Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

Remember those deluded Liverpool fans from the 90s? Very entitled bunch...

That's our lot now.
Agree with this.

Looks like management woke up.

Not the majority of the fans.

There is no spending out this situation.

Was done in the last 3 years, with appalling results.

Will be a very different approach.

And lots of players are not doing it for themselves for next year.

That’s why he wanted to come next summer when he could implement his system pre season and perhaps add 3-4 players to help him

It’s yet another fecking ridiculous decision by INEOS

I mean, the guy’s here now so he should be making the most of what he has - and what he wanted to do before taking on the job can’t really be explanation nor justification for 14 points out of 42 in the prem. Even if he felt he needed preseason + players to implement his style, he’s been here longer than what a pre-season period is, and has time to assess what’s available to him in terms of players.

Don't need to look far. Amorim did with Nwaneri. In our case ETH with Garnacho (or was that Ole?), Rashford under LVG, SAF multiple times, macheda for 30 mins for his famous winner for example.
Nwaneri made his debut off the bench in stoppage time during a 3-0 win. Garnacho made his debut in the 91st minute of a draw. Rashford made his debut in the Europa league against Midtjylland. Totally different games to today's. Macheda happened like 15 years ago.

I’m calm, resigned, ready for a 2-3 years long road back to being top 6 team. Feel sorry for Amorim but I think he will be sooner to winning ways than we are.

We've completely fecked this recruitment for a manager. He's nkt bad but he's also not improving the sqaud in any way whatsoever. This formation doesn't suit the PL I think. I think he should go back to Sporting, I'm sure they'd love him back and go back to being very solid under him. I don't believe he's a good fit for us. This wasn't just a few weeks. Weve completely fallen apart and it's not his fault.
Nobody is a good fit for us

Robbed a young lad the opportunity for a debut goal today.

He is really starting to concern me. I’ve not seen anything to look forward to beyond his proper handling of people not giving their all.

Hopefully we’ve not been hoodwinked again.

I get that, but it’s one thing to say it and another to see it actually happen. Look at the players we signed under Ten Hag—they all seemed like his signings to me. Now, we’re already being linked with Quenda and Gyökeres, two of Amorim’s former players, which strongly suggests they’d be his picks as well. They might be good signings, but let’s not pretend this hasn't happened previously.
I'm not pretending it hasn't happened - I'm saying it was an enormous mistake when it did happen.

I always knew results would be inconsistent, but the bare minimum I expected from Amorim was visible player improvement and better performances.

Unfortunately, we haven’t really seen either. You could argue that Amad has improved, but he barely played under Ten Hag, so it’s hard to make a fair comparison.

If I were the owners, I’d be hesitant to hand him a big transfer budget when he hasn’t yet shown convincing progress on the pitch. If a manager needs an entirely new squad before delivering noticeable improvement, that raises serious questions about their adaptability.
Very true and judging by the way they are cutting costs hard to say if they will give him a big transfer budget.

So for arguments sake let's say results and performances and league position is being ignored for the rest of the season and Amorim will be the manager come the summer

Of that's the case then there is no point allowing that unless they are willing to buy him like 8 new players because without the current lot or even just a few additions it's impossible to turn around

Yes. Look how much he is getting out of Justin Kluivert, who not long ago was probably seen as one of those players that would be passed around all over Europe without doing anything.

Amorim is out of his depth. Even the greatest managers changed their formations or systems. This was another case where City were linked with him, and we had our pants pulled down again just like Maguire, Sanchez and Fred.

Can we start hiring managers that have coached in England, Germany or Spain. The standard of the Portuguese league is low right now. Benfica are managed by someone who was out of his depth at Wolves. If Bruno Lage won the league with Benfica this season, would we hire him?

Iraola seems the best available candidate.
This season proves he's not a one season wonder. He's been successful at every club he's managed.

Changing managers isn't that expensive really compared to transfer fees etc.

Not going to happen. He will get a serious chance from a brand new season.
This current trajectory is unsustainable. Do you honestly think that if 8 defeats in 12 games becomes 15,16 or 17 loses he won’t get booted? There isn’t a club in any division in world football that would tolerate that.

Write off season. Hope the owners don’t f us with some horrible off season tour where we can’t train and focus on improving.

We should just cut our losses and go for Iraola.

I always thought he has the makings of an outstanding manager. The key with Iraola is he's getting big performances out of average players.

Lots of these managers especially in Europe are at clubs where they are conventionally big fishes in smaller ponds. Happened with ETH and is now happening in Amorim.

The transition to premier league football is a drastic change.

This is the first time I've felt a little concerned because a lot of my optimism about Amorim and how things would go was based on your descriptions of how things went with him at Sporting and the optimism you showed :o
I have to be realistic mate. It's painful watching United and I just don't see any evolution. I don't want him sacked though. I warned when he joined us middle of the season we were 3rd and we finished 4th under him and some supporters were having doubts that were squashed when we won the league the second year.

But there are problems for United though. At Sporting he had full control and he moved on from certain players and had a prolific transfer market enabling him to imprint his ideas and identity. At United he doesn't have control or money to revamp the squad. He already said in an interview to the portuguese media that next transfer market he will only get players if you sell players since there is no money. Who would want to spend money in these shite United players? He's kinda in a dead end.

A coach rigidly sticking to one formation has always been a red flag for me. In my 35 years of watching football 343/352 comes back into fashion at least once a decade, then it falls out of favour again. While the formation doesn't matter as much as some think, really a manager should be more than just one formation. Amorim will eventually realize to have a long successful career at the top of football he will have to become more adaptable.
Tell them, in my 30 years of watching football, back 3 or wingbacks only has success once in a decade.

