What a coward that ref is. Last minute didn't have the guts to yellow card Lawes.

They’ve explained it at least 5 times and I’m still confused. Why are Italy down to 13? And why could the ref choose number 8 as the next to go off?
I think the idea is to stop the team that has lost a player just settling for uncontested scrums by saying if they don't have anyone trained for the front row role then they lose an extra man and obviously they'd already changed their hooker so don't have 1 to bring on. It seems very unfair in this situation though, being down a man and having no one to throw is punishment enough.

Ah. Ok. Thanks.

Pleased for Lowry. I was at the Argentina game with my son and he asked me who was the tiny guy standing at one end of the line-up during the anthems. I said it was probably the mascot!

BBC

”So. If you haven't caught up with why exactly Italy are down to 13 men, here's what's what.

Italy's replacement hooker Hame Faiva was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle. Because starting hooker Gianmarco Lucchesi had already gone off injured, Italy had to bring on a front row player for a back but move to uncontested scrums.

And because they had forced (?) the uncontested scrums, the Azzurri had to lose another player - meaning number eight Toa Halafihi left the field too”.

And I thought it was only football rule makers that fecked things up.

I was at the match. It was awful.
Worst sporting atmosphere I'd say I was ever at.
Zero buzz. Just people going to the bar every 10 minutes including the fat bitch beside me who made us stand up 9 times no less during 70 mins (we left at 70) as she kept going out to the bar for feck sake. Just stay at home love for feck sake.

The reason the rules works that way is because scrums are an important phase in Union and if a team was totally dominated they could simply take frontline men off and force uncontested scrums which would even things out. It makes potential gamesmanship very painful.

This is why you get 2 pints before kick off and 2 pints at half time. Only banana skin is the potential piss break. But its only 1 game time interruption for those around you. Basic manners.

One of the pundits on Irish telly made the point that red cards used to be incredibly rare but now they’re a lot more common this rule needs a rethink. Maybe allow the ref to use his discretion about whether or not he thinks there’s been a deliberate attempt to engineer uncontested scrums (very obviously not, in this instance)

Yeah it needs a rethink with the rule changes around the tackle and head contact. Although, while I understood the logic somewhat, I'm a bit baffled as to how an injury to one player followed by another committing a red card offence could marry with a gamesmanship strategy.

If you were trying to engineer uncontested scrums this seems like the nuclear option.

Unfortunate turn of phrase in that last sentence given how the world has gone

Love watching this French team play.

That penalty is so weird, the welsh is totally lying on the french player. Now the law of the games means that it's a penalty but it's extremely silly.

I really don't understand those penalties, both french players rolled away and the ball was available before the scrumhalf arrived.
