never support it as well as the current pipelines are going through the country and if they are overlapped it will mean billions in losses.

Sanctions will hit Russia now if Europe stops buying Russian gas and oil, but this would mean riots in Europe as well, because there's no chance it can import gas/oil from elsewhere with immediate effect or at remotely the same price.

Oh feck, shes going to feck something up again isn't she? :nervous:

I'm not dying in a global nuclear winter because Liz Truss wants to be Maggie 2.0

Think Putin heard the guy in the WH speak, saw what the lot in N10 looked like, and said сейчас или никогда!

Putin met with Azerbaijani leader.

MOSCOW, Feb 22 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russia respected the sovereignty of other ex-Soviet republics and that Moscow had made an exception with Ukraine because he said it was under foreign control, the TASS news agency reported.

Ukraine rejects what it says is a stream of propaganda out of Russia, which has built up forces near the border of its former Soviet neighbour and on Monday recognised two chunks of its territory as independent republics.

BJ acting like a responsible leader for the first time in his life. Putin must fail this time, that's the message.

If they roll into Kiev, there will be strong push for it to happen.

It's got absolutely nothing to do with the will for strong punishment so that's irrelevant.

It's simply a poor choice of weapon and it'll also heavily impact the US and Germany. The WH have already basically said it's not an idea being entertained right now. This isn't like cutting of Iran.

"Right now".

CL final should definitely be moved. It can't be held in a country at war.

I wonder if sanctions can extend to sportspeople and teams as well. Though Russia has already excluded itself anyway with its Olympic doping regime.

This has come at the perfect time for Boris, if the police fine him (which should lead to his resigning) he will just say 'we don't need instability in a time of global crisis'.

What happens to the world cup playoffs, if Ukraine has fallen by then.

Feck me that's intense viewing ... unless they are wonderful actors, that is absolutely chilling. The face on that intelligence guy