Carefully. You will upset some on here who think our squad is worse than everyone else in the PL.

He is at a club with ambitious owners who will back him financially and he has their full support.

Why would he leave that to come to a club that have far less ambitious owners, who won't back him and take on tremendous pressure. Because of the name Manchester United?

That name used to stand for ambition and backing, without those elements I don't think our heritage makes a nailed on choice for players or managers. In fact, even more so with managers whereby you will look how badly previous manager careers have been damaged here.

Oh, and our facilities are crap.
Mate it’s Man United or Bournemouth , give your head a wobble ?

What we have is a manager who doesn't know how to play any other way than a formation that he fell on.

And instead of adjusting when needed he would rather do the equivalent of throwing shit at a wall, in terms of team selection, and at some point hope it sticks.

It's grim viewing. I back him but my god is it a tough watch. Can't wait for the season to end

Come again? That’s a pretty big stretch. Amorim isn’t pulling up trees but to be fair we did look a bit better the longer the game went on so I don’t blame him for not bringing the kids on.

Normally I would argue we just should stick with this for a while. Give Amorim time. But what Iraola is doing is similar to Klopp with Dortmund. When a coach does this in the PL we cant afford to hesitate. It is the surest thing in the PL for as long as I can remember.

But we probably will hesitate. Because someone has decided that we will start from scratch trying to build a possession side. Pep-style. Big mistake.

Dan Ashworth must be laughing his head off watching this shambles, he told the club not to appoint Amorim as he wasnt right for our team and was sacked for it.

Rashford gave up on the previous manager and the club before he was even here
This is no dig at Amorim, I think if we had got someone like anceloti in Rashford would have turned it round and wanted to be here. He just had no fight to go through it all again with a new ‘unknown’ manager with different tactics again.

Thats neither here nor there. What you're saying is the other youngsters had a free hit but so would Moorehouse or Obi just for different reasons.

Did Iraola get success straight away though, or did he have time? He's also not under the same amount of pressure of a club like United

He's needs a much better midfield because that's where the big problem is imo. Now the question is that do the INEOS team understand that or are they going to attempt to fix problems in the team that are being exacerbated by not having a functional midfield. That's a big worry for me.

The game today again highlighted our issues where our midfield just doesn't contribute anywhere near enough towards creating a cohesive playing style. The GK and backline can't pass the ball through midfield because we have players in midfield who struggle to receive on the half turn and also struggle to contain defensive transitions when space opens up. So what inevitably ended up happening was that we went long and bypassed trying to play through the central areas which makes us a very predictable team and it's a issue that's been happening for far too long. This can only be rectified by signing new players with the requisite attributes.

I'm fully behind Amorim eventhough I'm not a big fan of the formation. But when you have a weak midfield then it will create problems for any coach. So the summer transfer window will be a big one for Amorim and I hope he pushes for 4 players to come into the team. Personally I'd go for two midfielders, CB and a winger like Quenda if we have the money. I think two strong midfielders with the correct attributes in midfield would make us a lot more fluid as a team and it should see us score more goals due to having a stronger foundation centrally.

I would be looking to sack him asap. Letting him have even one kobo in the summer to spend on players would be a massive mistake.

A bit harsh but agreed. He's not shown enough to warrant further backing, that's for sure.

You don't think the context in which a teenager makes their debut matters? It absolutely wouldn't be a free hit, I'm saying that managers generally give teens their debut in low pressure games and they tend to only be on the field for a few minutes. If you have to go back 15 years to find an example of what you're asking for that just proves my point.

It is a good point. Bur he did improve bmth in his first season. Several players improved significantly after a few months. Like Solanke.

I’m biased, as I prefer his football to the slow possession style we are trying to implement.

Let’s be honest, deep down none of us were actually expecting a win against Spurs.

I’m also quite sure Amorim will fall on his own sword - this rigid adherence to a system will only pay dividends if we get the right players in, but we won’t be able to afford that due to a decade of poor financial management.

Mate it’s Man United or Bournemouth , give your head a wobble ?

Our club is a poisoned chalice at the moment, so it would be entirely understandable and unsurprising if someone like Iraola wanted to stay at Bournemouth instead of coming to us.

Did the right thing not making a sub sooner. Would have weakened us and like throwing the kids to the wolves. He brought Obi on for Casemiro with 3 minutes to go, you can’t do that any earlier without completely exposing the defence.

He needs new players, badly.

I keep harping on about it but the pressure would be far less if our players scored. A poor team that doesn't score goals cannot overperform.

I remember Ole's last season well, we were terrible, but there was quality in the squad that kept us up. In Ten Hags first season, Rashford had a purple patch.

The single biggest priority for the club has to be in attack. I would think they should get at least 2 or attackers, one young and a cheap player who has some experience.

You can't win much with shite players.

I hate when we keep coming back to this. No, these players are capable of doing better, and yes the system might be an issue. When a manager decides to put 5 defenders on the pitch it's an issue.

I dont like the fact that our 3 at the back are playing like a 5 either. We either need to commit those wingbacks to play higher up the pitch or scrap it and put the extra man in midfield, where we are outnumbered.

But there is more it it. Our forwards are completely ineffective. Hojlund cant hold the ball up and is always in the wrong place when a chance comes. Garnacho has little to no end product and still wants to run into trouble with his head down.

There was no point in bringing on Obi for 3 mins.

He should have hooked Hojlund after 60 and brought on legs for Casemiro.
