Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

Equally there’s people trying to spin this to suit their own agendas against the west.

Things like this bring out the worst in people
Can't disagree with that, it's definitely a grim time

In Putin's speech he referred to the 1918 treaty and the regions that were part of the old Russian empire.
That was his so called 'reason'.

Its clear this is his big 'push back' to the West.

What the US and the West now have to think about is how get back to 'normalization' of some sort.

Normalization with Putin is something similar to what we have with North Korea.

Russia is already now starting to call-up reservists. If a general call-up follows, as rumoured, I wonder how Putin's propaganda will square all this with his pretence to the Russian public of a limited military engagement - and definitely not an "invasion"?

Lies damn lies and statistics as they say.... But for sure the fact that there is some very large countries (by population) it can be said that there is a majority not in favour and a huge majority of non NATO countries not in favour of the UN resolution

This is a valid point and definitely one should account for population rather than just number of countries. One could also account for land mass too though, the countries that voted no or abstained do not occupy more than 50% of the Earth's land mass. Either way on a tangible level, one can say that Russia does not have a lot of friends at the moment.

Oil and gas?
Possibly to come. Have heard more calls in last 24-48 hours for it.

I don’t know enough about the impact on Russia/Putin vs the impact on everyone who currently relies on it. But hopefully the world starts to think quickly about alternatives/alternative suppliers… reduce the vast funds Russia gets and make such invasions difficult to repeat/fund.

Some of the aftermath videos from the last couple of pages are absolutely mental.

Putin's specialty as previously shown in Grozny and Aleppo.

He has one strategy and that is to pound cities into rubble. And he has the nerve to call it liberation.

He also said this
"The federal government is working towards getting rid of gas, coal, and oil from Russia"

But it sounds like a long-term thing...

And he told the population to be more frugal in their energy consumption: "if you want to harm Putin, then you have to save energy."
Yes, understandable, especially coming from Germany, they have a huge dependence.

I don't think it will be possible for the EU to ban imports of Russian gas. A lot of people are calling for it but the same people would beg for it back as soon as they see the outcome.

You guys need to learn to read and stop twisting narratives to suit your needs ! THAT is getting really tiresome. What a cnut!

Edit:

For you to read, here is what the woman wrote in the local newspaper:

...

My grandfather is still alive. He still lives in Moscow, while I have moved to a much safer country. On February 24, we both understood that we would never meet again.

I well remember the impression it made on me as a six-year-old little girl, when my grandfather took me outside the Kremlin for the first time, to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I remember the seriousness of his face, the strong steady hand in mine when he told me about World War II and everyone who had lost their lives in the years 1939-1944.

Grandfather was ten years old when the war broke out. I remember he told me that he was not allowed to go to school during the years of the war. The feeling is still in me from when my grandfather told me - I who was just about to start school.

He lost several of his loved ones in the war. Grandpa's face was heavy and sad when he told about the war. Now Europe is at war again. My grandfather is still alive. He still lives in Moscow, while I have moved to a much safer country.

On February 24, we both understood that we would never meet again.

It is written that Russia has invaded Ukraine. The words are like splinters into the heart. Does the West really not understand that the Russians knew as little about Putin's vicious plans as they did? I called my relatives the day after the war broke out. The panic on the other hand was suffocating.

I asked if they knew anything before it slammed. They shouted from the other side that of course we knew nothing . Nobody knew anything until Putin invaded. Later, there has also been information that even the soldiers did not know where or who to take. I can understand that as a Western, it's almost hard to believe, but I do not just think, I know, how the regime there works. Cruelty, brutality and fear.

There are daily reports of deaths. The number of dead Ukrainians is reported, before mentioning how many Russian soldiers have been killed. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, more than 5,300 Russian soldiers have been killed in Putin's invasion so far. This makes me think back to my grandfather's hand in front of the unknown soldier's grave. These soldiers have a mother, who every day for the rest of her life has to live with an indescribable grief.

Many have children of their own. Children who no longer have a father. I have seen several YouTube clips in recent days, where Russian soldiers meet civilians. They talk civilized together, they openly make fun of each other, as we can jokingly do of the neighbor when we meet each other if, for example, he has not managed his driveway properly. They laugh brotherly together.

Enemies do not talk to each other, they do not laugh together! Ukrainians and Russians are not enemies! They are a brother people! Many wonder why the soldiers do not resist, why more Russians do not protest openly in the streets. They do, you just do not hear their voice. They will be imprisoned indefinitely, they will no longer have a future in Russia and many will lose their lives. On February 25, the Russian regime proposed reintroducing the death penalty.

The Russians are banned from all arenas, planes are stopped, imports of goods are stopped. Russia is being canned. Completely closed to the outside world. Russia's economy is being crushed. This is calculated by Putin. He is willing to sacrifice the future prospects and lives of his own. Millions of people on the Russian side will suffer in the foreseeable future because of Putin's actions.

