Rugby World Cup 2015 | Reminiscing Thread

Who is?

France are inconsistent

SA have just been embarrassed by Japan.

England can beat Australia.

Only NZ look a cut above the rest, and we need another 3 teams to make that SF.

ireland, australia, new zealand, south africa and france would destroy both sides based on that.

England completely bottled that. I assume Ben Youngs was injured because he was the difference in that game for England. As we saw after he went off, he's the only Englishman capable of making the right decisions.

No problem with them going for the lineout at the end, but why the hell would they think the maul was the go to option when theirs had been pants all night?

Wales had a pick n' mix backline strung together - why wouldn't they look to get it off the top and into the hands of Watson, Brown or May? Crazy poor decision making and not for the first time from a Robshaw captained side.

What a great day. United win to put the Premier League firmly in the bag and now Wales are nailed on to win the World Cup.

 Bless.

Mistake after mistake, absolutely gutted we didn't hold on. Credit due to Wales for their resilience in this one. Getting out of the group has now been made very hard.

Ireland just lost to Eng two/three weeks ago and do very poorly in world cups.

Australia's bogey side in world cups is England.

South Africa have lost 6 of their last 10 games, and mostly deservingly so.

NZ destroy everyone

France do show up in world cups, but are not head and shoulders above either of these two.

Neither side are that bad, although no one in this tournament really stands out. Except for NZ of course.

Still can't get over it  So damn happy. Even Liverpool won today!

Based on what? Wales battling back to beat the host nation at Twickenham despite a host of injuries?

If anything our chances of progressing far into the tournament have shot right up on the basis of that performance.

And remind me again, who won the last time Wales faced Ireland?

i'd put money on that game being nothing more than a footnote to a world cup where neither side get past the quarters. no one is watching that game and fearing either side.

bless. one win and all of a sudden it's world champion time. good win for wales, it won't matter at the end of the day though.

Most of your other points are ok (although NZ haven't been as great so far as they usually are) but what happens in a preparation match shouldn't fool you into thinking it makes a difference in big games.

Both sides but particularly England made some very poor decisions in that game. If Ireland have one strength it's game management and decision making. We would have beaten both sides well today.

I reckon your boys are shitting their pants right now and I don't blame them.

No one is really standing out though..losing to Wales isnt really embarrassing either..England can get back from this..they lost 36-0 against SA in the opening game and lost Jason Robinson to injury , and they still made it to the final..beating Australia and France on the way there..you are writing them off far too quickly.

I don't think that really answers the more substantive point, though. We've had better crops of players than this fall to pieces at WCs. I suppose the difference might be having a genuinely top class coach who is less likely to panic if something goes wrong. I could see us coming unstuck against France for no other reason than it's a WC, which France have traditionally been able to find form in.

why? beat australia and get knocked out against any other of the big boys? i have nothing against wales, they deserved the win today, but that'll be their one result of the tournament, same if england manage to beat australia next week.

We will face a huge challenge in the QF against Argentina if we manage to beat France. Will be a very tricky game. They are a really good side. If we are facing NZ we have virtually no chance.

You shouldn't fear France, we are dreadful.

I watched the ENG-IRE game and both sides were quite poor, but it was a warm up...my point is that Eng have shown that they can beat the top European sides..they still have outperformed all the NH teams in world cups and are playing at home, so that will count in their favour.

Yes, they lost today. But in an Eng-IRE game, id still put money on Eng, especially a knockout tie.

world cup winning sides simply don't lose that game, it's as simple as that, a good side would be ruthless and destroy that welsh side.

Argentina are quite a tricky side too..crushed SA away from home just a month or so ago, so they are full of confidence..NZ have an unbelievable record against IRE( Zero defeats If I am correct), but in a world away from home, they seem to lose of the invincibility.

The only side who would be clear favourites to beat us are NZ. South Africa demonstrated against Japan that they don't have the cajones and I don't think Australia are all that great. With France it's anyone guess as it could go either way and as for Ireland, well it would be a tough game but I have to say that I think we would get the better of you like we did when we met in the 6 Nations.

In a match between this England side and this Ireland side in this World Cup, I'll take your bet and your money all day long. Never understand why people think what happened in a World Cup 12 years ago makes a difference to the current one. Huge number of both Ireland and Englands squads are playing in their first tournament.

Correct. 1 draw and 27 loses is our record.

This a weird world cup and I can see a side that has lost a game in the group stage winning it..You are letting disappointment cloud your judgement..this England side arent that bad..they will take this on the chin, regroup and will give Australia a hell of a game..mark my words, they will gave Aus a game..Do not write them off too soon.

before that game did you give wales a chance at winning the whole thing? i don't seem how one game against a pretty useless england side changes that. a great win for wales but nothing more.

I just think Eng are quite decent..it would be a close game..and past history does seem to affect teams for some reason..look at the SA cricket team..years of underachievement gets to you.

England will learn from this I feel. They might not win the tournament, but they will recover.

Correct. 1 draw and 27 loses is our record.
The draw should have been a win for Ireland though..so so close..but the All Blacks are beatable, the problem with a lot of sides is that they lose the match before they even set foot on the turf..play like Japan did against the Springboks, without fear..keep the scores close with 15 min to go and the AB start to panic..especially in world cups.

good sides don't fail to close that out. an england side with the likes of wilkinson, johnson, dallaglio et al win that game by 20 points with miles left in the tank.

Never been into rugby so genuine question, what makes New-Zealand so good in rugby when considering their population? I know it's their most favorite sport but are there any other notable factors?

playing for the all blacks is the pinnacle for any new zelandish boy and they have the pick of all the south sea islanders.

TOP 5 rated teams dont lose to Japan..yet it happened..the 2007 side was probably worse than this one( see their form in the years before that tournament, with even Argentina winning against them at O.T)..Yet they picked themselves up and got to the final.

You are disapointed, but Eng arent as bad as you are making them out to be. The fact that its Wales that the defeat has come against stings, but it will make sure that they dont make the same mistakes next time.

Absolutely. I always believe that Wales can win and after tonight's historic victory my belief is stronger than ever.

The game was there to be won by England, they showed themselves as the better all round team (injuries helped) but lacked teeth. After the last two injury subs they took it for granted I thought, whilst Wales were galvanised.

Delighted for Wales! They're a momentum team and this will do it for them, but the mounting injuries and lack of top quality will see them out before the business end. A semi would be a great achievement.

England should have put them to the sword though, comfortably.

i agree, we're not a bad side, being above average doesn't make you the best though and it's a long way back from that performance. it's not raising your game by 5% to win the whole thing, we'd need to be 150% better and i'm not sure that performance will come this time next week.

fair play. nothing more than heart ruling head though i'm afraid.

To caricature, it's a mix of better genes, better skills coach and better rugby culture.
