Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

the gifs on twitter remind me of the start of 2003. but then lots of similar images from syria too i think.

If you take an airport and have air superiority I guess it's doable. Ukrainian forces aligned to defend the border probably aren't turning around to go back to Kiev and siege the airport.

Does Ukraine have no chance of at least making the airspace disputed?

There are unconfirmed reports that Ukrainian navy has been defeated in the port.

I'm not posting random tweets but it's a report coming out.

Just praying for civilians. Military based attacks by the looks of it at the least.

There is no way that all of Putin’s high ranking associates are on the same page with him. At least not privately. They can’t be in this day and age. I wish some of them would get a set of balls and off this prick with a nice Russian coup. This motherfecker has gone too far. I had to live through the shit that was the Cold War and this egomaniac is bringing it back.

It’s a mosquito navy. There’s nothing to defeat in all honesty.

I said this dozens of pages ago, but their Air Force is virtually combat ineffective. It got wrecked back in 2014 and has never recovered.
Hindsight is 20/20, but if there was one potential military commitment NATO could have made that isn't the highest in terms of footprint but maybe alters the balance of forces just enough to make Russia reconsider would have been a commitment to the air defense of Ukraine. Not any ground attack but just declaring a no fly zone.

Bah, probably makes little difference, I dunno... this sucks.

Not just the civilians…..

soldiers on both sides have families. Most of them won’t want this.

A no fly zone would be unenforceable in the event of something like what’s happening now. NATO can’t shoot down Russian planes.

It absolutely sucks, but militarily, there’s nothing to be done, short of starting a war of annihilation.

Everyone has a choice at the end of the day if they want to pick up the rifle and start shooting. No matter how hard it is. No matter how much pressure they're under.

Excuse my likely daft questions but is the fighting likely to stay in Ukraine .i.e. Ukraine fight only defensively?

He never accepted that it ended
That’s true. What’s sad now is I’ve been telling my kids for years after 9/11 that I didn’t panic or get scared living in the shadows of NYC is the simple reason that is was nothing compared to the threat posed in the Cold War in the 70s and 80s. Now they have to deal with shit. This guy has to go somehow someway.

Almost certainly yes, Ukraine doesn't have anywhere near the numbers to mount any kind of counter attack on Russia.

Yes. It's a defensive war. If there were to be attack in Russia or Belarus, it would be through saboteurs or partisans since I assume all Ukrainian special forces will be in Ukraine. I doubt the Ukrainians would be able to get to any high ranking Russian officials anytime soon to do some wet work.

Sure, but most are somewhat professional. 50% probably won’t fire. 95% will generally wrestle with his morality and fight their demons afterwards.

Can’t believe this. He thinks he can make Ukraine just cave. This is military carnage if they fight back.

Stocks all over the world is tanking, rypto tanking, etc

Gold will hit 2k today.

Only the Eastern half of Ukraine has been targeted so far.

This was is the end of UN Security Council. Permanent members it do not give a flying flick about it. It is a fecking tragedy to be living in such a world. The only way to stop this asap is to impose severe sanctions. The tougher the sooner this ends.

They could send mountains of bodies back to Russia in insurgency.

but to what end…. All the lives ruined ffs . And for what? Putin will never get the soul of Ukraine. NATO will still be able to strike whenever they like.

Sickening.

If I was Ukrainian I’d fight though…

They just sailed into the ports? That was one extreme scenario floated but discarded as a serious option years ago.

The world is dealing with a mad man dictator and should have learned lessons of the past that saying they will not get involved just makes Putin feel invincible.

The failure for other world leaders, NATO, the UN to say they will help defend Ukraine is why this madman won't stop at Ukraine.

He's power mad and that means you have to fight fire with fire. You don't negotiate with people like Putin, you get rid of them one way or another.

Saddens me that the west has become so weak over the last 30 years that China and Russia will now feel emboldened to do whatever it likes knowing the west will just watch on.
