Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

I hate to say it, but they're closing in on Kiev in 24 hours, that's commendable even for Russia

With the West still wondering exactly what they can do now it's happened. Saw a former
German ambassador on Sky News say that the German government now has to rethink it's entire policy and are still in shock it happened

Putin was willing to lose a lot for a "quick" takeover. The more drawn out the worse it would be for him as he would have massive reputational damage amongst his supporters. But equally would make the West look bad if it was drawn out over weeks/months and no intervention or escalation because they'd already done it all with sanctions - so would just be them watching a few untrained Ukranian soldiers having a go with the West's weapons

This is a shit situation. I asked earlier but nobody responded (may have been buried as a lot is happening) but what happens next? Sanctions clearly won't stop Putin, do the West just watch and hope he doesn't go further?

Without wanting to sound ignorant, how is that possible given it’s inactive, plus why would Russia do that to its own soldiers seeing as they have control of it?

Russian shelling hit one of the waste reserves at Chernobyl, which led to the spike.

Apparantley its related to the explosions and the dust on the ground. As another poster said the incease is still seen as minimal

Sorry but Putin knows full well that NATO is never going to invade Russia because they can destroy every NATO country with their nuclear arsenal. He's upset because Russia's former imperial holdings have joined it.
And NATO knew it would upset Putin. And then Putin invaded. Ukrainians are dying and no amount of sanctions will stop it. Quite frankly, it's a disgrace.

We all will have to come to terms that Russia will indeed win the first part of this conflict as it involves conventional warfare. Ukraine's best chance to inflict real damage was always going to be via an effective insurgency.
Yep, but still. Man.

They knew sanctions wouldn't stop him. What it can do is hurt him (and Russians) in the long run. The only thing the West can do is try and convince the Russians to oppose Putin.

NATO as toothless as expected - they're being shown up for what they truly are

How did Russians breach Kyiv already?

They have some rolling military tactics where they take as much ground as possible, reinforce and plough on.

The key is being able to hold and consolidate of course but they will make quick advances due to this tactic.

Eh....? Seriously?
To be honest, I think commendable might have been the wrong word to use as it means to heap praise on someone, and this is not something we should be praising, perhaps that’s why @Ekkie Thump replied the way they did.

but i get what you were trying to say and I’m utterly shocked at how quickly they managed to get to Kyiv too

I'm not sure why people keep bringing this up. Ukraine is not a NATO country, it was to be expected that NATO won't engage military otherwise we're on the verge of WW3...

If NATO had gotten involved over Ukraine you would quite literally not have the luxury of posting moronic comments like that today anymore.

Chernobyl is seeing elevated radiation levels, after Russians took it over yesterday.

Pretty sure the answer was given yesterday? A lot of heavy vehicles meant fine radioactive soil was being kicked up and messing with sensors.

Or he’d be posting why nato got involved after about 10 million deaths of European civilians and total annihilation of most major capital across Europe.
