Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

The issue I have with blaming the soldiers: I believe that human beings are blank pages when born. Sure you have a tendency to certain character traits but chances are that the people blaming them would be the same if they were brought up under the same circumstances. If you disagree with that you're basically saying that Western people are genetically less vulnerable for propaganda/more likely to rebel against authoritarian pressure which in my book is even more troublesome.

That obviously shall not belittle the atrocities and war crimes Russian soldiers are committing. But to me that is rather a reminder of the kind of cruelty humans are capable of when exposed to intense manipulation and it makes me grateful to be born in a different part of the world.
Oh, of course it’s not a genetic predisposition, otherwise I’d be in a trench somewhere. But I don’t think that we should strip Russian people of agency either, a lot of people do bad things just because it’s easier (even though there’s a miscalculated death risk somewhere in the equation).

At this point no semi intelligent russian soldier can believe they are "liberating" Ukraine. From jewish Nazi's none the less

Yeah, I just think you can't really look down on it from a Western perspective since many who dehumanize them would probably be the same if they changed places and were subject to the same level of brainwashing and oppression. Doesn't mean Russian soldiers shouldn't be held accountable for their crimes, far from it. I hope they pay the price for the stuff they committed but I rather see the lifes of these people as tragedies.

Makes it even more impressive that there are people in Russia who view all of this as critical as you do.

I think it is more complicated than this to be honest.

Having to tolerate your wife and kids vs being cannon fodder. Real dilemma that is.

Surely they won’t know they’ll be cannonfodder.

They’re probably told they’re going on an adventure on behalf of the mighty Russia, to be heroes, remove Nazis, drink and sleep with grateful beautiful Ukrainian women, for 5x their salary.

Surprised they were so unequivocal about it - makes a nice change. My fear was NATO would do nothing if they blew up the plant but this hopefully stops Putin. It doesn't mean he won't keep blowing dams and generally destroying the country though.

Were you two right?

Just more steady progress really.

Reportedly Russia's first main defensive line breached in the south and an area of the Donbas now back in Ukraine's hands for the first time since 2014.

In case that' true , its pretty significant. Those lines have been one of the best defended positions for a long while.

Edit: shows me now as tweet unavailable, probably due to twitter settings, but its clickable and viewable on twitter.

My rough translation:

1st tweet whatsapp (or w/e it is) messages :

Guy says : feck, thought we're reinforcing, but we're told to kill Wagnerites. I didn't sign up for this.

1st tweet wall of text:

Prigozhins rant has caused a ruckus.

Channel "Dva Majora" reports, that Spetsnaz units from across the country are assembled in Rostov-on-Don. Not just VDV and special ops, but also from other parts.
Aim is to create a special reserve ( up to 1.5k). Not sure what is the purpose, however, ever since USSR break up, Spetsnaz from various groups have been used as a fire brigade, to extinguish any sort of separatism or nationalism.
Whenever there's no way out - call in the spetsnaz.

2nd tweet - Shoigu has arrived in Rostov not to fight with Ukraine, but together with Gerasimov deriving a plan to start arresting Wagner fighters. Officially, for refusing to sign the contract with MoD. It's decided to finish with Wagner once and for all.

Not sure how everyone feels about this, but I'm with MoD here. Shoigu and Gerasimov have proved themselves to be certified morons, so I want them in charge.

I feel the same way. Prigozhin often sounded quite realistic about how things are going, which makes him dangerous.

Christ almighty. There were rumours earlier that Russia had mobilised SOF to Rostov to go after Prigozhin. Could well be the beginning of the end.

Russian Telegrammers must be losing their minds right now

Prigozhi seems to do the talks only, though. Hopefully, he does the walks too this time!

How do you mean? You think they've turned Pirogin or smth else?

Staged video, faked audio, well spread messaging among russian media, just as the sun goes down. Not out of the realms of possibility.

It was Prigozhin himself however who undermined 10 years of Russian propaganda this morning. So it likely this is just the response.

The vid does look a bit staged though.

I'd expect an immediate rebuttal if that was the case.

Here we go!

I'm finding it hard to fully believe this. If it's true, it's both a moment of opportunity for Ukraine and also of peril for the world, as a internal conflict in a country with ICBMs is never something to take lightly.

He’s marching 25k to Moscow to deal with the traitors at the top and is asking others to join him but if anyone interferes they will be destroyed - it isn’t a coup though - it’s a march for justice

Obviously it's a special marching operation.
