Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

Exactly why I think all this naive talk of 'it'll never happen'. Some of the same people were saying Putin would never invade earlier this week.
Must admit there’s a part of me that feels the fear of it but the other part is trying to convince me that surely all his commanders and generals wouldn’t accept the world ending that easily. Because that is what essentially launching the nukes seems to be in 2022.

He’s 70, I hope he’s not thinking, “let’s go out with a bang” a really big one.

The nuclear bombs now are probably 100 times more powerful than horoshima and that killed circa 80,000 on impact,
There would be no one to remember that though.

One thing that I'm blown away by, other than the remarkable people of Ukraine, is that after 20 years of trying to destabilise the west, weaken Nato and The EU, distance the US and UK from the rest of Europe, interference in politics and elections, confusing messaging tactics, financial influencing tactics and trying to implement an energy dependency by Putin. Its all been undone in less than 4 days and brought everyone together again. Nato will be stronger after this as will the western unity.

I'm with you 100% on this - it seems like his tactics of creating 'others' for everyone else to become 'compromised' or seem less legitimate, has immediately been wiped out by this action. Because of this, he has now made himself the 'other' for everyone to focus on!

An amazing miscalculation by the looks of it!

Don't hold your breath over these talks. They are likely Putin's attempt to lower the temperature on sanctions momentums and make him appear vaguely rational.

Is there a single person who would be surprised if this deranged lunatic would resort to nukes? I don't think so. His speech from before this invasion even started where he threatened with nuclear war was not taken seriously enough by people.

Never underestimate his insanity.

It's Switzerland, they are neutral so will not get involved as such.
They're not neutral, they're complicit with Russia and are looking to make money when people are dying.

Any country in Europe, except for Putin's vassals, not going against Putin is basically siding with him. Even moreso if they provide the means to ease the pressure on the criminal cabal around Putin by letting them access their ill-gotten gains.

Probably time to start worrying when the oligarchs clear out from London.

On the side Note, i have a kinda morbid curiosity about the end of civilization, maybe comet as in "Don't look up" or probably a nuclear war that blows the ozone, melt the icecap, and tsunamis and wipe the earth clean in hours...

Scarry, but on the same time fascinating, oh well... just my morbid thought

We will never know, if that happens, we won't have much time to discuss about it.

The world will end pretty soon after.

Probably topic for another discussion, but there's a lot of truth in that

The only outcome that is acceptable to me now is a full standing down of the entire Kremlin. Dangers to humanity, all of them.

I don’t think anyone is. But I do estimate those around him, at least a few of them not being okay with launching weapons that will end up resulting in them and everyone they know dying.

Putin is Theon at winterfell at the moment, and we need finchy to knock him out.

We need diplomatic channels to go into overdrive. And by that I mean find who's happy to end this crisis from inside Russia.

Do you guys really believe that he will launch nukes? He is just getting desperate as tomorrow morning the population of his country will wake up to find themselves moneyless. Today's talks will reach nothing. Zelenskyy is not going to acknowledge the independence of Crimea and of eastern areas occupied by separatists. Sanctions will not be lifted anytime soon. Putler has crossed the line.

A side note, but isn't it funny that we used to sort of laugh at the 90s and early 2000s movie and videogame plots where "ultranationalists" took power in Russia and threatened the launch of chemical or nuclear weapons over conflicts with former Soviet republics, and those premises seemed ridiculous?

Technically how could he threaten them even if they refused? A threat of death/going to camp surely wouldn’t work as they would be either dead or living in contaminated world within hours from launch…
