Round of 16 | Switzerland vs Italy | Germany vs Denmark

Not scared by Denmark. Half of their players play in Bundesliga, I know their value and they are not that good..

In a combined XI Germany would be present with almost all of their players:
Neuer > Schmeichel
Kimmich > Bah
Rüdiger > Andersen
Schlotterbeck > Vestergaard
Raum > Maehle
Andrich > Christiansen
Kroos < Hojbjerg
Sane > Skov Olsen
Gündogan > Delaney
Musiala > Eriksen
Havertz > Hojlund
Well played!

PS: Shouldn‘t you hve done it the other way around to not jinx it?
PPS: Hojbjerg > Kroos so that is really obvious what you‘re doing?

Nagelsmann is obviously going for width against Denmark‘s system. So Raum and Sané make sense. It‘s not like Wirtz had a great last two games.
Wirtz hasn't been great, playing both him and Musiala is a tactical concession in terms of width and Musiala deserves it more.
It makes perfect sense on paper. But if Sane is having a stinker no one can claim to be surprised by it either, so as always hindsight will dictate whether this decision is called smart or idiotic.

Well played!

It's a conversation starter.

Explain France

That's true - however France's teams are heavily influenced by a large quantity of the whole continent of Africa settling in at France and playing their nationality as French. They have algerians, Ivory Coast, Nigerian players etc

Its happening in England too. Saka, Mainoo, Eze, Guehi etc

http://www.englandfootballonline.com/TeamBlack/PlyrsBlckMtchUsage/PlyrsBlack.html

There is many more players in the national team with potentially african heritage than ever before in terms of quantity but maybe not the quality.

England has a lot of multinational people living together in the country usually moving in to England in the 1980's - so I'm actually expecting an asian player maybe through the area of India, Pakistan etc to pop up soon too.

In the next 20 years i wouldn't be surprised to see players from all across great britian, African background & asian backgrounds such as chinese or indian players play for England in a multicultural national team. Having that big variety of players from different continents playing for England would be very beneficial. Even someone like Rice who is irish has made a big difference to the England team so you can see how having alot of diverse nationalities in your squad can be very beneficial both in quantity and quality.

You have to wonder if the quality of the international player is directly influenced by the quality of the league.

Spain won the league when it was predominantly Barcelona and Real Madrid's rise from Guardiola's influence on Barcelona and La Liga. Players like Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, Puyol, Pique all coached in a system alongside Xabi Alonso, Ramos etc

Then there's alot of hype around the England squad pre-tournament & i have wondered whilst this may not be better than Englands golden generation, they do have much more technically capable players than ever before because of the rise of the PL's quality of gameplay.

Italy was a next level beast when Serie A was the best league in the world & whilst they do win tournaments like last euros - the quality of their team has been going down in line with the quality of the Serie A.

It's definitely connected.

Ever since Germany became a boring 1 club league, the NT declined in quality. Their last WC win was achieved by a generation of players that played in the league when Dortmund and Schalke were regularly challenging for the title, and half of their team were current/former Dortmund and Schalke players.

Right now they're having a slight resurgence due to Leverkusen, and key Leverkusen players add some new value to the team.

@giorno think of it this way. 1/4 of Switzerland is Italian. It’ll be like a second team to follow
Feck those cnuts. Vamos España!!!
Most of that team was terrible but he had the Juventus backline he managed before. The 4 were impenetrable, they conceded one goal that tournament.
But the rest of the team was truly terrible. Seriously, overall it had significantly less talent than this one
Oh dear, I forgot how average you were at the time. The Euro 2020 win was a bit of a fluke wasn't it?
In hindsight yeah, but that's mostly mismanagement, poor timing and luck. The 2021 side was genuinely great and it wasn't playing above its level. It was merely the only time we got our players to translate their club form to the NT and be a team
Different squad no?
Worse squad

Different squad no?
@giorno
Much better defensively than this, but way worse in attack… he had 5 top players in his defensive set up, 3 of them WC winners (Buffon, Barzagli & De Rossi) and the other 2 were Bonucci & Chiellini… the rest of the squad was almost serie B level (Pelle, Eder, Giacherini…), and for whatever reason they didn’t have Verratti or Jorginho (both of them already good players) in that squad.

But Conte’s success was also the failure of his opponents. Belgium and Spain had far better squads, but they didn’t look to be coached at all… Weltmeister Germany also should have defeated them before the shootout.

Disgraceful treatment of Tyldesley from ITV - especially given the individuals they have put in front of him. Nonsense

after the switzerland game earlier, is any one that interested in watching the shit side of draw?

Kroos needs several good nights of sleep.

Thomas Muller really gives his all during the national anthem.

Say what you like about the Germans. But they know how to national anthem.

Denmark to lose 3-0. Although we're generally a bit better against teams who don't just sit deep and wait.

It seems a bit wrong to have an English ref in charge of a Germany match in the knockout rounds of a major tournament.

Rate Tyldesley as a commentator. Him retiring means we must all now suffer the insufferable Peter Drury more often.
