Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

Mastercard have gone too. Struggling to understand if they have gone even further?

Unbelievable!!! Trump in his second term would take US out of NATO, that's what Putin was waiting to invade Ukraine, says John Bolton.

Hardly news. We have discussed this here and I'm pretty sure plenty of other places have mentioned this.

People saying Putin would have invaded Ukraine under Trump are correct. He wouldn't have to because it would have been annexed with Trump's blessing, the solestain that he is.

Let's all remember that it's at least plausible that Trump will get his second term in 2024. All this 'NATO coming together' stuff is great, but Europe needs to prepare for the possibility that the defensive future doesn't include the US.

Sorry, I had missed that before. Delete my post, if needed.

It's more the performance of the cutting edge manpads that have been provided.

To be honest I don't like the celebration we've seen of downing these aircraft. The pilots are somebody's son or husband or father, and about as far removed from Putin's gang as the Ukrainians shooting them down.

And how many sons, husbands, wives, mothers and fathers would they have killed if they weren’t shot down? Sorry, but I have no sympathy for anyone who is part of an army invading a foreign country. It’s not like these pilots are the conscripts that are being forced out into the front lines either. They chose this career and trained in it, knowing what it might entail.

There are no two sides here. If every pilot chose to not be part of this invasion then will Putin order them all to be jailed and executed and then magically make more pilots appear out of nowhere? They are complicit in invading an innocent neighboring country who did nothing. At some point you have to be held accountable for your own actions and not just say you were just following orders.

Yeah, I have some sympathy for the 18 year old Russian lads who are probably regretting the decision to sign up….if they had any choice in it in the first place. But the fighter pilots are seasoned killers, they’re definitely masters of their own destiny

One of the pilots captured today also operated in Syria where he bombed hospitals and civilian targets for Putin/Assad, like he was doing in Ukraine. Like in Mauripol, he probably participated in attacking humanitarian corridors after the Russians promised to let civilians pass. Accidents happen in war, but it's a long-term Russian tactic to ruthlessly bomb civilians, whether it's in Grozny, Syria, or Ukraine. I have very little sympathy for them.

Well...no. They'd have to organise a mutiny all together or it wouldn't work. And they'd also have to be aware that the propaganda they were being fed was completely wrong. I'm not saying they're entirely innocent, nor that I'm not glad the pilots are getting shot down and captured, but I certainly don't think they're all evil. One bad act can be better than another bad act, and furthermore both bad actors can be victims of their bosses / circumstances.

Read half of that letter (not a russian, but can read, very slowly though), and some interesting points there:

Nobody from higher ups said anything about war. FSB were told to analyse all possibilities and ways the war could go. Then when the war broke out, higer ups started going ape shit, that everything didn't go to a T as they had analysed.
Kadirov is really pissed off. Almost started a conflict with the russians. He feels somebody from FSB blew the whistle on his troops, that got annihilated first days in.
Reckon they can't win anymore, there's no plan, just plodding along now. If they somehow get Kiev and remove Zelensky, they don't have anybody to step in and sign a treaty with.
Agrees as most, they won't be able to hold Ukraine even if they took it.
Nobody knows how much they lost, they kept track first 2 days, now it's all over the place. Could be 2, 5 even 10 thousand, thinks it's closer to 10000. Important note: thats without counting LNR and DNR casulties. Troops wandering off by themselves, even commanders don't know whether they died, deserted or got captured.
Their deadline is june. Then economy collapses.
Next week, one of the fronts will start to fall apart. No analytics, nobody knows anything for sure, chaos and instinctive actions.
Trying to scare the west into removing some sanctions.
Will attempt to put on Ukraine, that they secretly were making nuclear weapons.
In addition:

- He thinks that a limited tactical nuke strike is possible.
- But VV Putin won't press the red button to destroy the world, including for selfish reasons (he is scared to stay near his inner circle, be it cause of covid or assassination, so he won't sacrifice himself).
- And even if he wants, there are other people who needs to agree for such a decision.

By suspended operations do they mean all cards can’t be used? Or just new cards won’t be issued?

All cards. If your card was issued in Russia it can't be used for international transactions, but you can still use it internally. If your card was issued outside of Russia, your card can no longer be used to buy goods and services inside Russia.

So Mr average Joe Russians card will still work when he picks up his groceries

A few of tomorrows papers are mentioning that Putin is terminally ill with bowel cancer.

If you were flying over a capital city dropping bombs you’d have to be pretty naive not to think there’s a realistic chance you could be blowing up innocents. It’s a (relatively) indiscriminate way of fighting, there’s no way to be sure of what you’re hitting

Pure scaremongering.

All to sell papers, Trump was suffering from dementia according to all and sundry and turned out to be bollocks.

Did it? He inadvertently admitted he undertook a dementia examination.

I've read the report in the daily star. He's got a puffy face and has been looking angry recently. Death is imminent.

Which papers?

This story has been floating around this evening on twitter.

What I saw, was it was someone's opinion from looking at him on TV and blaming his steroid usage for his ill health, so I wouldn't trust this.

Well he will probably be on the Republican ticket so guessing he is far from ‘curtains’ can’t stand the fecker but sick of these clickbait headlines for clicks and likes.

I follow but try to avoid speaking in politics threads but remember seeing plenty of posts (here included) saying Trump is toast and feck all happens.

Pure scaremongering and playing on peoples fears

No amount of propaganda should override your basic human insight that bombing apartment buildings full of civilians is okay.

"Person man woman camera tv" really sold me on his mental health. Even if he doesn't have dementia, he has multiple mental illnesses that are plain to see.
