Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

The official view from Pentagon seems to be that Ukraine had more leverage militarily last winter, and should have pressed for peace talks then.... which seems to imply that that they're LOSING on the ground since then. Congrats to all who waved the Ukraine flag and invoked its people as they attacked and smeared diplomacy.

Of course the Admin is pressing on with fighting Russia until the last Ukrainian

You need to do so much better than "seems to imply" when all the official, unofficial, and osint sources say the exact opposite.

I hope you're joking. What leverage did they have then they don't have how?

You do realize Russia won't stop, and if Ukraine agreed to stop the war that Russia will restart it as soon as they feel ready.

I know because Putin already broke the Minsk Agreements. They already agreed to leave Ukraine alone.

Looks like they're still holding back and wait for the breakthrough.

You seem to be making the assumption the Russians had some intention of negotiating. Not sure it's valid. Or that it would have been a remotely good idea for the Ukrainians to take them up on it.

Negotiate, with Putin, someone who breaks every deal ever?

Yeah, right.

It is hard to imagine how Ukr can trust Putin after all of it.

But negotiation would be the aim to end this war in the favor of UKR? How else can this war end instead realistically unless Putin is dead?

You really do have such a low opinion of Ukrainians, don't you? To you they're just an object to be toyed with by the greater powers, with no free will to act.

Well they'll be hoping to force the Russians to retreat out of Ukraine fully. Whether it's realistic or even possible well time will tell but they want to try and so far they're gradually progressing towards that goal.

Its definitely going to take a lot of time, how long until mud season starts in southern Ukraine, 1 month or so?

They were still fighting in (and liberating) Kherson up to mid-November last year, so hopefully we have at least that long.

Embarrassing for Russia. After this, they'll probably tail every pilot from now on.

They no longer make the Challenger 2 do they? Maybe they should restart production or is there another one in the works or something?

There is a Challenger 3 project. But interestingly it wouldn't mean producing new tanks, but refurbishing the existing Challenger 2 fleet - key point would be replacing the gun, effectively taking this "sniper" ability away from it, by using the 120mm/L55A1 smoothbore gun. Which is the same (but modernized) gun the Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams use. This would effectively bring the British tank fleet to NATO standard and ease cooperation, but it also changes it's abilities a bit.

Perhaps the upgrade ought to be to the Leopard and Abrams...

Russia building modern Flaktürme, following the Nazi blueprint.

In combination with the reappearance of TB2s as offensive weapons I guess it is safe to conclude now that Russia is truly running out of air defense systems. They can't defend both the front and it's own cities.

Is a Pantsir an automated cannon system then?

If anyone thought Erdogan is a friend of the west because he released some Mariupol defenders. He is a piece of shite who plays both sides for his own benefit, he will never change.

"We spit on Western sanctions."
"Let me speak. Otherwise, you will really hear what Russian Grad missiles are capable of."
"Morons" - preceded by an expletive.

In the newly published interview, the pilot also pushed back against Russian misinformation about the invasion of Ukraine.

“The truth is, there are no Nazis or fascists here. It’s a real disgrace what is happening here. Murder, tears, blood. People are simply killing each other. That’s all I can make of this and I don’t want to be a part of it,” he said.

That high-level cases of corruption are coming to light is positive, said Andrii Borovyk, director of Transparency International in Ukraine, rather than an indication of a nation bogged down by insider dealing; it shows that the country can fight the war and graft at the same time, he said.

“Scandals are good,” he said. “The war,” Mr. Borovyk added, “cannot be an excuse to stop fighting corruption.”