What does he hope to achieve with this? Yes, he wants you to hate the Russian, he wants you to show your hatred so he can show it on all his propaganda channels then in Russia.

And why, you ask? He wants a growing nationalism. He wants the people to feel oppressed and attacked. This is how his ideology can grow and he can emerge as their only great salvation against the evil they now see from all over the world.

Does this sound familiar?

But Putin will not get his way! Putin has miscalculated. He has no support among his people! The people do not want war.

Ukrainians do not hate Russians and Russians do not hate Ukrainians. Most recently today, I read that Russian soldiers contacted Ukrainians for food. They did not threaten, they prayed. Ukraine's UN ambassador recently read out a text message from a young Russian soldier. The mother asks him where he is. They do not know and think he is on the Crimean peninsula. He replies that he is in Ukraine and that there is no exercise. He did not know he was going to go to war. Sacrificing his life for something he does not believe in. He says he's scared. A few minutes later he loses his life.

Putin makes his people suffer, let's suffer with them. Suffer with them all. All those who do not want war, all those who lose their lives, all mothers, fathers and children who for the rest of their lives must mourn an indescribable loss, both Ukrainians and Russians.

The world is holding its breath. We have never been so close to a third world war as now. Let us never forget the value of a human life! Always let humanism and love defeat hatred.

My identity must remain unknown for the sake of the safety of my own family, but I will continue to write, no one will be allowed to threaten me to silence. This is my war! War for humanity!

I didn't even quote you absolute melt

The sad thing is Britain and American for all their rhetoric about “Putin must lose”couldn’t really be doing more to ensure Ukraine is defeated…whilst walking the tightrope of saying and doing just enough to pacify some listeners. Its never enough to even come close to risking Putin not getting what he wants. Watching the playground bully beat a kid to death but can’t intervene because attention will turn to you. They’ve decided to let putin have Ukraine that’s obvious, they are up against an undefeatable force, even without the 5000 nuclear weapons they have. A line of military vehicles 40km long has been stationary for 3 days and isn’t even under threat of attack front the air. That fact alone says it’s over already. It’s WW3 to our leaders if they shoot at Russians but what the fcuk is it now for anyone Ukraine. Soon it will be the same for other countries. If it was a boxing match the white towel would be getting thrown in by now on their behalf. I mean the white flags are flying around the world already because you can’t beat a nuclear powerhouse.

This is going to escalate to WW3 isn’t it?
Very unlikely. I think it’s becoming more and more clear it will end with East Ukraine falling, getting completely destroyed followed by years of insurgency.

I disagree. I think a regime change is coming. In Russia.

I remember from Syria that “humanitarian corridors” got a really bad reputation among the anti-Assad opposition, who
claimed the regime and Russians basically used them to advance and snuff out resistance. Could be the Ukrainians are somewhat wary.

Thanks. The thing I read hinted at something like that, but didn't give any examples (it was via google translate though, so who knows)

That is another way this may end. They will definitely not have the resources to hold all of Ukraine. Probably not even the West of it for long.

It’s just that WW3 with other countries actively involved is almost impossible at this point.

Based on absolutely nothing from the past 20 years?
The economic crisis has led to uprisings in other countries and regimes have fallen there. The crisis in Russia is about to hit very hard. It is not an insane fantasy to imagine a scenario like that.

He was able to do that in Grozny because no one cared or even really took an interest. He was able to enter the theater in Syria because of Obama failing to act upon his supposed red line. And he is able to do it in Ukraine because, as part of his calculus and rationale for undertaking the current slaughter, he observed that the current POTUS is in his second childhood. Russia, mainly through Lavrov, has been pushing the notion of a post-western/US led order for years now. Now they're making it an observable reality on the ground.

We’re approaching the point where there will have been more refugees coming out of Ukraine in just over a week than there were in the entire year of the 2015 migrant crisis. It’s incredible how the neighbouring countries have coped.

Wtf? I'd love a Russian cat.

"Pspspspspsps come here puss puss."
"Fire can't melt steel beams. Is capitalist conspiracy."
"Should've got another dog ffs."
Trouble is they’re trained, masters of disguise. You wouldn’t know one until it was too late.

Look at this one down our local cat rescue centre. Looks entirely innocent.

I can feel it first hand here in Kraków which has probably taken the largest number of all European cities. It’s going to be okay as long as people keep the same attitude they had for the last week. We already had a big Ukrainian community here even before war, it’s going to increase significantly but I really think they will feel welcomed here.

Apparently around 450k of the 660k that had left until yesterday want to remain in Poland.

Border is still surreal. Went to a different one today, felt even more ridiculous. It’s like a completely different world to what I’m used to.

Saw this story on BBC News tonight… families waiting in Berlin for Ukrainian refugees to offer them a room/home.

Every time you think the worlds going to shit, good people remind you it’s not all bad.
